Lithium

While Berlin-based, Beijing-born musician and composer, Lithium comes from a classical music background, she has since been introduced to the electronic music world. Her creations focus primarily on harmonic and melodic composition for electroacoustic arrangements. For Signals Festival 2021, Lithium presents a solo piano-based performance, focusing on letting the discordant notes interact with multiple samples.

Doron Sadja 01 HOMEPAGE - Doron Sadja

Doron Sadja is an artist, instrument designer, and educator whose work explores modes of perception and the experience of sound, light and space. Last year he wowed us with his performance "If You Dare, Come a Little Closer", that used a high intensity laser to draw out the frequencies of composition. This year Doron is taking over Catalyst's expansive hallway with ‘Losing Site of Time’, a site-specific sound and light installation that explores the speed of sound. We can't wait!

It was a special privilege to host GSBTB Open Music Lab for their important conversation on building an inclusive music scene. Full transcript is now available in the link below.
Thank you for joining us, Ben Osborn, Bloomfeld, Vio PRG and Sarah Farina!

Earlier this year there was a suggestion from within our community that we should offer a space to talk about equality, diversity and inclusivity. We put together a co-creation group drawn from our diverse community of up-and-coming artists, as well as more experienced mentors from the industry. The discussions of that group set the agenda for a public dialogue with Bloomfeld Vio PRG Sarah Farina Ben Osborn, which took place at Signals Festival Catalyst Music - ultimately aiming to lead to new initiatives and concrete proposals for change.

We can’t do our usual work right now - so part of the reason we’re doing this is that we want to know what OML can do to foster solidarity and make music more inclusive. This is the first step - the beginning of the conversation, definitely not the end. We are looking for ways to keep this going.

The event was streamed by Signals Festival at the time, but in the spirit of inclusion, we are today sharing a transcript of the inspiring dialogue that took place. Please find the transcript here: https://sites.google.com/gsbtb.org/signals-transcript/home

The most from the least: looping, sound creation, modules, and more with Václav - CDM Create Digital Music

On your lockdown Friday night, tune in to Toyota Vangelis' (Bastl Instruments) fantastic workshop 'beyond looping'. Perfect if you missed it at Signals, or if you'd like to recap.
Thanks to Peter Kirn & CDM for sharing also!

With beautiful sounds to dream away this autumn, tutorials in both fundamental techniques and "cheap tricks," our dear friend Václav Peloušek from Bastl Instruments is here with inspiration for your music-making adventures.

Signals Dialogue /// Building an inclusive music scene

Signals Dialogue /// Building an inclusive music scene with Sarah Farina, Bloomfeld, Vio PRG and the GSBTB Open Music Lab

/// About
This panel event at Signals will be a little bit different. While it still takes the form of an open dialogue, our panellists will be responding directly to an agenda put forward by a special co-creation group. Drawn partly from Open Music Lab’s diverse community of up-and-coming artists and students from Catalyst, as well as more experienced mentors from the industry, the co-creation group will meet prior in a safe, non-public environment to establish the topics for discussion. The ultimate aim of this dialogue is to lead to a new initiative, with a concrete proposal for change.

Signals Dialogue /// How social bias is infiltrating new media

Signals Dialogue /// How social bias is infiltrating new media and storytelling technology with Hermione Mitford Flynn (Mimic Productions), Paulina Greta (SUROGAAT) and qinyuan.lei. Moderated by Jon-Carlos Evans (Catalyst Film & Acting).

/// About
As the stories we tell both shape and reflect the world we live in, how important is it that we ensure the tools we use don’t take on our own bias? From new technology that is designed to create on its own and stories written by algorithms, to the seemingly harmless filters we choose to enhance our creations. Where can all this lead, can the technology evolve to be better than us, or is it inherent that it will further our biases? And who’s responsible - the storytellers, the developers or the consumers?

Signals Dialogue /// Where is the pandemic taking the music industry? with Lucy Atkinson (Earth Music Agency Ltd), Mareena, Kristoffer Cornils. Moderated by Andrea Goetzke (Music Pool Berlin)

/// About
If the lockdown was a catalyst exposing the flaws of an industry reliant on live events to support itself, what does the resulting change look like? From understanding social vs economic sustainability through to deconstructing the current structures both limiting or supporting different aspects of the industry. What are some real solutions to (re)build a sustainable, supportive and independent music industry?

Signals Dialogue /// Impact of design in music making

Signals Dialogue /// Impact of design in music making with Lillia Betz (Ableton), Khyam Allami (Amplify Berlin) and Robin Koek. Moderated by Benjamin Bacon (Catalyst Music)

/// About
Programs like Max/Msp and Pure Data have always been popular in the music tech research community, but now we’re starting to see these programming/design tools become integral parts of the music production process. With Max4Live for instance, instruments, plugins, interfaces and mapping can be completely redesigned and reworked by the producer to suit their music/workflow. This offers amazing opportunities, but can be daunting for beginners to navigate. This dialogue on the impact of design in music making aims to critically discuss the opportunities, risks and future perspectives of design in music production.

Signals Festival

Our annual Signals Festival is a non-profit, educational event showcasing the diverse talent of Catalyst, Institute for Creative Arts and Technology (formerly dBs Berlin). Through a series of live performances, installations, screenings and educational content each year we’re addressing a theme relevant to film and music making in our shared communities.

The event was born six years ago out of a need to give our performance students a realistic, live environment to really push their learning and assessment experience. Over the years it evolved to incorporate more students’ productions such as installations and film screenings as well as opening out to a wider audience beyond the students’ peers. While there are no longer assessments, the heart of the festival remains about education and community.

Signals Festival is not just about showcasing our creators, it’s also very much about building relationships and learning opportunities with our external communities, peers, fans, colleagues and friends. We’re constantly in awe and proud of the talent, grit, kindness and diversity of our community - we’re looking forward to you joining us!
