Maya Shenfeld

The first event from Schinkel Pavillion's Disappearing Berlin series was touchingly beautiful! A big thank you to Maya Shenfeld and all the other musicians who made this performance of Julius Eastman’s Gay Guerrilla possible and to everyone who joined us for the sunset concert on the 22nd floor of the Postbank Tower!

Last Saturday I had the honour of leading a performance of Julius Eastman’s Gay Guerrilla (arranged for guitar by Dustin Hurt) by an ensemble of 16 female-identifying guitarists and bass players at the opening event of the Schinkel Pavillon's new event series Disappearing Berlin.

I was delighted to have an essay by Laura Preston accompany this project and event:

“What may be happening in this work, what may soon occur tonight is an example of how music can be organized differently: the usual hierarchical order and stricture to complete an orchestral sound is no longer basis, but something else. […] Here, stands sixteen women gay guerrillas. If Eastman’s composition was to cast light on inequality and discrimination, that basis, if it was a call for a cause to be uncompromising, that purpose, then artist Maya Shenfeld has taken up this provocation: she has gathered an ensemble of women on electric guitar and bass— she is Carrie Brownstein and Corin Tucker, she is Elizabeth Cotten, she is Gail Ann Dorsey, she is Peggy Lady Bo Jones, she is Carole Kaye, she is Kim Gordon, she is Meshell Ndegeocello, she is Esperanza Spalding, she is Tina Weymouth, she is “who knew,” coming to fill the stage. And as much as this is a reenactment or could be said to be part of the fervor of a market-incentive revival of Eastman, there is something else going on. Something that, I think, Eastman would have appreciated. A community is being strengthened and there is a queering occurring. Tonight’s Gay Guerrilla uncomfortably shows just how unusual it is to see so many women in this position, and it is part of overcoming the debasing of women instrumentalists and, all the more so, women composers. […] Indeed, music needs a body, a political base (or many basses) for spiritual communion. The basicness of the ground that Eastman called on and made art for is translated here tonight by women, seriously electric.” (Excerpt from Laura Preston’s text, May 2019)

Thank you Schinkel Pavillon for the support and making this project possible. Thank you Laura for contributing these beautiful and inspiring words.

OPEN CALL
For an upcoming performance of Julius Eastman’s “Gay Guerrilla”(1979), Schinkel Pavillion is looking for 16 musicians – 14 electric guitar players and 2 bass guitar players – of female and trans* identity. The concert featuring several performances of the sound piece is produced in collaboration with composer and sound artist Maya Shenfeld, evolved in response to a recent performance of the piece in Berlin in which Shenfeld happened to be the only female performer in an ensemble of 16 musicians. We are very excited about gathering a new ensemble and inviting more diverse voices to participate this time around!

The concert on May 18th 2019 will be preceded by a workshop 4-5 weeks prior to the performance. Rehearsals take place May 16th-18th, 2019.

If you are interested in participating, please send an email to

[email protected]

A fee is offered for the participation.

Odwalla1221

Odwalla1221 is Chloe Maratta and Flannery Silva, a musical duo formed in 2013 in Baltimore, MD. After spending two years playing shows throughout the country and recording three albums, the two moved to Los Angeles in 2015 where they continue to play live shows and tour the U.S. and abroad. Their discography includes: Future Butterfly in 2014 on D.A. Spunt Company (No Age’s Dean Spunt’s label), Lily 23 in 2014 on VR, Earth Flirt in 2015 on Ooga Booga, Fawns Are Dirty / Purr Hi in 2016 on Thunderzone w/ a B-Side remix by Lil Ugly Mane, and most recently, Twiggy in 2017 on Some Ware and CONCRETE / DOUBTFUL REALM, a split 7” with Angels in America on Big Love Records.

Odwalla1221’s sound is built from a shared language library of samples, looping vocals, and electronic drums. Part collage band, Odwalla pieces together amorphous textures, feedback loops, obscure samples and dissonance to create a raw and guttural energy in the music. At the heart of the duo is Chloe & Flannery’s friendship, which translates through the duo to create intimate and charged lyrics to their songs - or, if you look at them another way, poems to the music. Together, Odwalla1221 is part Grace and part Rage.

Elysia Crampton

Elysia Crampton’s eclectic and unrestrained electronic music is the flashpoint of a myriad influences opening upon the complexity and multifacetedness of Aymara becoming. Underscored by radical and queer politics, Crampton’s experimental work gives sonorous form to contemporary expressions of Aymara resistance and survival: a project of “becoming-with,” in the shades given this term by Donna Haraway via prison abolitionist Che Gossett.

Her album Demon City, composed in honour of the revolutionary Bartolina Sisa and her yungueña grandmother, was deemed a “masterwork” by Rolling Stone and was one of Pitchfork’s 20 best experimental albums of 2016. Her latest release, Spots y Escupitajo, leads the listener into “a dizzying, hyper-conceptual collection of miniatures.”

„Der Mond hat miese Laune. Pfeife im Mundwinkel, Zipfelmütze auf dem Kopf hängt er am Himmel und ergießt sich in Selbstmitleid. So viel erwartet er doch gar nicht vom Leben, nicht das große Glück, nur ein Brot mit Edamer und einen Kaffee auf dem Balkon.“
