Last night, in cooperation with Jeune Chambre de Commerce Franco-Finlandaise, we organized an Arctic Afterwork with glaciologist Olav Orheim. Olav is one of the world’s leading experts on the Arctic and the Antarctic, and the theme for last night’s discussion was: Arctic Exploration - A Race for Resources? The presentation focused on the challenges presented both by climate change and by commercial interests in the region. Thank you to everyone who came, and especially to Olav for taking the time to talk to us 🇳🇴🇫🇷🇫🇮

Hi Rolf! How did you end up in Paris, and what are you doing here?
- Hi! I currently work in a French hedge fund called CIAM, where I did an internship as part of my studies. Before that, I was a student at Sciences Po Paris, where I did a Masters in Economics and Business studies.

What does a normal work day look like for you?
- It can vary, but I usually arrive at the office around 08:30 before the market opens to catch up on important news and events. My job is to find and analyze European companies to invest in, so the rest of my day is usually spent talking to sell-side analysts, reading macro and company specific reports, crunching the numbers together to derive the fair value of a company, and then present my findings to the team. I usually finish sometime between 18:30 and 19:00.

What would you say are the biggest differences in working culture between Norway and France?
- That is a good question I wish I could answer, but I've never actually worked in Norway. Once I return back home I'll know...

What is your favorite thing to do in Paris when you're not working?
- I'm a big fan of expositions and museums, which means there is never a boring day in Paris! I also like to read and go for runs in some of the parks here.

Hi Allison! How did you end up in France?
- I came to France in 2004 as a Norwegian litterature student hoping to learn French (so that I could read Madame Bovary in its original language). As a typical Norwegian, I fell in love with Paris and decided to continue my life here. The years went by, and I went from litterature to marketing and management, and here I am 14 years later and still can't believe how fast the years have gone by....

What does a normal working day look like for you?
- I'm a marketing consultant and I currently work for the French 'La Poste', so my days are filled up with meetings, brainstorming, and more meetings. Luckily I don't have too long working hours, as a mum I'm allowed to leave early (18:00 / 6pm) to go and pick up my girl at school.

What would you say are the biggest professional differences (e.g. in working culture) between Norway and France?
- I believe management is very different in the two countries. In France we have a very hierarchical working environment whereas in Norway it's more of a flat structure (more efficient if you ask me...). Working hours are longer in France, but might be more adapted for people who like to take their time in the morning, as a normal working day can start up to two hours later than in Norway. Again, it's a question of efficiency: I believe Norwegians have a higher working moral and get more things done in shorter time, less coffee-breaks, shorter lunch-breaks, so they get to go home earlier...

You are also organizing the Norwegian Christmas Market in Paris this weekend. How did you get involved with this project?
- The Norwegian Christmas market started as an idea when I was on maternity leave in 2015 and felt like I needed to occupy my days with something more intellectual. I contacted my friend Laila Thortveit and we decided to create a nonprofit orgnization to get this up and going. We both love Christmas and Norwegian Christmas traditions. So we wanted to show French people a little piece of this very special Norwegian Christmas spirit. A year later, the first edition of 'Un Noël en Norvége' was born.

A small Norwegian Christmas market had already been organized in Meudon a few years earlier, and we got our inspiration from this - but wanted to make it even bigger. The idea of creating an indoor high-quality market in the heart of Paris was born. We select good quality products, foods and arts&crafts, and invite the producers to come and expose their products. We bake as much as we can of the traditional Norwegian Christmas cakes and serve traditional glögg. Every year it has gotten bigger, and this year we'll have three whole floors in the locations of Elephant Paname. Laila is a professional soprano singer, so she will also do a Christmas concert in the afternoon. We hope to see as many as possible come and enjoy the event with us!

What are you doing in France, and how did you end up here?
- I work as an Offshore Shipbroker for Barry Rogliano Salles, one of the oldest and largest shipbrokering firms in the world. I ended up there by a string of random events but my main introduction to the firm was through a friend and now colleague in our Geneva Office.

What would you say are the main differences between working in France compared to in Norway?
- Longer lunches, longer days and a more traditional working environment.

To what extent has the French language been an obstacle for you?
- Due to the fact that Shipping and Offshore are both very international, and that I work in English all day - not so much. The challenges have always been outside of the office. But with time you manage to get by in most situations. I do urge people considering a move down here to get started on language classes as soon as they can.

And finally, do you have any insider tips for other aspiring young professionals who want to work in France?
- I can highly recommend working here, I have learned a lot in my three years and have a lot more I will pick up with the time to come. However, be prepared for a lot of time going into purely practical matters, getting your 'carte vitale' and social security number, taxes and other organizational matters that relate to your personal life will take time so that's one thing to just get to as soon as you can!
