The 2020/21 Premier League fixture list has been released, with the season kicking off on September 12th. As with the end of the 2019/20 season however, the first few rounds will be played behind closed doors.

From our perspective, we’re continuing to talk to the football clubs, who themselves are in communication with the Premier League to make plans for when people can safely return to our stadia. All the season’s fixtures are now on our website (www.vipfootballhospitality.com), and although we can’t definitively say what packages we will be able to provide you with, if you want to get in touch with us and register an interest in any specific games we will get in touch with you when things are clearer.

The likelihood is that our stock will be limited in the short term, but rest assured we will do our best to meet your requirements, and provide you with a fantastic day out.

Keep an eye on our social channels for all the updates - @circuitv1p on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

If it's your birthday today, have a great day amidst all this chaos and uncertainty. You share it with a few familiar names from football past and present. First up is Dave Beasant, 61 today, a goalkeeper whose career had many clubs, and even more ups and downs. Beasant’s claim to fame is that he was the first person to save a penalty in an FA Cup Final.

Sky Sports pundit, and Soccer Saturday stalwart Paul Merson is 52 today. Merse had a distinguished career, including long stints at Arsenal and Aston Villa, as well as representing England in the 1998 World Cup.

Former Manchester United winger Jesper Olsen is 59 today. Jesper was one of the first foreign footballers to play in the English game, and racked up over 100 appearances for United in the 1980s, as well as being part of the exciting Denmark team that reached the last 16 of the 1986 World Cup, alongside Michael Laudrup, Jan Molby and his United teammate John Sivebaek.

Once the most expensive player transferred between two English clubs, Fernando Torres turns 36 today. The best years of his career came at his beloved Atletico Madrid, and during a three-and-a-half year spell at Liverpool before a controversial £50m move to Chelsea, which was ultimately disappointing in spite of the fact he won the Champions League with the Blues. In a glittering career Torres also won over 100 caps for Spain, and was part of the squad that won the World Cup and European Championships.

Finally Manchester United defender Marcus Rojo, who is currently on loan in his native Argentina, turns 30 today. A World Cup finalist in 2014, he has never managed to establish himself at United, and it remains to be seen if he’ll return to Old Trafford at the end of this season.

To all our valued customers:

As you are more than likely aware the Premier League has now been suspended until at least 30th April because of the coronavirus. If you have purchased a match before this date, it has now been postponed.

Your booking with Circuit will remain valid for the re-arranged match once a decision has been made, and when we have this confirmation we will be in touch.

The Premier League has today reiterated its commitment to finding a way to complete the 2019/20 season, and with the postponement of Euro 2020 it has opened up a window for domestic leagues to be completed by the end of June.

We do apologise, but these are unprecedented times and we hope you can understand and remain patient.

Once we have more news we will continue to update you. In the meantime, we hope you are all well and staying safe at this difficult time.

Kind Regards

The Circuit Team

A number of former footballers are celebrating their birthdays today - so, many happy returns to former West Brom, Aston Villa, Manchester United and Sheffield Wednesday boss Big Ron Atkinson, who turns 81 today; ex Newcastle and Wolves midfielder Temuri Ketsbaia, who is 52; and footballer-turned-pundit Danny Murphy who is 43 today!

It was a moment that shook the English football, and the wider sporting world. How was it possible that a fit 23-year-old athlete could collapse with a cardiac arrest during an FA Cup match?

Eight years ago today, 43 minutes into an FA Cup clash between Tottenham and Bolton at White Hart Lane, opposition midfielder Fabrice Muamba collapsed, with nobody around him. His counterpart Rafael van der Vaart was the first to notice, and hurriedly waved the medical team on from the touchline.

The ESPN television coverage showed Muamba face down on the turf, apparently resisting as the physio tried to roll him over, and it didn’t take long for the players, coaching staff and supporters inside White Hart Lane to realise that this was something outside the ordinary. As the travelling fans chanted Muamba’s name, others were pictured biting their nails, and Bolton boss Owen Coyle looked visibly shaken in his technical area, before he ran onto the pitch to his stricken player. As the seconds ticked by, the cameras showed van der Vaart with his head in his hands, Muamba’s team-mate Nigel Reo Coker on his haunches seemingly in prayer, and fans of both sides in tears - a scene sensitively depicted in commentary by Jon Champion.

Minutes passed in shocked silence, punctuated by the occasional chant of Muamba’s name from both sets of fans, before the stadium erupted in applause as the stretcher bearers removed him from the playing area, a scene tempered by Champion pointing out that efforts to resuscitate him were ongoing. The presence in the crowd that day of Spurs fan Dr Andrew Deaner, consultant cardiologist at the London Chest Hospital, was a stroke of luck that possibly saved Fabrice Muamba’s life - not only in terms of the help he could administer on the pitch, but also in guiding the ambulance to take the patient to his specialist hospital in Bethnal Green, rather than the nearer North Middlesex Hospital.

After the stretcher left the arena, and following a brief consultation with Coyle and Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp, referee Howard Webb blew his whistle and led the players off the pitch, eventually abandoning the game.

His heart stopped beating for an astonishing 78 minutes, but the following Monday, Muamba regained consciousness in the London Chest Hospital. Later that year he returned to White Hart Lane, and received an emotional reception as he walked back onto the pitch, both player and fans choking back tears as he pointed to the spot where he had fallen.

He may have lost his playing career that day in 2012, but thanks to the incredible care and persistence of the medical team that treated him, when at times it seemed futile, Fabrice Muamba was given a second chance at life.

These are strange times… football fans across the world are being forced to go cold turkey, as the sporting world, like many other things, has ground to a necessary halt due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Discussions are taking place at the highest levels of the sport to try to work out a plan for the resumption of play, which may or may not see the domestic and European competitions reach their conclusions, decisions that may or may not result in the postponement of Euro 2020 this summer.

But people don’t suddenly stop thinking of the beautiful game - it’s impossible given that only a few weeks ago we seemed to have a match on every single night of the week to watch. So rest assured, we’ll be filling this downtime with some insightful and fact-filled pieces about the game we love, starting with this one… about famous footballing Brunos.

The fortunes of Manchester United have turned the corner in startling fashion since the addition of Bruno Miguel Borges Fernandes in the January transfer window, so let’s start with him.

Born in 1994 in Porto, Bruno’s ascent to superstardom wasn’t immediate. He played youth football at his local club Boavista - a mid-table Portuguese side living in the shadows of the city’s main club FC Porto. But before graduating to the first team, Bruno left the club, and the country, to join Italian side Novara, who were then in Serie B. A year later he moved on, and up, to join top flight club Udinese, spending three seasons in the far North East of Italy, as the club repeatedly battled to retain their Serie A status.

Then came another step up, and some recognition of his ability, with a move to Sampdoria, before a return to his home country in 2017 in an €8.5m deal with Sporting Lisbon - who obviously felt like they were getting a good deal given that they inserted a buyout clause of €100m. It was here that Bruno really began to look like the real deal - winning the Portuguese Player of the Year award, and getting international recognition. The attention of Manchester United, and others, was piqued, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer got his man in January for an initial fee of €55m. In a world of inflated transfer fees, and based on the impact Bruno has made at Old Trafford so far, this looks like a fantastic deal for Manchester United - he has even been named Premier League Player of the Month for February - he only joined United on January 30th.

So what about other footballing Brunos? The one who immediately springs to mind is the combative Spanish full-back Bruno Saltor Grau, who played over 200 games for Brighton before retiring in 2019. Bruno became such a popular and influential figure at the Amex that he was invited to join the coaching staff after his playing career came to an end at the age of 38. Latterly known for his impressively bushy beard and shaved head - an image that struck fear into many a left-winger who came up against him - he retired as a club legend and fans favourite.

To complete this mini round-up of Brunos, we’re off to South America. The notoriety of this particular player - goalkeeper Bruno Fernandes das Dories de Souza - comes from his off the field behaviour rather than his ability between the sticks. It all started pretty well for Bruno, his performances in his native Brazil seeing him linked with possible moves to AC Milan and Barcelona, but it all unravelled in 2010 when his mistress disappeared. Bruno was arrested, and charged with murder, kidnapping and concealing a body. The victim’s remains were never found, and Bruno was sentenced to 22 years in jail. Less than 7 years later, he was released from prison, and joined Boa Esporte - prompting a number of the club’s sponsors to withdraw as a result. The player showed little sign of contrition, telling reporters: “Dude, what happened, happened. I made a mistake, a serious one, but mistakes happens in life – I’m not a bad guy. People tried to bury my dream because of one mistake, but I asked God for forgiveness, so I’m carrying on with my career, dude. I’m starting over.”

Unfortunately for this dude, he was rearrested in 2017 and his football career would seem to be over.
