Troyes, two hours from Paris, has one of the few town halls with the original slogan of the French Revolution and a statue of Minerva crushing a hydra of opposition, the third version produced under the Restoration of the monarchy. Another statue of an idealized make n**e represents Energy Cut Down by War. Troyes, a sub-prefecture is filled with surprises waiting to be discovered.

The Anglo-Chinese park in the 19th arrondissement of Paris, offers a respite during this period of confinement. Open in 1867 by Napoleon III for the workers of Paris, it was built over a pitted gypsum mine. Today, it has become a haven for bobos who can no longer afford to live in central Paris. On a surprisingly incorrect note the Park is covered with signs citing a 150-year-old anniversary, an allusion to the bloody events of the Paris Commune which took place in 1871. A handful of photos reproducing the events of the Commune decorate one side of the gates around the park. Ignored by most they pay a modest tribute to the martyrs of this bloody revolution which lasted 3 months.

A post-lunch bike ride led to some unexpected discoveries: a girl posing like a flower beneath a pink dogwood in bloom on a dingy plaza; the only extant restored metro by Art Nouveau architect Hector Guimard; an imposing archway framing a garden of topiary on Avenue Foch; a 1970s architectural monstrosity on Avenue Foch; a sign that tells me that the avenue opened in 1855 under the Second Empire to join Paris to the Bois de Boulogne and was landscaped by Alphand who also redesigned the Bois de Boulogne in two years with two artificial lakes, an artificial cascade with rocks and plenty of picturesque landscapes. Two years! Inconceivable today! @boisdeboulogneparis @bois_de_bologne_99999999999 @avenuefochparis @hectorguimard @hectorguimardarchitect @hectorguimard7905 #city #cities #architecture #landscape #avenue #avenuefoch @balade_haussmannienne @appartementhaussmannien

It’s pricey but tempting for the prosperous bobo chic of Paris. Located by the Place du Marche St Honoré named after the patron saint of pastry makers, it is the alternative to Hediard and Fauchon. Food snobs are welcome but buyers beware. Today a display of vegetables that rivals the windows of Cartier sells. At least they are real!

The Marais district never ceases to surprise. Even with so much that is closed, there is still much to see from the sublime to the ridiculous, the tragic and the ordinary. Strolling around the city without a preconceived point of view leaves you open to notice a familiar quarter in fresh ways. Paris will always be New even as it remains very old.

Even during a pandemic like Covid-19 the French always find a way to enjoy a beautifully set table and a choice of delectable takeout options. The pastry is from Stohrer the oldest bakery in Paris, ditto for the assorted pate en croute. Up the street is an Italian specialty store that offers one of the best antipasti assortment in Paris. Another gourmet emporium features a very thing from chocolate to pate. Their takeaway sandwiches are pricey but exceptional. A great way to enjoy the first balmy day in February 2021.

Under Napoleon lll, an exquisite private theater was built and recently restored by a wealthy patron from the UAE. In September I was lucky enough to get a private tour with my friend Marie-Ange and boy were we impressed. It was only used for 10 performances in its entire life as a working theater however. Today it’s a museum piece never to be used again

The view looking up from my terrace table at the Mini Palais this week. The stunning mosaics were restored some years ago when they redid the roof as well. Now the building is closing in December for massive renovations for the next four years. It is by far the biggest meeting space in Paris and has been used for multiple events ranging from car shows to indoor food shows and even an ice skating rink. I was there this week for the opening of Art Paris, one of the most intriguing art shows of the season. @le_grand_palais @minipalais @artparisartfair #art #artfairs #architecture #architecturephotography #mosaic #mosaicart

Even a traffic jam on the Rue de Rivoli cannot d’être me from gazing at the beauty of the Saint James Tower at dusk with its glowing stained glass windows calling out to us like a lighthouse beacon in the night.
