ANCB The Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory is a unique cultural and educational platform in the contemporary urban and architectural discourse. Building upon three decades of expertise in the communication of architecture culture - through exhibiting and publishing internationally acclaimed and pioneering architects and urban planners - Aedes established, in 2009, an additional urban research and workshop platform entitled ANCB The Aedes Metropolitan Laboratory. Recognising the inseparable interplay between the critical challenges facing cities and the physical environment, cultural behaviours and ongoing advances in technologies and materials, ANCB generates the interdisciplinary and cross-sector collaborations necessary to offer innovative insights, positions and visions.

Episode #49 Rebuild by Design. Resilient Planning Through Collaborative Design, 6 December 2014
https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=14821113&podcast=1#.XsPwscbgqhc
In October 2012, millions of people across the Northeast United States felt the force of Hurricane Sandy. As a response, in the spring of 2013 President Obama’s Hurricane Sandy Rebuilding Task Force, led by the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), initiated Rebuild by Design - a competition that would promote resilience through innovative planning and design - which was overseen by Henk Ovink. Rebuild by Design led ten international, interdisciplinary teams through months of intensive research and collaboration with neighbourhood stakeholders throughout the Sandy-affected region.

https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=16273193&podcast=1#.XrvYq8bgqhc
The second of two events focussing on the interdependencies between urban space, society and international politics in times of crisis. The discussion concentrated on specific ways of political articulation, particularly regarding the visualisation of urban spaces during civil resistance incidents and protests. After all, protest movements in everyday urban spaces are directly visualised through photographs, video clips and artwork (protest logos, street art etc.), usually produced by the demonstrators. The digital sharing of these visuals on social media ‘virtualises’ and instantly ‘internationalises’ these spaces.

https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=15971045&podcast=1#.XrqZYJrgqhc
The first of two events focussing on the interdependencies between urban space, society and international politics in times of crisis. Civil resistance and protest movements on everyday urban spaces increasingly raise global attention and are in the process of becoming icons of international politics. They reveal new forms of political articulation that underscore the intertwining of everyday and international politics. Qhat are the implications that result for local urban planning and urban design?

https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=16305685&podcast=1#.XrKR_prgqhc
China is challenged by rapid urbanisation. There is a high demand for affordable housing, for additional forms of food production, for the reduction of long commuting distances – simply for a compact city organised in clusters of high functionality and with resilient impact. How to reach an inclusive model that uses synergies and produces a dense network of interaction? How to integrate a city-wide strategy with bottom-up initiatives on a local scale? What are the realities and obstacles of the people living in so-called Urban Villages? Are there new strategies in discussion for a hybrid new habitat?

Episode #38 Mobilising the Periphery - #3 Focus Africa: Informality and Urban Pattern, 1 & 2 July 2016
https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=16818942&podcast=1#.XrKDa5rgqhc
Africa is urbanising at the fastest rate worldwide. Rural-to-urban migration, continued high population growth and the reclassification of vast amounts of land as urban are resulting in slum-like urban conditions; critically so in Sub-Saharan African cities where the provision of basic utilities and services cannot keep pace with population growth. This symposium focused on informality and its associated urban patterns, as manifest in the urban peripheries of Sub-Saharan Africa, examining exemplary responses from urban practice and research, across the spectrum from policy to on-the-ground project.
With Schindler and Eduard Kögel, Remy Sietchiping, Astrid Ley, Olalekan Jeyifous, Bouwer Serfontein, Aisha Walcott-Bryant, Jan van den Broeck, Manuel Herz, Fabienne Hoelzel, Chelina Odbert, Verena von Beckerath, John Paul Muwanguzi Senyonyi, Anza Magazine

Episode #37 Museum Revisited, 8. Juli 2016
https://www.ancb.de/sixcms/detail.php?id=16835176&podcast=1#.XrFk5prgqhc
