Episode 2: Life in Corona Times (or Uncertainty)

Our Wicked Podcast ensemble gathered last weekend for a special Coronavirus Zoom roundtable. With uncertainty as our sub-theme, we wrestled with important aspects of this stark new reality. Join us by listening and commenting with your own musings.

Episode 1: The Body (Part I)

Friends, Berliners, World Citizens!

We are pleased to announce the inaugural episode of The Wicked Podcast—a community “anti podcast” focused on deconstructing broad topics to evoke imaginative insights. Our themes will coincide with the Wicked Poetry Slam, and this one hits particularly close-to-the-bone: The Body. Join our roundtable for the first half of a two-part discussion, and feel free to add your own contributions via SoundCloud or FB.

And if you want to support our project, all donations are welcome via PayPal:

The human body is a demanding, complicated thing often objectified under the weight of consumerism. It comprises our brain, which shadows our understanding of the body, urging us to be productive. We

Words from Wicked

We hope that these words find you well during these difficult time. Please continue to take all the necessary precautions and maintain physical distancing as much as possible.

Given all that is happening, instead of cancelling our shows. we have decided to move online. Art is both a place of community and comfort, invaluable commodities these days, and so we find that it is crucial that we continue with our monthly show. The format of the show will change slightly but will maintain the Wicked atmosphere that we have cultivated over the past 3 years.

As always, the proceeds of the night will be divided between the artists, organizers and other Wicked Projects. Now, more than ever, it is vital that we support such creative projects as they are the life that energizes and reinforces community during difficult times.

Details about the online slams can be found on the individual event pages. Please click attending so that we get an idea of how many people to expect.

A couple of months ago, Wicked projects took part in an international poetry slam, - Trans Europe Expression. - with heats in Berlin, Paris and Manchester. Last week I was able to witness Berlin's heat winners - Demi Anter, Arielle Kathryn and Paula E - compete in the final in Manchester, and I am proud to say that all three were amazing! A special congratulations to Paula who won the slam!

I hope to be able to do this again next year. Thank you to Common Word Manchester and also Paris Spoken Word.

Videos of the performances will be uploaded by the end of next week. Thank you to Jonathan Ferryman for the photography.

Congratulations to Paula Ethans, the winner of the first Trans Europe Expression!

Orange dream - Listen To The Lyre

Wicked Projects is thrilled to welcome Listen to the Lyre to the stage. This amazing group will be performing a musical set at the beginning of the evening.

Listen to the Lyre is what you get when a folk, classical and jazz singer combine into one harmonised voice. Singing a mixture of traditional folk melodies and original compositions, this is a band for daydreaming to.

Here, have a listen:

The lyrics for this song were inspired by a dream. Listen to the Lyre is Jele Mensen, Leander Jones, and Julie Nemer. Melody, lyrics, guitar written by Jele ...

Soar (Soaring-Words.com)

It has been a great wish of mine to bring my soul and the theme of Love on a politically conscientious scene, on a socially engaging platform and under a multi-cultural, multi-gender and multi-race umbrella.
My wish came true last night, when I experienced one of the best events on Berlin's artistic scene and I can't believe that I and SoulDiary were an active part of it. Everything went like I hoped for from the first light (actually a candle:) to the last clap.
It would be remiss of me not to stop, go back and say a huge thank you to everyone who supported me, making this one wish palpable in a greater way that I've honestly hoped for.

So thank you to the amazing line-up of slammers who brought fresh perspectives to a theme I never want it to fall into clichés and platitudes.
To the smooth Dj who indulged us in incredible tunes from Sam Cooke (Berlin, you really need to learn this name!) to funk and soul, RnB and everything that delights the ears with authentic, quality music (with actual lyrics, instead of some boom-boom!!).
To the venue which is one sweet jewel in the middle of a creative and organic district, hosting our words, songs, laughter and dance with care professionalism (and some great shots, too, I was told:).
To the three judges who had the hardest task of the evening in grading outstanding quality.
To the incredible musician who left the audience stunned, allowing only the air to gently waft above us.
To the best comedian that Berlin has to offer setting the mood, the tone and the good laughs through the entire night.
To my two knights featured alongside me for creating together what I call "a patchwork of intertwining scraps of soul", accompanying my sensitivity, challenging and uplifting the best version of me.
And finally to everyone who shared a positive word, a gesture of appreciation, a smile, a good thought, making this a memorable reality.

I was humbled and honoured to bring my vision of Love to Berlin last night. Thank you all for this! Till the next,

Meet the artists:

Olivia is a British Jamaican female poet. Raised in the UK, spending time in South East Asia, now settling in Berlin, her work is shaped by what she experiences on her travels.

Inspired by Def Poetry Jam and hip hop, Olivia has been writing music and poems for the last 10 years. Having studied English Literature and completed her LAMDA examinations at a young age, she is articulate, distinctive and playful with her speech.

Her performance style and heuristic disposition are purely gripping in an original way. Her work fluctuates between rap, spoken word and song, this movement represents the transitional stages of her life. Audiences identify with the budding poet as death, birth, current events and personal stories are prominent in her catalogue of work.

Olivia's drive and passion have seen her emerge as a freelance writer, poet and Music executive. Writer for Canada based music magazine, Bolting Bits and Creative Director of music label Ele Records, she has been able to combine her love of music with her love of language and poetry. The issues she covers are close to the hearts of many. Her words are often about politics, the afterlife, love, Motherhood and everything in between.

The Wicked Team is thrilled to announce that Cedric Till will be playing musical set prior to the slam. Cedric is a talented, soulful and dynamic performer and we can't wait to see him take over the stage.

If there is one thing that multi-ethnic Berlin-born HipHop artist Cedric Till doesn't abide, it's being pigeonholed. When he is not working on another addition to an already extensive catalog (11 projects since 2010), he dabbles in storytelling, mixes poetry with soliloquys, and occasionally delivers short, dark and absurdist comedic rants. His honesty, pointedness and raw intensity engage and stun audiences as much as his sonic, stylistic and thematic versatility.

Dear comrades in rhyme, We are hosting a performance act with music and open stage poetry this Friday at 8pm, as a way of paying homage to Mahmoud Darwish, surrealist writer. Its also an event to draw attention to the dreadful conditions refugees face today at the borders of Europe - as Darwish`s own work has been concerned with the experience of exile and statelessness. Would love to see you there and hear your work. Pm if you are interested in joining! https://www.facebook.com/events/466550944229001/
Attention all Wicked fans!
