The first event of the series will be “Du Bist Kino” cinema days which will involve screenings of a diverse selection of films focusing this year on turkish origin directors. In recent years, many artists, gastronomes and academics from all over the world have Berlin on their radar and some even started to call it their home. "Du BIST Fest" events offer those living in Berlin or creating with Berlin in mind a platform for creative dialogue: both with each other and with other creative communities in Berlin. In this sense, Du BİST fest seeks to build a dynamic and creative bridge between Berlin and rest of the world. We asked ourselves: what might be the best way to break down the walls of stereotype and prejudice that stand on both sides of this bridge? We believe fostering the creative exchange of ideas and artistic modes of expression, face to face, is a great way to move beyond our preconceived ideas about each other and to meet each other on our own terms, as our unique creative selves. That is our goal. The first event of the series will be “Du BİST Kino” cinema days: This will involve screenings of a diverse selection of over 20 films. These are long films, short films, and documentaries from directors based in Germany and Turkey. screenings are scheduled for December 1-2, 2017 at Babylon Berlin. “Du Bist Fest” is a series of event in Berlin organized by Madrabaz(Berlin) and Faprika(Istanbul).

KOCA DÜNYA Fragman

"Turkish filmmaker Reha Erdem's latest is a thick Freudian soup of sibling love and parental denial, set mainly in the isolation of swampy woodland. Saturated in rich color and laced with beguiling images of nature as a source of beauty, mystery and menace, Big Big World evokes classic fairy tales with its story of an orphaned brother and sister..."
(David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter)

"Reha Erdem is one of the most distinctive directors working today: no one else’s films look quite like his (thanks in part to his symbiotic partnership with DP Florent Herry), nor are anyone else’s movies populated with the kinds of people inhabiting his universe. Erdem conjures characters in broad strokes, exploring the feral nature that lies embedded inside children and young adults who’ve not yet learned how to encase themselves in the norms of “civilized behavior....”

Remake, Remix, Rip-Off

FUN FACTS:

- Turkey in the 1960s and 70s was one of the biggest producers of film in the world
- From the 1950s through to the 1990s, Turkey had no copyright laws
- There were literally a handfull of screenwriters/directors to churn out some 300 movies a year
- Turkish cinema had no money to make the big budget films so popular in the West.
- In order to keep up with the demand, they were copying scripts and remaking movies from all over the world.
- There are Turkish versions of Tarzan, Dracula, The Wizard of Oz, The Exorcist, Rambo, Superman, Star Wars or Star Trek and whatnot.

Did we spark your interest?
In that case, don't miss this fun journey with various directors, producers, actors and screenwriters of that era, telling us the story of this pop-culture phenomenon.

After the screening there will be an Q&A with the director Cem Kaya.

My Father's WIngs

"Many will compare Sezer’s cinema to that of Yılmaz Güney, the acclaimed late filmmaker who won the Palme d’Or in 1982 Cannes Film Festival with his “Yol” (The Road), as well as English director Ken Loach. Both filmmakers take on the problems of the working class, both depict stories of the underdog. Sezer might very well be third on this list."

Clair Obscur (TIFF Official Selection)

Two women, one oppressed by sexist traditions and one liberated by modern mores, have more in common than it would seem.

Clair Obscur by Yeşim Ustaoğlu
Turkish with German subtitles
Turkey/France/Germany/Poland, 2016

"Clair Obscur explores a range of abuse; mental, emotional, physical and self-inflicted, and also possibilities and limitations for women in the face of such abuse. Film imagery mirrors the emotions...The acting is wonderful, especially considering the heavy demands in portraying Elmas.
The director capably allows the audience to feel what is going on, and not just see....".

INCLUDING Q&A with the director and the crew after the screening.

But wait, what the heck does "AYOL" mean?

Turkish wiktionary says: "An informal interjection, a filler word, most commonly used by woman".

I researched a little on the internet and some dude in a word reference forum says:
"It doesn't mean anything, I call these words "bitchy-talk", they don't have any meaning. :p
It's used by women, or effeminate males."

And this other guy responds to that with:
"Yeah right, and also some homophobic people use this to tease men who talk in an effeminate way.
Ps. And yes sir, it is really annoying."

The message is now clear, right? Even the name of this colorful documentary is a stroke of genius and shows how LGBTI+ community in Turkey deals with the sturdiness of homophobia and transphobia: With HUMOUR, SARCASM and as well as SELF-IRONY! Resist! ResistAYOL!

#Resistayol accompanies trans activist Sevval Kilic during the 21st Istanbul LGBTI Pride caught up in the reflexions of carnivalesque Gezi Park Uprising. It is a turbulent audiovisual journey witnessing a wind of hope, humour, and solidarity wished to be remembered in the politics of Turkey today.
