The Alapaha Station Celebration got off the ground as a festival marking the centennial of Alapaha in 1981. Our annual event extols community awareness and genuine fun in a safe, family environment and is held during the second weekend of November. A parade, free entertainment, arts and crafts, kids' rides, classic cars and tractors, delicious food, a worship service, and much more are just around the corner.
Our 2019 theme, “Go Tigers! Saluting Alapaha Elementary School, depicts the ferocious tiger mascot in either a royal blue or gold shirt. On Friday evening, November 8, at 6 p.m. a reunion of school alumni will mark the 25th anniversary of the school closing as well as the 80th anniversary of the Alapaha Gym opening.
Regional talent, including country traditionalists the Danny Dawson Band and Tammy Kendrick and the Country Boys, will perform throughout Saturday, November 9, following the 10:30 a.m. parade. Our 4 p.m. headliner is statuesque chanteuse Ashley Campbell, a multifaceted instrumentalist and songwriter from Arizona who happens to be the youngest child of Grammy-winning Rhinestone Cowboy Glen Campbell.
Bro. Jimmy McMillan of Glory Church will wrap up the celebration with a Community Worship Service on Sunday, November 10, at 11 a.m. inside the gym with music conducted by Gail Powell and the Alapaha Methodist Church Choir.
The Alapaha Station Celebration brings our community together for a weekend of fun and enables people with limited financial resources the opportunity to enjoy an entertainment roster featuring a professional singer at no cost to them. No two ways about it, folks will leave with an appreciation for why Alapaha is nicknamed the "little town with a big heart."
Celebration-propelled revenue impacts the town and county. The annual, spectacularly blessed Alapaha Easter Passion Play counts the celebration as a sponsor. Funds have been contributed to the Alapaha Fire Department and individuals who have experienced house fires or other emergencies. Flags and Christmas decorations have been purchased for the community. The celebration committee also played a prominent role in the mammoth Alapaha Gym restoration project in 2013 which revitalized the historic structure for future community functions.
