Happy news for all the festival fans out there: The Berlinale - Berlin International Film Festival 2021 Summer Special will take place from June 9 to 20 in selected open air cinemas all over Berlin. Ticket sales will start on May 27 and will surely be sold out quickly, so don't miss out! 📽️🌟

The sun is definitely on our side these days - the Berlinale Summer Special 2021 as an outdoor event is officially set. From June 9 to 20, the Berlinale will give audiences the enjoyment of an open-air cinema experience at 16 venues in total, from a specially created outdoor cinema at the historic Museum Island Berlin down to local "Kiez-Kinos". The Summer Special is geared towards re-igniting the desire to go to the cinema, and to contributing to the revival of cultural activities with an audience. The Berlin International Film Festival is now working at full speed to implement the outdoor festival concept.

The programme will be available as of May 20 and ticket sales will start on May 27. The awards ceremony will take place on June 13 following the decisions of the official juries already made in March. Other previously postponed prizes, such as the Berlinale Documentary Award, the GWFF Best First Feature Award and the Crystal Bears in the Kplus and 14plus competitions will also be awarded. Of course, hygiene and security plans have been developed and will be coordinated in close dialogue with the venues.

Read the full press release, including the list of the 16 cinema locations, here: bit.ly/SummerSpecial2021.

"Throughout Europe, art-house distributors face a difficult impasse: Even if they wanted to recoup sunk costs by selling to VOD, it’s difficult to create value around smaller titles without a well-publicized theatrical release. -If you don’t release the movie theatrically,- added González Kuhn, -nobody knows [about it].-"

Cinemas Died Often, Yet They’re Still Alive !

"We want to return to a theater where there is no “pause” button. We want to see, on a big screen, a film we know nothing about, sitting next to someone we don’t know, and experience the promise that cinema has always upheld, and which will never disappear." says Thierry Fremaux in a guest column for Variety, on the eve of the 125th anniversary of the first commercial movie screening.
