BOOK LAUNCH: Moments of Rupture: Space, Militancy & Film (2021) by Sandra Schäfer

Films and spaces have the capacity to intervene in the nexus of power, violence, and liberation. Sandra Schäfer’s book examines the methods of militant cinema within the decolonisation and liberation struggles of the 1960s and 1970s. The author analyses contemporary film and the media produced during the radicalisation of the student movement
in West Germany.

Using her own cinematic work as a foundation, Schäfer focuses on two “projects” undertaken by Hezbollah in Lebanon: the Resistance Museum in the south of the country and the reconstruction of Beirut’s Haret Hreik district after it was bombed by the Israeli military in 2006. How does Hezbollah use space and architecture to shift power relations? How do these relations influence memory and identity? In the process of her investigation, Schäfer examines different geopolitical contexts as well as her own position as an artist. Sandra Schäfer presents her book in conversation with architect Joseph Rustom from Beirut.

Clips from her video installations “Mleeta” and “Constructed Futures: Haret Hreik” will be shown.

Covid-Wise: The event will take place outside in our lovely hof. Please have a negative test or complete vaccination for the event. Kindly wear a mask when inside the bookshop. The bar will be open!

Weekly Notes on Book Design with Studio @jetzt_immer part XLVII: Copy, right? (2016) Concept and design by Antonia Henschel, text by Markus Frenzl.
Published by Trademark Publishing.

Antonia Henschel is a German graphic designer who creates conceptual, often award winning books. For the anniversary of the BACKENZAHN™ (German for molar tooth) stool by the furniture company e15, she created this homage to the stout little object. Henschel frames the premise of her book as a question: A two word sentence (and wordplay) that calls attention to notions of original and copy, rendition and authenticity.

The BACKENZAHN™ is one of e15’s most iconic designs. Each leg is carved from the center of a tree, which gives a lot of variation in patterns, making every stool unique. In the book, no images of the actual stools are shown, per se - only photo copies (reproductions) of photographs (reproductions) of the individual (unique) specimen.

The screen print on the cover is rough, like it was also produced on a copying machine. The book is set with a textbook version of Helvetica, functional and neutral, but with an added naiveté with its one-story a, straight t and stemless u. By justifying the paragraphs throughout (even when that creates holes between the words) Henschel makes the text blocks relate to the shape of the stool: straight edges on the outside, with space instead distributed within.

The placement and composition of the images is repetitive, but in this repetition we are made to notice the more subtle variations of texture and light as rendered via the grainy photocopies. Through this rough presentation, the iconic design is somehow made abstract - made into platonic copies of copies of the pure BACKENZAHN™ idea.

Something more traditional or polished would probably not have befitted this stool. “The BACKENZAHN™ is not a light, graceful piece of furniture,” Frenzl writes, “... it asserts itself with its materiality, the cracks in the wood, defiantly, next to more elegant furniture, polished surfaces, fine fabrics or materials that are free from defects. … It’s a piece of naturalness and authenticity that exposes all chichi to ridicule.”

We recommend the video-essay, 'A CITY IN DAILY LOVES: An Affective Geography of Postmigrant Berlin' by Dr. Omar Kasmani featuring Bani Abidi, Iskander Abdalla, and Sylvia Schedelbauer - Link in bio!

"This video-essay approaches ideas of postmigrant feeling and be/longing in Berlin. Fragments of texts and conversations – unfinished, intimate and ongoing at best – lead us to a felt geography that accrues by way of migrant rhythms, refrains and relations. A City in Daily Loves is an intimate scenography of Berlin, one that is neither fixed nor entirely external to the self. Here, Berlin is a material yet porous ground of affect, a city located along the interface of inward and external modes, felt only subjectively and piecemeal."

Book release/reading/meeting ◽️Stage of Recovery (2021) by Georgia Sagri

Tonight at 18:00!

Via the publisher, @dividedpublishingltd:
“For us, Georgia Sagri shows what an artist can be today, putting aside the roles, preconditions and expectations. It's hard to water down her thinking. She has a trust and faith in the possibility of life transforming, and so ‘Stage of Recovery’ is a book to train yourself to die! In her practice, Sagri educates herself to be in the situation of no control and non-knowing. Because this is our situation. From ‘Stage of Recovery’: ‘The skill here is not about how you represent something or how you mimic something, but how you’re able to abandon the precondition of the moment itself.’”

We are delighted to be able to contribute our space to the exhibition! ‬ ▪️Rafael Domenech’s Notations from Somewhere. Opening ‪Today from 12:00 - 22:00. The exhibition will run ‪until November 13, 2021‬.

“The oblique recipient (a conversation to nowhere) started a year ago. Today, we are binding the archive that resulted from it. We are unbinding, over-printing, and rebinding published poetry books to place back in circulation. There is no monetary gain, if you happen to visit Berlin ask for a free book at Hopscotch reading room.”
◽️
Via @hua_international - “For this exhibition the Cuban-born, NY-based artist has created two parallel projects around Potsdamer Straße that highlight his distinctive approach to exhibition-making.
◽️
In “Notations from Somewhere,” the exhibition takes the form of an experimental publication that constructs and deconstructs the complex book-architecture-city interrelations.
◽️
For Domenech, exhibition-making is much like publishing: the editorial decisions aim to develop a sequence of moments that create a context for an aesthetic experience. The works in the exhibition integrate the convulsive dynamism of the city and thus heighten our awareness of architecture and the urban landscape outside of the gallery space.”

We are glad to present for the first time printed copies of the print and digital publication The Endotic Reader N.2: Maintenance! Domestics as Institutional Becomings. Titled after our last year’s public program at The Institute for Endotic Research, TERN.2 opens doors and windows to the myriad ideas that underpin it.

With TERN.2, we turn to the domestic sphere, which today has become an especially important site of production. In recent years we have seen the domestic sphere, often in relation to care, work as a model for institutions, which also always depend on reproductive labor. Indeed the domestic model has many problematic aspects, such as exploitation and nonrecognition of labor and rights. It is perhaps in the tension between its conflicts and possibilities where the power of the domestic lies. The domestic is also where possible paths for the reorganization of institutions can be uncovered.

Berlin! Tune in next Wednesday Oct 9th for my 12:30pm INTERVIEW by Vincent Neumann for Tonart Deutschlandfunk Kultur ahead of the Oct 10th Hopscotch Reading Room book launch. Tonart Lounge Tonart Americana - aka Country Tonart Weltmusik BerlinWriters KCRW Berlin Exberliner https://www.deutschlandfunkkultur.de/ Anna-Bianca Krause
Hi! I am currently working on an artwork which will appear in a public place in Berlin soon, this September, in collaboration with the nGbK. The work will feature the question "On what is peace based", translated in many languages. And I am still looking for translations... So far, these languages are included: Arabic, Persian, Urdu, Hindu, Hebrew, Armenian, Turkish, Greek, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Dutch, Polish, Hungarian, Serbian, Russian, Vietnamese, Mandarin, Korean, Danish, Finnish, English and German. So there are still plenty missing, for instance Swahili, Amharic, Yoruba, Oromo, Hausa, Igbo, Zulu, Japanese, Swedish, Latvian, Rumanian, Kurdish ... and so many more. If you know one of those and want to contribute to this work and have that sentence in your language included in a temporary artwork soon to be seen in public space in Berlin, let me know, write to me, show me how it is written, which font to use, and if possible, not necessarily for the work, but for my curiosity, how it sounds. Let me know! Join in! Thank you! All best, Stephanie ps an image of the work will follow up, sent out to all contributors and those interested — fair enough if you want to see what you will contribute to — as soon as the details about the location are cleared.
The final performance from last night.
jumps and hugs from bahia.
