Global North – Global South: Narrative Sovereignty

Moderated by Nadia Denton and featuring the insights of esteemed professionals from across the spectrum of the film industry - Tamara Falicov, Tiny Mungwe, Tessa Boerman, Tamara Dawit, Lamia Belkaied Guiga and Abhishek Nilamber - these discussions and debates over 2 episodes will identify the mechanisms that underpin Global North-South dynamics in the film industry, looking in particular at distribution, financing and festival engagement. Both episodes will examine the extent of the imposition of a Western gaze on the Global South, how far this leads to content which is either stereotypical or which fails to challenge the actions of the Global North and which solutions can be implemented to fundamentally reimagine and radically transform the current status quo.

The first episode in the 2-part series is out now and the second episode will be released on May 7th.

Call for Entries: 18th Abuja International Film Festival The 18th Abuja International Film Festival was established in 2004 in order to fill a gap in the Nigerian Film Festival circuit which was non existent then, but over the years that noble intention has metamorphosed into a global film festival and the longest running in Anglophone west Africa which has clearly shown that it was about much more than filling a gap but creating a platform for the industry. The international breakthrough came rapidly on the 3rd festival in 2006 when films were screened from 45 countries. One of its main goals is to develop, present and explore the cultural identity of the nollywood audiovisual sector helping it to give more experts to the market. The film festival aims to give ground to young filmmakers who want are looking platforms to express their creative expertise. The number of entries in features, shots, documentaries, animations and experimental category is gradually increasing, in 2020 amidst the COVID19 pandemic, the film festival had 1062 films with over 100 slected by the pre-jury of which 70 can make it to the competition. Beside the competition and info campaign AIFF features a host of festival screenings, selections from film Schools, film markets, film-, and all-art workshops in the program.
