NEW! Virtual Open Mic!
At our past in-person festivals, we’ve scheduled open mic opportunities where solo players or groups can present songs they’ve worked up. For old pros, this is a way where all of us can hear what they’ve been working on. For players that have never performed in public before, this is a very low key way to start, with lots of encouragement from everyone. If someone is just a bit timid, we’ll even find someone to play along with them.
New for our online registered participants! After the last class ends, there will be a 15-minute break, then we will kick off our Virtual Open Mic! See our updated schedule:http://www.nmdulcfest.com/pdfs/2020.nmdf.schedule.pdf

Is there a song you’d like to share? A tune you’ve been working on? Here’s an opportunity to play your favorite piece! We are limited to an hour, so each person only gets 5 minutes (including you introducing yourself) with 9 slots total. You must have experience modifying Zoom settings such as turning on “Original Sound” so your music will come out nice.

To request a slot, click below to get to the festival website contact page and send an email to Debbie Velasquez/Festival Registration starting October 1st no earlier than 10:00 MDT. We won’t be able to accept earlier requests. After the slots are filled, we’ll coordinate more details with those who will play.
All registered participants and concert goers will receive a link to Virtual Open Mic Zoom meeting with their workshop or concert notification so you can enjoy the music and fun. https://www.nmdulcfest.com/contact.html

Festival History - Colorado Dulcimer Festival

We're all getting a little restless with the current "stay at home" situation, but here's a suggestion from Jim Frye, a fellow dulcimer enthusiast (and frequent attendee to our festival) to help support musicians:

"If you have stable financial resources, this would be a really good time to order books and CDs from dulcimer professionals and support them on Patreon. Their performance and face-to-face lesson income is close to zero. If you want suggestions for names, you can go to

Colorado Dulcimer Festival link below and...

https://www.nmdulcfest.com/archives.html

It’s not that dulcimer players are more worthy of support than other musicians, but they’re our people.

Best wishes,

Jim Frye

Encouraging thought for the day: Age is an overlying medical condition."

Thanks, Jim, wishing all the best to our supporters and dulcimer musicians everywhere!

It is our sad duty to notify our followers that... "Maddie MacNeil, who played both hammered and mountain dulcimers, died on March 22, 2020, a result of a fall at her home. Many know Maddie from her many years as publisher/editor of Dulcimer Players News. She was a wonderful performer on both instruments and had the voice of an angel. Over her career she recorded many albums and authored books on how to play both types of dulcimers. She was an effective workshop leader Many people remember her stirring renditions of "Shenandoah" which she made her signature song."
[This announcement was posted by Ken (last name not posted) on the Everything Dulcimers Forum website]

We remember Maddie's 2016 appearance at our New Mexico Dulcimer Festival (see picture below from that time) and feel privileged that this wonderful person, outstanding dulcimer musician, and influential promoter of everything to do with dulcimers was a part of our festival.

RIP Maddie MacNeil.

"The dulcimer, like Maddie, sings a sweet song."

Our 2019 Official Festival Shirt is now at the printers who are preparing your t-shirt for the festival later this month. Don't delay, get them at the festival ASAP so you can get them in your size.

This year's t-shirt photo was taken at the Quarai Spanish Mission ruins near Punta De Agua, NM. This Mission compound construction was completed in 1632 on top of Native American settlements dating back to 1250. Due to drought, Apache raids and unrest within the Spanish government, it was abandoned only 46 years later.

And lookee there, right in the middle of the steps are a mountain and hammered dulcimer! Very cool...

Some of us from the Festival Board and three volunteers represented the Festival at the Albuquerque Lavender Festival in the North Valley in Ranchos de Albuquerque July 20th and 21st.
Thousands of people braved the heat and many dropped by our tent as we played tunes and shared information about our Festival. We got a very enthused response from more people than we can count so we're looking forward to see new faces at the festival this year both for the workshops and the concerts.
Here are a few photos from Saturday.

Once again our festival has received the support of the Music Guild of New Mexico. Their generosity over the years have made it possible for us to provide a quality festival especially in the case of musicians who, many times are a part of ensembles.

The extra expenses of bringing an ensemble so that each member of the group can contribute to our festival wouldn't always be possible without the Guild's help.

Our Festival Board of Directors and volunteers took part in the Albuquerque Folk Fest this past weekend in a number of ways.

Both Irma and Scott presented a variety of workshops while others (RJ & Carolyn) played some street music to draw attention to the festival. And many also served as assistants in Scott and Irma's workshops.

The Dulcimer Theology was preached, taught, and we (think we) won some converts!

This is not a dulcimer, but a fellow musician that I play my mountain dulcimer with on occasion could use some help. Randy Granger, randygranger.net, was in Albuquerque for a gig last weekend. His car was broken into and his Handpan was stolen along with a few other articles. This is the Pan minus the clips. A police report was made. Randy is a self supporting musician, so when you are out and about in the Albuquerque area, please keep a lookout for this instrument. Randy is a wonderful person and musician. Thank you
