Zum Tod von Dr. Lonnie Smith - Ein Meister an der Hammond-Orgel

Dr. Lonnie Smith passed away last month at the age of 79. Throughout his career and late into his life, Smith used jazz to celebrate love, the good in the world, and the coming together of people. His performance at Jazzfest Berlin 2017 was an unforgettable moment. On Deutschlandfunk Kultur Matthias Wegner speaks of his encounter with the master of the Hammond organ four years ago.

Jazzfest Berlin 2021: Scenes of Now - The programme is online announcing 40 projects!

After a digital New York-Berlin edition, this year’s festival traces the paths of improvised music to three more cultural hubs: Cairo, São Paulo and Johannesburg. Together with local partners, the festival team has developed a diverse programme of partly pre-produced and live concert formats that showcase the musicality and innovative power of the respective creative music scenes.

In addition to that as part of the live programme in Berlin, 22 acts by musicians from Europe and from the New York and Berlin avant-garde can be experienced at Silent Green, the Pierre Boulez Saal and the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church. Almost all festival productions will be recorded by ARD and Deutschlandradio and partly broadcast live. On ARTE Concert and Berliner Festspiele on Demand the festival will again be available free of charge in a live stream and then later in full on demand.

George Wein obituary

With the support of George Wein, the “Berliner Jazztage” were founded in 1964 by Joachim-Ernst Berendt and Ralf Schulte-Bahrenberg, which later became today's Jazzfest Berlin. Now the music promoter and co-founder of the Newport Jazz and Folk Festivals has sadly passed away at the age of 95. Looking forward to the discursive format of Jazzwoche Berlin. Among other things, important questions about the perspectives of Berlin jazz scene post-COVID will be discussed. A programme update follows soon 👇

Jazzfest Berlin 2020: 5 to 8 November

Jazzfest Berlin, curated by Nadin Deventer from 2018 on, was founded in 1964 as Berliner Jazztage, making it one of Europe’s longest-standing and most renowned jazz festivals. While the first two decades of the festival’s existence focused on the style-defining and popular jazz greats from the United States, the spectrum has since then been extended to include global developments, with an emphasis on contemporary jazz from Europe. The festival endeavours to give a platform to emerging artists and to communicate the enduring vitality of jazz.
