GE40 Trail Run

GE40 Trail Run The Glacial Esker 40 (GE40) is a trail race at the Chain-O-Lakes State Park in Albion Indiana offering a 20 mile and 40 mile options.

10/25/2020

We’ve made the decision to not move forward with the 2021 Glacial Esker 40 (GE40). As a nonprofit, we often have to make difficult business decisions and this certainly qualifies as one. Please note that this in no way impacts the 2021 Indiana Trail 100, as that event will proceed as scheduled.

New 2022 IT100 RD, Nick Brandt, has advised that he’ll review the status of the GE 40 next year and decide whether or not he’ll proceed with a 2022 race. Up for consideration will potentially include shifting the GE40 race date to another time of year or changing the format, if it moves forward at all.

We thank all our past participants and volunteers for being part of this event over the last few years. Stay tuned for future announcements.

03/16/2020

With Governor Holcomb’s announcement today (3/16/20) that the State of Indiana will adhere to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) recommendation that no in-person event consist of 50 or more people for the next eight weeks, the 2020 Glacial Esker 40 is cancelled.

We will be in touch with our participants via email in the coming days to review the cancellation options. These options will be predicated upon our policies and the direction of Chain O’Lakes State Park (host site of the Glacial Esker 40), among other considerations. We believe we have a creative solution that will be amenable to our participants.

Along with everyone else, we are saddened by the recent developments of COVID-19, but we all have our roles to play going forward to contain the coronavirus. We urge each of you to follow the CDC guidelines, with regards to proper hygiene, social distancing, and mass gatherings. This is not the making of any of us, yet we all have to be part of the solution. Please email me at [email protected] if you have any questions.

Keep a good attitude and continue to run, preferably on a peaceful trail.

03/14/2020

The Ignite Trail Series is working with various state and county agencies to assess and determine the viability of hosting the Glacial Esker 40 on 4/25. At this time, the event is still scheduled. However, conditions are changing rapidly, and we will make the appropriate responses to those changes, as the safety of everyone involved is our highest priority. You can be assured that we will take great care in deciding whether or not to move forward in this situation.

We will continue to provide updates here and at our website, so that you can be readily informed. As we are all aware, many other events have already been cancelled. Most of those cancellations had their decisions made for them, per mandates from their state governor, state park, local agency, etc. That could happen to our event as well. If so, we will communicate that as soon as possible.

If the decision is not already made for us on a county, state, or even federal level, we will make a decision by early April. We owe it to our runners to exhaust every possibility, within reason. But we also need the appropriate time to continue planning for either scenario. This is a unique situation that requires patience and understanding from everyone.

Thank you.

Igniting the Green

The Glacial Esker 40 continues to Go Green. Our race on 4/25 promotes responsible initiatives to reduce waste and increase composting and recycling. We’ve always taken a zero tolerance approach to litter on the trails and for the second consecutive year we're going cupless.

As part of the entry fee, our runners will receive a cup through HydraPak, which can be used during the GE40. Additionally, Go Green volunteers will be situated at various aid station to assist in composting and recycling efforts. We’ll do everything we can to provide the greenest event for our runners while being sensitive to their race needs.

It’s important for us to simultaneously give back to the park and our runners and what better way to do that than by conserving resources. If you would like to join us for a great experience on 4/25 please click the attached registration link:

Our runners enjoyed a beautiful day on the trails this morning. Everyone ran well, as I can see the training intensity picking up with nine weeks before the GE40.

Many thanks to Amy Bechtold and Teri Garrelts for volunteering their time to help our runners. The likely next training run will be the Spring FA50K, which will take place either 3/28 or 4/4.

Please meet our new volunteer coordinator, Kate Wright. Kate is an outstanding ultra runner and has completed a number of 100 milers, including the Indiana Trail 100 in 2018. A lady of many talents, she was our ham radio coordinator last year.

If you would like to join us in April as a volunteer for the Glacial Esker 40, please contact Kate at the email on the attached link. We're seeking volunteers at various aid stations, as well as packet pickup.

4) Training Runs – The February training run is TBD.

The group will run one loop (20 miles) but some runners will go further and some less. Please note that the GE40 course will go in the opposite direction of the IT100 course. The Saturday winter training runs are a good way for runners considering the GE40 and IT100 to check out the course and discuss strategy with several local ultra runners. We typically see runners from all over the Midwest during these runs.

Please note that some of the designated training runs will have rolling aid stations. But plan on being self-sufficient and have backup hydration/nutrition with you while running.

5) Volunteers – For information on how you can join our team as a volunteer please contact Steve Carr at [email protected].

It was good to be back out with the group today, as trail conditions ended up being better than expected.

Many thanks to Nick Brandt, Garett Carolus, Ashley Cearbaugh, Sherrie Konkle, and Kate Wright for volunteering today. Also, special thanks to everyone that brought food to share with the group.

Training Run Update - Someone in our local group ran the route today that we're planning to run tomorrow. The trails are slick. If you have screw shoes, Yaktrax, Ice Spikes, or anything else that will give you more traction I would recommend using it tomorrow. The person running today didn't have any of this extra traction on and wished he had.

Please note that conditions are going to get cooler overnight. It won't make the trails any less slick but we might get some snow in the morning to help with the grip. Be prepared for anything, as we won't know what we're getting until we're on the course.

Attached are photos of the flail mower we just donated to Chain O'Lakes State Park utilizing GE40/IT100 funds. This purchase replaced the 1974 flail mower the park was using.

When you choose to run one of our races you win and the park wins because all proceeds go back to them. Thank you for helping us give back and making the park better for everyone.

It only took 4 months after we completed the race to celebrate, but we’re finally doing it!
Took advantage of the lower temps today and ran the Virtual GE40 20 mile loop🤗
Took advantage of the lovely temperatures last weekend and completed my "virtual" GE40 trail race at Chain O'Lakes!!! Weather was ideal and trail conditions were perfect! Big shout to my many Ignite teammates who I saw along the trails that day! Thank you for the words of encouragement and signs along the way! I'm super proud of Mae and Jason for finishing their longest distances to date! Nice work you two! It was a pleasure sharing the miles with you!
Another batch of GE40 finishers awards done and waiting for you!!
This looks fun, thanks Amanda Losch! I already have a race scheduled for 4/28 but will have to remember this one for next year/soon! Please do keep me posted of others, thanks and Happy New Year :)
