Too soon for a #ThrowbackThursday? Of course not!

A big #Festival19 shout out to the amazing AMANDLA delegation who brought such a wonderful team to France. You are five amazing young women and a credit to #SouthAfrica. Thank you for the memories☝️👏🇿🇦

"Equality is everyone’s game!” That’s why we were so excited to be a part of streetfootballworld´s Festival 19 last week under the same motto. Together with our staff leaders Elizabeth and Yanga, three participants from Safe-Hub Diepsloot and CTC Ten Safe-Hub Khayelitsha traveled to the festival in Lyon, France. The five young women took part in various workshops, football matches and cultural activities to learn more about women’s participation in football and break barriers across the world. Elizabeth’s conclusion: "If we all come together, we can help each other promote equality and achieve our goals, because we are the future generation!" ✊💪⚽

For all those still feeling the full effects of Festival 19 fever, we still have stories from the wonderful people who were with us in France.

Eight months ago, Arare (15) arrived from Ethiopia at the Emergency Housing Centre for Migrants of Ivry-sur-Seine on the outskirts of Paris. Persecuted by the ruling government because of her Oromo ethnicity she was forced to leave her home country together with her family. Two months later she was joined by Meher (19), escaping years of damage caused by the war in Afghanistan. At Festival 19, they shared the role of Fútbol Más France in their new lives in Europe. Breaking records and making the world a smaller place…It was quite a day for the young leaders at #Festival19.

In the morning, they were part of the team of 807 players, playing over 69 hours, supporting Equal Playing Field in their world record attempt for the largest number of players to play continuously in a five-a-side match.

And that was only before lunch...
There was still more than enough time for a leadership session jointly led by Football United & Fundación Tiempo de Juego, focusing on communication and advocacy during which young women from opposite sides of the world found commonalities between their work and some of the challenges they faced in their daily work using #football4good.

Our Story

After a number of years demonstrating the power of Football for Good against the backdrop of male sporting events, this year’s Festival 19 marks the first time that we, as a football for good community, will celebrate within the context of a FIFA Women’s World Cup.

In Lyon, France, Festival 19 will bring together disadvantaged young people from across the globe to champion football’s unique power in advancing our push towards achieving a gender equality and the empowerment of all women and girls.

Once again we are partnering up with local organisation Sport Dans la Ville for ten-days of cross-cultural exchange within, empowering girls to take leadership roles in their communities and raise awareness for the need of an equal game for an equal world.
