Family Art Journaling: LIVE Online workshop this Saturday!

The Power of CONNECTION for families with kids ages 6+ 🌞✨...that age when school starts in Germany, where independence is growing, can be a challenging time to feel still part of each others worlds. And that’s aside from living together during a global pandemic. One way to be present and regularly ‘check in’ with one another, is to start a creative routine together. From around 15 minutes everyday or very regularly sitting together, sharing tips and ideas, playing games with pens, paint, writing, doodling, splashing ink about, can help calm anxious minds, and help you feel more integrated as a family unit with one another. It can help express thoughts, dreams, experiences, memories and worries in a creative constructive way. Being together with journals around a table, but also having a sense of personal space, vital for these pandemic times. Playful approaches to art journaling support us to stay rooted, recording everyday magic & celebrating imperfections and curiosities. Do you journal as a family? How do you approach it? On Saturday, I will be running a LIVE Family Art Journaling small group workshop sharing techniques, prompts and ideas to build creative journaling into your family routine. Here’s what one participant to the in person variation of our workshop said,“ Loved the opportunity to explore, create and be open to what comes. Excited to take away inspiration for more journaling. To be more open to MESS and let go of perfection.” Scroll to see other lovely feedback. The Last few spots are available for Saturday’s workshop online - see more info in the comments and to book! Let’s start a creative ritual together and strengthen parent & child bonds! ✨🌱🌞#creativefamily #artconnectsus #artjournaling

Gathering little treasures✨When I was a teenager I was a girl guide, and we had a challenge to go and collect as many things as we could in the park next door, inside a matchbox. It was a Friday night, out in our uniform, and there were other teenagers hanging out drinking, laughing at us picking up tiny objects from the grass, paths and flowerbeds. That was the last scout meeting I ever went to. Feeling out of place, and all the feels of peer acceptance. I loved the activity however, tiny objects arrange in a box and carried around, tucked away. And years later, I rediscovered it, during my masters programme in live art. I started making performative experiences 1-2-1 with participants, inside makeshift photographic darkrooms in gallery stock rooms, theatre basements and old warehouses. I took out my little matchbox and shared the tiny treasures and my story, and asked people what they carried around in their pockets, and we made photograms together using these, in the moment, the act of photography. Intimate exchanges with a stranger. I learnt a lot in that project about people’s ordinary objects with extraordinary stories- lucky conkers so they always got that job or other important event, keys to ex-girlfriends apartments they still had and didn’t want to surrender, train tickets that had taken them to a funeral….I’m still a little box lover, and often taken them on family holidays, trips out to the park, I like how they make me notice the details in a new place. My daughter and I take one box each and compare and imagine the stories behind that lost button or bit of torn paper. We will be exploring treasure hunts in our upcoming Art Play at Home course that starts on Monday through our Creative Spark prompts. How we can begin in the park and then explore further with giving new life to our magical little treasures with art and play materials at home. Love you to join in 🥰🌟See Link in comments #mindfulart #familyartcourse

Let’s talk about CONNECTION, how do we deeply connect with the kids in our lives? How can we switch off from and disconnect from our new lives lived a lot through devices, and switch on to reconnect with each other in analogue and meaningful ways? How can we communicate without words, especially with young children? One wonderful way we find of use in our Art Play programme is about mirroring your child. Using our hands not only to create, but also to communicate, suggest, share. Here was a beautiful moment in a recent class between a parent and their 3 year old, the child suddenly noticing their hands looking like the butterfly wings he’d painted, and the parent playing along bringing it to their own body and awareness too. Magic! Being your child’s playmate, showing that they inspire you to take action and play along. About letting your child lead the way, to grow self-esteem and show them that you value their way of seeing the world. When we reframe and approach art play through that lens, more can be possible. We feel more present, less worried about outcomes, and can relax into the journey. Paint can easily be washed off hands later, the joy of this moment of connection is only here and now. In the new Art Play at Home course we work together to help you find your own magical moments, and work out the stuff around letting go of directing activities, and setting boundaries for mess. Join our growing community of international parents to share the journey! Link in comments, booking closes Friday 1st, starts Monday 4th 🌱✨ #letthembelittle #beyourchildsplaymate

Why, hello there lovelies 👋Thought it might be an opportunity to re-introduce myself, Harriet, as a scarf-loving blend of many things - Founder of little art, Artist- Parent-Educator-Coach, now that I’m leaping out from the calm oasis of my intimate Berlin studio into wild unknown online creative play world. LEAP AND THE NET WILL APPEAR, wrote Julia Cameron in her legendary book to recover your creativity, The Artist’s Way. LEAP was actually my word of the year, which seems like a lifetime ago when I wrote it in January, and filled a mood board with empowering magazine cut-outs with big lofty ideas of sprouting 2020 shaped roots into fun new museum projects, art coaching & wellbeing retreats. And I was kinda imagining leaping not so much into an internet shaped net but more like a joyful creative art & coaching juicy one. Growing heart felt and transformational art-ness in person, in new ways. There had been a great resistance in me at first with working in the digital zone, feeling like my work is, by its relaxing, handmade nature, intentionally immersing us in the HERE and NOW, away from screens, disconnecting from devices and reconnecting with each other and ourselves. That somehow creative self-care & wellbeing through art, achieving flow states to de-stress and unwind, always needed to be an in real life experience. By slowly peeking out into the new normal life emerging around me, March 16th I nervously started to take my Art Journaling Programme that we were half way through, online to Zoom, and quickly it surprised me and the participants. One wrote "The online version of the class has given a new dimension to my creative journey. Going to a studio full of different kinds of materials is very inspiring and motivating. But the next level is to feel that you can be creative anytime within your home, only with a few crayons and watercolours. Harriett has given me many tips to use objects around me as tools or prompts, that I had never really paid attention to before…” Just WOWZER. The motivation to spread creativity into our lives across the planet, this moment of ‘Creativity is your New Normal,’ in ways I could never imagine 🌍
