Another one of today's screenings is "Memory Box" by Joana Hadjithomas and Khalil Joreige. The film was the focal point of one of our Talents Talks back in March, 'Non-Scripted: Can We Write Cinema?', where Lebanese director Joana Hadjithomas and the film's cinematographer Josée Deshaies were joined by script editor Franz Rodenkirchen in discussion about the delicate balancing act between what's written and what's really seen in cinema, illustrated with excerpts from the film.

Taming the Garden | Berlinale Meets... Salomé Jashi | February 2021

✨ Berlinale Summer Special - Talents Alumni Highlight! ✨

“Berlinale Talents' Doc Station was my first Berlinale experience. The workshop and the inspiring talks of some of the professionals I admired formed a turning point in my understanding of the film world. I was developing my first long documentary at that time. I remember the excitement of sharing my project with strangers who were supportive or sceptical of my ideas. It feels great to return to the festival after several years with my film “Taming the Garden” programmed in Forum, the section I had valued so much.” Salomé Jashi (BT 2009)

"Taming the Garden" follows the uprooting of great old trees in Salomé's native Georgia by a wealthy tree collecter. The absurdity of the removal is juxtaposed by the obvious power play, man's need to conquer and control nature. The film screens tonight at Open Air Kino Haus der Kulturen der Welt .

North By Current | Berlinale Meets... Angelo Madsen Minax | February 2021

✨ Berlinale Summer Special - Talents Alumni Highlight! ✨

Attention! There are still tickets available for Thursday's screening of "North By Current" by Angelo Madsen Minax (BT 2016) at Freiluftkino Kreuzberg!
The film was developed at Talents Doc Station back in 2016 and follows the director's own journey as the unexplained death of his niece leads him back to his family. It is a personal essay that spans a broad arc, negotiating the topics of depression, domestic violence, motherhood and transgender masculinity in what turns out to be cathartic family therapy, gently healing the upheaval caused by the filmmaker's transition.

“The Talents program was where the film began. I showed up with the skeleton of an idea - nothing shot, no footage to show for it, and with only my story to reference. I had no idea how I would translate my life experiences into a narrative, filmic form. By the time I left the Doc Station I knew exactly what kind of film I wanted to make, down to imagining certain scenes. It was a tremendous incubator at such a vital early stage in conceptualizing the project. And I couldn't have asked for a better home for the film's world premiere than the Panorama program at Berlinale.” Angelo Madsen Minax
