Next week - Wednesday 8 December - Paraorchestra will perform a very special rendition of Henryk Górecki’s 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs’ with acclaimed soprano Victoria Oruwari! and Charles Hazlewood. This harmonic ‘spiritual minimalist’ composition is presented in the deep, vast, and dark splendour of Bath Abbey.

The performance will take place beneath Luke Jerram's ‘Museum of the Moon’ installation and invites audiences to move freely around the musicians for a fully immersive and unique experience of this cathartic and hauntingly beautiful work.

Symphony of Sorrowful Songs with Paraorchestra: A Musical Installation at Bath Abbey – The Bath Festival

Delighted to announce that we will be performing Górecki’s 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs' on Wed 8 Dec at Bath Abbey with soprano Victoria Oruwari, conducted by Charles Hazlewood as part of Bath Festivals.

It's a hauntingly beautiful and transcendent Polish lament about loss, and music that meets us somewhere in the current zeitgeist.

What's more, we'll be performing this meditative work beneath Luke Jerram's installation of #MuseumOfTheMoon 🌚 for a stunning centrepiece. It'll be a roaming event, with the orchestra placed in the centre of the knave facing inwards. Audiences will be free to wander, explore and gaze from altering perspectives, collect thoughts, and all in the run up to Christmas too.

Tickets on sale from today from Bath Festivals website here: bit.ly/sorrowfulsongs 🚀

Still on a high after a beautiful show and wonderful audience feedback from 'The Unfolding' on Friday night. It was the first live performance of our collaboration album with Hannah Peel, conducted by Charles Hazlewood, which took place St George's Bristol. The evening was also complemented by Lloyd Coleman's gorgeous new work 'Latent Bloom'.

Thanks for joining us for a magical evening and sharing your insightful feedback with us – it made us feel very proud. 💙

'I don’t think I’ve ever witnessed a live performance that was so breathtaking and forward-thinking in its creation of a sonic atmosphere' – Audience member @ConnThornton on Twitter

A big thank you to Bristol Beacon for their support with the event and to the staff at St George's Bristol for accommodating a generous level of socially-distanced seating and ventilation, making attendance possible for audiences who would not otherwise have felt comfortable.

Wonderful Life by Black performed by Brett Anderson, Charles Hazlewood, and Paraorchestra

On this national #DayOfReflection marking the anniversary of the UK’s first lockdown, we reflect on the unparalleled consequences for disabled, D/deaf, and neurodiverse people over the past 12 months, including those that we work with.

Disproportionate numbers of people with disabilities have been forced to shield, have had their lives fundamentally altered by the restrictions in society, been unable to work, suffered hardship, or have sadly lost their lives to Covid-19.

In the cultural sector, we support our colleagues in the
We Shall Not Be Removed movement advocating for deep-rooted change. The #7InclusivePrinciples still remain a vital part of rebuilding an inclusive & diverse industry, ensuring that the progress of the last decade is not lost.

We are all still navigating a way out of these dark times but today we offer our own message of hope, the track ‘Wonderful Life’, taken from our most recent project, and performed by Paraorchestra, Charles Hazlewood and Suede's Brett Anderson.

Our Story

Paraorchestra is the world’s first large-scale integrated virtuoso ensemble of professional disabled and non-disabled musicians.

Paraorchestra Showreel

Our mission is to redefine what an orchestra can be. We see it as an extraordinary and perfectly synchronised body of instruments that draws on the tradition of centuries but is enriched and expanded by the talents, the instruments and the zeitgeist of the 21st century.

The visible participation of talented disabled and non-disabled musicians playing old and new repertoire, that includes digital or assistive instruments alongside traditional ones, is a step-change in the world of orchestral music. This new ‘breed’ of orchestra belongs at rock festivals just as much as in a concert hall; reaching the broadest range of audiences.
