Abilene Clay Sports

Abilene Clay Sports Founded in 1958 as the “West Texas Sportsman’s Club”, Abilene Clay Sports continues to offer the best in clay target games.
(19)

We offer registered sporting tournaments all year with some of the best targets around, and of course we always welcome our guests! Some of the largest corporate and non-profit benefit events in West Texas are hosted by Abilene Clay Sports. Sporting Clays is a great economical way to entertain your customers or clients, or provide a fun means of entertainment for your employees. Let us arrange a corporate package for a day of entertainment on the sporting course. Call or Email us for more information. In addition to Sporting Clays, 5-Stand, Trap and Skeet, Abilene Clay Sports is pleased to offer Helice, or “ZZ-Bird” shooting on our regulation shooting field. We can offer instruction for beginning shooters at your request. It was once said that sporting clays was similar to “golf with a shotgun”, but when was golf ever this fun!

The West Texas Sportsman’s Club, (later named Abilene Gun Club and then Abilene Clay Sports) newly formed club Board of Directors in 1958 determined that club needed a day-to-day manager. One of the locals that was an active skeet shooter was Abilene sportsman Dan Daniels. Dan could be seen most weekends at the club wearing his trademark brown shooting vest emblazoned with “D and D Guns”, a local gun store that he operated. The Board decided that Dan was a great choice to handle the daily operations of the club and handle the registered NSSA and ATA shoots. Dan decided to cease the operation of his gun store and be the clubs full time manager. By all accounts, the relationship between Dan and the club was excellent, and his operational skills and personality was credited with the growth the club experienced of the next few years. Shown here is Dan Daniels, along with his personal shooting vest that he wore at the club. The "Guns” portion of his vest embroidery was removed when he closed the business and became then full time club manager. Dan’s vest is from my personal collection.

When our clubs founder Ira Yaw walked the eastern banks of Lake Fort Phantom in 1958 to scout a location for the newly founded clay target club, he envisioned a club with skeet, trap, a clubhouse and small rifle range and a family atmosphere. With the help of local donors and the initial sale of life memberships (at $100.00 each), he was able to start construction on the clubs shooting fields. In short order the club was built, and targets were thrown. For the next nine years, the club grew in membership, the number of targets thrown grew and grew, and overall, the vision of Ira Yaw was by all accounts a tremendous success. The growth was in fact so fast that at the end of those nine years, the club needed more skeet and trap fields and more room. So in 1967, the club migrated to our current location south of Lake Kirby. More about that later. A few years ago I embarked on a quest to actually find the old club and see what remained. Few people still survived that knew the actual location, so I did some aggressive studying of aerial photos to see if I could find the location. After some time I saw the unmistakable footprints of trap fields. Now knowing the location I trekked out to see what remains. In my next post, I will show what I found, discovered, and what remains today. Shown here is the aerial image that I used to find the club ruins, and from some site investigations, have overlaid the configuration of the club. Fascinating.

Abilene Clay Sports is now in our 62nd year of operation, a feat envied by most gun clubs. But how many of you know who STARTED the club? In 1957 Abilene sportsmen Ira Yaw decided that folks needed a place shoot skeet, which at that time, the sport of skeet had been around for 28 years. Ira and his son owned and operated Abilene Marine on Treadaway. Ira obviously knowing the areas around Lake Fort Phantom approached the City leaders and struck a deal to build Abilene’s first actual gun club on the east side of the lake. The Club was called the West Texas Sportsman’s Club (later called Abilene Gun Club, and ultimately Abilene Clay Sports). Membership was $5.00/year with a lifetime membership priced at $100.00. The lifetime memberships were sold to help raise funds for construction. Shown here is our founder, Mr. Ira Yaw, and an original AGC membership poster from my collection.

Most of you know that I have, over the past 40 years of clay target shooting collected quite a lot of historical artifacts (enough that the museum in San Antonio has inquired about obtaining some of it) that deal with skeet, trap, and sporting clays. I also serve as the unofficial club historian. So I thought it might be fun to show some of this stuff on a periodic basis. How many of you know that in addition to the five basic gauges of cartridges (.410, 28, 20, 16, and 12), there were also the big 4 gauge, the 8 gauge, and the 32 gauge? Shown here compared to the Bornaghi Gold 12 gauge for comparison. There is also a fairly common 10 gauge. I have a case of those around here somewhere! More to come!

Congratulations to ACS member Hunter Barnes!

Pretty speechless to say the least...... I’ve been coming to the San Antonio junior rodeo shootout for 6 years chasing these two scholarships and buckles, and after a long 4 days of shooting I finally did it I finally get to bring it home! I’ve been blessed will all of the support from so many people along the way, and to be able to bring home $20,000 in scholarships and the buckles I’ve chased for so long, there’s no better feeling! Can’t thank SanDee Pate Barnes and David Barnes for driving me across the state and nation for so long chasing shoots weekend after weekend! Clayton Nance I wouldn’t be here without your help these past 6 years, it’s been a long road and we’re just getting started! Congrats to all of the other scholarship winners!!
