International Masterclasses Berlin

International Masterclasses Berlin Integrity, Reliability and Professionallity IMB is the leading organization worldwide for International Masterclasses for Orchestral Conductors.

International Masterclasses Berlin is a group of motivated and exciting professional musicians, led by condcutor Gil Raveh, who gathered to make a change and suggest a different way for music studying, teaching and performing in the orchestral conducting field. Our team consists of very experienced musicians, from all the musical performing, production, managing and teaching fields. Based in Berlin, Germany, ”the creative capital of Europe”, we cooperate with some of the most important institutes and facilities and providing the highest level of learning atmosphere possible. In our philosophy, we see the participant in the center of our courses.to whom we offer a unique overall “suit”, which sews all the aspects of courses from a such into a one unified idea – the musical performance. Therefore, we always have an open to the public final concert in the end of the course. For us, the final concert is the culmination of a whole week of intensive studying, rehearsing, practicing and discussing. We believe that each one of the active participants in our courses MUST have the opportunity to participate in a real concert, in order to be able to express, what they gained during the week. In order to maintain high teaching standards and to make the course as rewarding as it can be, we always limit the number of participation to 10 active participants. In some cases to 12 but never more. This to guarantee longer and more focused time with the teacher and the orchestra, and above all taking decent part in the final concert. Our long years experience in organizing different musical event, from opera productions to a large scale international masterclasses gives us a vast perspective about how these courses should be organized and executed, logistically and artistically. We see the participants experience at the top of our priorities and we are trying to make thier participation, as well as their stay in Berlin as productive and rewarding as we possibly can. We hope to to see you in one of our next courses. You are welcome to apply on our website, or contact us for more details. The IMB team

Browsing through some conductors’ biographies... It looks like Bernstein, Chelibidache, Ferrara and other prominent conductors, even from our current days, have had a long list of “students”, that continuously “name dropping” their teacher’s names on every occasion.

Symphony No. 40 in G Minor, K. 550: I. Molto allegro

What a great conductor!
Carl Schuricht!
Expect the unexpected with this live performance. To imagine that you could actually sit in a concert hall and witness this kind of performance with such quality and innovation is quite unbelievable in comparison to the concert experience in our days. (Pre-Covid-19). The current Covid-19 situation is probably beyond repair. Listen to the whole symphony for a complete and very “roller coaster” like experience. Carl Schuricht is a name to remember.

Haydn: Symphony in F minor, H.I No.49 -"La passione" - 4. Finale (Presto)

Check out this great authentic performance of the 4th movement of Haydn 49th. Taken from the times when DG were also into music. Anyway, this 1950’s recordings box of Haydn symphonies with Scherchen is strongly recommended to get your curiosity running. All with a definitive warm orchestral sound and electrifying playing. Enjoy and take it easy!

HAYDN: Symphony No. 88 in G major / Krauss·Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks

We are sorry if we were a bit to heavy yesterday. From now on, only uplifting, but still very special. What can be more uplifting than Haydn 88? It’s enough to listen to the introduction alone in order to get an idea about this unique performance. Try it! 😉Clemens Krauss and Bayrische Rundfunk. Classical simplicity with strong personality and distinctive sound...this is what we like. Enjoy and take care!🙂

Charles Munch: Ravel Daphnis et Chloé Suite No. 2 (ONF, 1966)

I wanted to post two videos of this great orchestral piece, you know, to compare. This one, and another one, by a very “successful“, not so young anymore, South American baton waver, currently working in the USA. But then... I figured out, there’s nothing to compare... here we see the crème de la crème of real conducting. Enjoy!

With all the insanity going on, and the very intense masterclass we had last week, we have forgotten to mention the birthday of one of our most appreciated and loved musician/conductor in history, Hans Knappertsbusch (12.03.1888)! Kna is from an era when conducting was considered high art, which demanded a bit more than an Instagram account, a crooked agent, and a weasel PR agency.

We know that it could be difficult to imagine that there were quite good conductors born before 1990, but believe us, there were quite a few impressive ones.

Happy Birthday!

St Lukaskirche der Berliner Stadtmission

We tried to push it until the end, but unfortunately, today we were forced to break the masterclass before its last day.
We are happy that we could do it until today from Monday, and that most of the class took place. It was a fascinating week with Maestro Julien Salemkour, a great group of conductors and two dedicated soloists!
We still hope that we will be able to do our BEETHOVEN MMXX Masterclass in the end of April.
STAY HEALTHY EVERYBODY!
Take care,

"Conductors are the most ignorant people in the musical field … after press!”

Just before bedtime... We all know this classic interview with Chelibidache, where he states clearly, that none of his students (6000 pupils he says) were up to deepen their musical knowledge the way he thinks a conductor should, and that conductors in general are ignorants, and that he never saw one that isn’t.
Q: “Are you fatalistic?”
A: “No, realistic I am.”

.

I would keep it on a low profile if I was one of his 6000 “students.” There are better names to drop, if you are a name dropper.
Sleep well everybody 💤

The smell of conducting competitions...
Conductors can now join a masterclass organized by the same organization and led by the jury members...
it “might” raise your chances to win.
There’s a word for it... 🧐
(Of course you’ll need to pay the application and participation fees...)

A recommended reading for the weekend!
Have a good one :)

An anonymous conductor has published his / her reckoning with the classical music business in a fascinating longread. I never came across a piece like that from an insider, such a candid, ruthless, and courageous disclosure of misdevelopments during the last decades. It is not actually a lament but, as the subtitle more aptly claims, an analysis of the decline of a whole industry which, in my opinion, everybody concerned with the future of professional music practice and education should care about. I don't agree with every aspect—in particular, ›greatness‹ does not qualify as an appropriate touchstone, just as little as the questionable concept of a ›masterpiece‹—, but in its essence, this critique is of overwhelming relevance and plausibility. The author has persuasively stated why he / she cannot disclose his / her identity (please also read the interview: www.bit.ly/2wOol5T), but I for my part fully acknowledge the article's position and will readily advocate its conclusions. The business is rotten to the core, and some things will have to change significantly.
