On this day, 10 November 2009 the UN General Assembly declared 18 July as Nelson Mandela International Day. Nelson Mandela was awarded with Fair Play Trophy for Career in 1995. In his youth Nelson Mandela practised boxing, cross-country and football. In his autobiographical book “Long Walk to Freedom”, he stressed that sport taught him some very precious lessons. Under the previous racist regime, Nelson Mandela has spent 28 years in prison under very harsh conditions, but when he became President of his country, the first black to be elected to this office, his first political action at a public meeting, was to kiss Frederik De Klerk, representative of the previous racist regime, to proclaim a reconci- liation and to appoint the former Head of State as his substitute of the new State freed from apartheid. This is undoubtedly an extraordinary action of fair play, in the deepest meaning of the word, and was recognised as such all over the world. Nelson Mandela embodies an extraordinary example of application in public life of the fair play principles, that form a basis not only for sport, but also for all other social activities, that thus acquire human value. Edwin Moses celebrates his birthday on 31 August. He was an emblematic figure of the 400-metre hurdles who completely dominated his event for decades. Despite being inexperienced, he won his first international competition, the Olympic Games, in Montreal in 1976. He remained undefeated for nine years, nine months and nine days and won 122 consecutive races including 107 finals and another Olympic gold medal in 1984. At the age of thirty-three, Moses finished in third place at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul. During his incredible career, he broke the World Record four times. Since his retirement from competition, he has served the Olympic Movement and has relentlessly fought against doping. He is a real role model of fair play. Happy birthday!
