At Greenhill, we believe the arts are vital to a complete education. Our goal in every Fine Arts classroom is to invite our young scholars to look at themselves and their fellow human beings with curiosity and generosity; traits central to Greenhill’s mission. The goal of the Greenhill Fine Arts Department is to inspire our students to not only express themselves and discover a passion for the arts but ultimately to give them an opportunity to hone their artistic gifts.

This past Saturday, we had several band members travel to Melissa HS for the ATSSB Region 24 Jazz auditions.

Kaden Nathani ’22 earned 1st chair on tenor saxophone and also earned 2nd chair on alto saxophone. He qualified for Area on both of those instruments and chose alto saxophone for the next round of auditions. That recording, happening next Wednesday, will determine if he makes the ATSSB All-State Jazz Band.

Greenhill School | Summer

ACTING: DEVELOPING TECHNIQUE
GRADES 9–12
INSTRUCTOR: Terry Martin
LOCATION: Greenhill School
SCHEDULE: June 14-July 2, 9:00 am-12:30 pm
35 Total Class Hours
COST: $750

Are you prepared for performance in college and college auditions? This class is for students who are serious about acting (Stage or Film), are majoring or planning to major in Performance in College. Acting: Developing Technique is an exploration of the skills and practice of being an actor. Through exercises and improv, students will refine their observation and concentration skills: learn to listen carefully to other actors and pay keener attention to their own responses. Through dialogue and scene work in pairs, young actors learn to engage immediately and directly with their partners. They will learn a step-by-step process through the demanding and thrilling exercises of the renowned Meisner Approach to free themselves from self-consciousness and the pressures of performance to achieve truthfulness on the stage and film. Each student will end the class with two contrasting monologues appropriate for college auditions. Mr. Martin is an award-winning actor and director and has taught and studied the Meisner Technique for over 30 years. Martin has coached former students into many of the top Acting Conservatories in the country, and his students regularly appear on television and in major motion pictures. Acting: Developing Technique is limited to 12 students.

Please help me congratulate Erica Fulbright '23 and Joshua Timmons '21, who participated in the August Wilson Monologue Contest locally this weekend. Of 52 local students competing, Erica and Joshua are among the 16 chosen to move on to the regional finals, which will occur on March 6. At these finals, the top three will be decided. They will each receive a cash scholarship, and the top two will compete in the national finals of the AWMC in May.

August Wilson was a playwright whose "Century Cycle" consists of 10 dramas about the African-American experience, each set in a different decade of the 20th Century. At the Cycle's core are the soaring lyrical monologues that take the song, laughter, pain, and rich content of African-American life and place it in the mouths of the greatest and most varied ensemble of characters created since Shakespeare. Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom," now a major motion picture, is a likely Best Picture candidate at the Oscars this year.

The National August Wilson Monologue Competition has been held annually since 2009. There are twelve regional partners who each can send two finalists to the national competition. SMU is the local partner.

Congratulations again to Erica and Joshua.

Fine Arts Virtual Holiday Concert

The Fine Arts Department annually does a Holiday Concert Sing-Along in Rose Hall as a send-off on the last day before the holiday break. Unfortunately, we all could not gather together for the sing-along this year. Still, our amazing Performing Art teachers and students offer this virtual version to build your holiday spirit. Follow the link below for the video. Also, I have included a link to our video version of Greenhill's Annual Kindergarten Nutcracker.

To highlight the remarkable and diligent work being done in the Greenhill Fine Arts Department, we are initiating Fine Art Fridays. As we continue to create these weekly glimpses, we will showcase classes and students from every division. This first episode focuses mostly on Middle School Fine Art Classes. Also, we realize it isn't Friday, but in light of the fact this is the last day before our Thanksgiving Holiday, we decided to release early. Stay tuned to this and other Greenhill Fine Arts social media channels for future glimpses into the Greenhill Fine Arts Department.

Our Story

GREENHILL IS AN ARTIST'S UTOPIA

With over 65 performing and visual arts courses, copious extracurricular opportunities, an accomplished faculty and world-class facilities, it's no wonder Greenhill inspires so many students to discover and honor their artistic gifts.

"Our goal in Preschool and Lower School is to introduce students to a wide variety of opportunities in the arts starting the moment they first set foot on campus. We establish foundational skills that will let them pursue their individual interests in depth as they transition into Middle and Upper School," - Terry Martin, Head of Fine Arts
