San Felasco Gate2Gate

San Felasco Gate2Gate Gainesville's Premier 25k and 50k trail race! The Gate to Gate Trail Race will showcase some of the best trails that North Central Florida has to offer.

The race begins in the northern region of the San Felasco Hammock Preserve State Park just outside of Alachua, Florida and only a few miles from I-75 or Gainesville. Gate2Gate Trail Run

Howdy all!!
We have been a little quiet, but that doesn't mean we are not through the roof excited about the return of Gate2Gate on October 23, 2021!!

If you haven't registered, now is the time. I was able to get an increase of 50 participants for this year's race, for a total of 250 spots for both distances. I am sure this race will sell out!

Here's the link for registration:
https://ultrasignup.com/register.aspx?did=84798

We will have course tours as soon as the trails are up to s***f (we've had a good bit of flooding and mud that have hindered park vehicles from getting to sections of the park to take care of downed trees and such from TS Elsa.

Get registered and stay tuned for more!

One of the things I have found while being a trail runner is that you learn to adapt and overcome when obstacles present themselves. Whether it's a section of course that is more difficult than anticipated or there are muscle cramps or the weather turns south, we maintain, we adapt and overcome. A critical part of being successful is retaining hope when things get bad.
That's what I have been doing for the last few months: retaining hope that GateGate would be able to take place safely in the age of COVID-19.
In a normal year, the permits from the Park Service would already be approved and I would have already finalized the new trucker hat designs. I would be working with the medal company and I would be reaching out to previous sponsors and looking into new ones. In June I would begin having twice monthly course tours/training runs that are free and open to anyone. And I would begin looking forward to giving every single finisher a hug at the finish line!
But this year is different, to say the least.
Park group events are limited to less that 10 people.
Social distancing protocols must be maintained.
And, most concerning, COVID-19 cases are surging to unprecedented levels in Florida.

Gate2Gate was created to benefit the community. Money raised goes to the Friends of San Felasco, the group that maintains the amazing trails in San Felasco, and to a local non-profit ( a different one is chosen each year to 'spread the love'). Together, the Gate2Gate community has donated over $13,000 in 4 years.

Holding the race, though, this year, does not appear to be the best way to serve the community.
I cannot imagine how bad I would feel if someone were to be exposed to the coronavirus at Gate2Gate.

We wouldn't be able to have the beer garden at the finish.
Pizza and food trucks wouldn't be available.
Having over 100 high school volunteers out on the course cheering on runners and helping out at the aid stations wouldn't happen.
So many of the things that make Gate2Gate a community event wouldn't be able to happen.

So, I am making the decision to cancel the 2020 edition of Gate2Gate.

For everyone who has already registered, there are 4 options for you:

1. Roll over your registration to 2021.
2. Donate your entry fee to the Friends of San Felasco (allows us to make a significant donation to the group that makes sure the trails are in the best condition for us to enjoy during this crazy time)
3. Request a 50% refund (allows us to still make a donation to the Friends of San Felasco)
4. Request an 80% refund (20% covers misc processing fees like the Ultrasignup processing fee)

Registered participants will receive an email with a link to a Google Form to record your refund preference.

I hope all of you are healthy and well and that I will get to see you at the finish line in 2021!

UPDATE 10/19

Howdy, Runners!!

Tomorrow is the big day!
We cannot wait to have you join us for the 3rd Gate2Gate Trail Run 25k/50k!!
We have been putting in overtime this week making sure you will have the best possible race experience.

Packet pick up starts tonight at Swamp Head Brewery (4pm-8pm).
There will be day of packet pick up starting tomorrow at 6am at the Start/Finish.

We do have one change from the previous years:
Due to a permitting issue with the City of Alachua, there will NOT be a "beer garden" at this year's event.
We had been doing everything we could to make it happen this year, and I will not go into all of the details, but the short version is it is not happening this year.
The Beer Garden WILL be back for next year.
Since there will not be a Beer Garden, please remember that there is no alcohol allowed at a State Park and none will be provided by the event organizers.
I am very sorry about this.
After the event, when I send out the post-race report to all of you, I will include a Discount Code for $5 off next year's event. You can use that $5 to buy yourself a beverage of your choice 😃

Other News:
Melton Timing is back again this year to provide the best timing services in the ultra business!
There will be a mat at the South Gate Aid Station and live updates online so your friends and family can follow your progress.

LINK: my.raceresult.com/110578

The course is closed to pacers of any kind. Please do not go out on the course for any reason if you are not a registered runner.

Pets are not allowed at the event, per Park Rules.

The course marking is complete.
We put out over 600ft of Pink Ribbons (it's the perfect month to have as many pink ribbons on the course as possible!).
When you get to an intersection, follow the ribbons.
There are confidence markers along the trails in between intersections to let you know you are going the right way. You should not go more than 1/4 mile at any time without seeing a ribbon (*if you are looking!) 😃
The intersections are VERY well marked with at least a half-dozen ribbons showing the way. There are even directional arrows out there if there could be some confusion with a trail intersection that had some ambiguity.

Special note about the "Island":
There is one water crossing. It is TINY. A few weeks ago it was a flowing river. Now it is maybe 2 steps across and ankle deep. Some of you could jump over it.
You MUST follow the flagging through the water crossing. Going anywhere else is OFF COURSE. Some people have used a way around the water and have cut an unauthorized trail in the woods. This is bad for the Park. Please don't go off course anytime, but especially during the race.

Drop Bags for 50k
There will be an area for 50k drop bags at the Start/Finish. You will be able to access them at the 25k turnaround. You will also be able to access your cars and see any crew/friends at the turnaround. Otherwise the course is closed to pacers/crew.

Save the date:
Our next course tour will be on 9/29!

Here are the 2019 Gate2Gate 25K/50K Trail Run - Finish Line Photos. Apologies for the delay. We did not anticipate the technical difficulties with the previous photo site. You will be able to download the photos etc. We will be uploading the course photos to Flickr this some time this weekend. I am attending a 2 day conference at the moment and WiFi speed is not the best.

EVENT PHOTOS. We took almost 1500 pictures for the 2019 Gate 2 Gate 25K/50K Trail Run. Links to the photos will be made available tomorrow by the end of the day. Two links will be provided: Course Photos and Finish Line Photos. Congratulations to all who participated in the event!
Hi, are there going to be photos from the g2g yesterday? Finish line, checkpoints, etc. Thanky.
Special thanks to Patrick Gallagher and all the volunteers!! Your hard work did not go unnoticed and makes Gate2Gate top notch! Congratulations to all the runners!! It was fun racing with you.
I'm travelling down to compete in the race for the first time in a couple weeks but couldn't make any of the course tour runs since I'm way out of state. I've studied the 2018 Strava activities and it looks like the main "hills" are at miles 2, 6, 8, and 11 (and of course repeating for the second loop in the 50k). What kind of course tips/advise would anyone be willing to provide to a new ultra runner and first time participant in this event?
Just signed up! 🤗
Ryan Powell
Please post updates when price increases are happening. The reminder is helpful. Are there other deadlines for price increases? Thanks.
What a great race. I’ll be back next year for another round.
