The Crooked Road and our region has lost a great friend and ambassador. Gerald Anderson, musician, luthier, and wonderful human being passed away yesterday at home in Troutdale. Gerald began his foray into the world of instrument making in Wayne Henderson's shop many years ago, eventually building his own reputation as a sought after luthier of guitars and mandolins produced from his own shop in Troutdale. Gerald's association with Wayne also marked the beginning of his playing guitar, mandolin, and bass primarily, although he also performed and competed on autoharp and other instruments.
There was never anyone more willing to share his talents with those who asked than Gerald, whether in playing or building musical instruments. He was devoted to his siblings, parents and cousins, helping them through tough times on many occasions.
Gerald was one of the kindest people you would likely ever meet, and his gentle nature will be sorely missed at many a gathering of his many friends and fellow musicians.

Twin fiddles. Nothing like it.

Here's a little sample of what bluegrass music sounds like by the people who helped Bill Monroe create it. Flawless.

Could not be more proud of these young men. This duet of "Have You Someone in Heaven Awaiting" was recorded by Ricky Skaggs and Tony Rice on a landmark album from many years ago. The concert Carson and Presley presented on Tuesday at the McGlothlin Center for the Arts at Emory & Henry College with fellow musicians Austin Tate, Ben Marshall and Clay Russell was so far beyond their years it boggles the mind.
Thanks to Julie Barker for the video and to the wonderful folks who support the Homecoming - Emory & Henry College, Abingdon Rotary Club, Rotary Club of Washington County, Food City, Blue Ridge Beverage Company, Inc., and WCYB.

HOW COOL IS THIS? The Cube Dance at the Moss Arts Center, Virginia Tech is going on right now and it was an experiment. What would it look like if the movement of dancers was gathered with motion sensor equipment and displayed on screen. Well now we know.
