Event planners at work

As the spread of COVID slows and vaccinations increase, organizers for annual Huntingdon County events are cautiously optimistic their gatherings will resume in 2021.

After the county’s large scale events were events were canceled in 2020 because of the pandemic, state Rep. Rich Irvin. believes that event organizers should plan on having their events. “A lot of these large-scale events take months of planning,” Irvin said. “I believe the event organizers should plan for the events to happen because with COVID vaccines being released and COVID positive numbers going down, it should be safe to host these outdoor events. That could change, but for now, they should plan on these events happening so they are prepared.”

Irvin also stated that even though it might be safe to host these events, everyone should still take precautions. I know that people of Pennsylvania are anxious to get back to normal but in my opinion, everyone should still follow state and CDC guidelines, like wearing masks and social distancing,” he said. “We aren’t out of the woods yet. However, it all comes down to the individual’s personal responsibility. If someone does not believe they need to wear a mask, it is up to them but it is my recommendation that everyone should take precautions.”
Large-scale events like Huntingdon’s Mayfest, the Huntingdon County Fair, Cassville Oktoberfest and Hartslog Day are tentatively scheduled for 2021.

“We are still tentatively planning to have Mayfest this year,” said Mayfest organizer Linda DeArmitt. “Most of our vendors are coming back. We decided to have the event this year because with COVID vaccines becoming more available and COVID numbers going down, we believe it will be safe to host. We still
ask people to follow guidelines, like wearing a mask and social distance when possible.”

The festival is planned for 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, April 24. The festival spans Washington Street from William Smith Street to Eighth Street with each block representing a different historical era, including Renaissance, Colonial era, Victorian era, the 1950s and Woodstock.

The Huntingdon County Agricultural Association, better known as the fair board, which sponsors the Huntingdon County Fair, made the decision to cancel the 2020 fair, but they are eager to get back to work planning this year’s event.

“There is no official decision yet but we are cautiously optimistic and have started planning for the fair,” said fair board president Mark Miller. “We are waiting on guidance from the state’s Department of Agriculture and the governor, as they will be releasing plans on how to safely host a fair soon.”
Miller believes that the fair is an important staple of the community.

“The fair has deep roots in Huntingdon County,: he said. “A lot of our youth showcase their projects during the fair. I believe it’s important to have the fair so our youth can have a great learning experience.” Cassville Oktoberfest is also scheduled for its 45th event, an anniversary that had to wait because the event was canceled in 2020. Organizer Larry Hicks has started planning the event and encourages everyone to come to Cassville the last weekend in September.

“As of right now, we are planning on having Oktoberfest Friday, Sept. 24, through Sunday, Sept. 26,” said Hicks. “It is too far away to say what guidelines and restrictions the event will have, but people are welcome to wear masks and social distance but as of right now, we are not enforcing it.”

Alexandria’s Hartslog Day chair Rachelle Hopsicker is also planning for the October event that showcases the town’s heritage. “We are currently planning Hartslog Day like normal,” Hopsicker said. “It won’t be until August where we will decide on whether or not we will actually host it. We will follow all of the state and CDC guidelines. Our community needs this event to happen. It is an important staple for the town.”

Hopsicker thanked the community for their support in 2020, despite the event being canceled due to the pandemic.
“Hartslog Day is a big fundraiser at the museum,” Hopsicker stated. “Not having it last year was very difficult. I want to thank our community for stepping up and giving us the support that we needed.”

Representatives from other events, including the Huntingdon County Firemen’s Convention and Creation Fest, could not be reached as of press time, but it is the hope of many that those, too, will return in one way or another this year.

Thank you for the overwhelming support for the Friends of the Hartslog Heritage Museum.

Since 1977, the Hartslog Heritage Museum has pursued its mission to preserve the history and culture of Alexandria
and the Hartslog Valley. We are grateful that we have been given the opportunity to be the stewards of the stories
and artifacts that have shaped this area into the vibrant community that it has become. That mission continues in
2020 despite the setbacks we’ve all experienced across the country.

Having settled into the former First National Bank Building, 2020 started off with such promise. We planned the celebration of the bank building’s centennial, scheduled numerous monthly events and looked for ways to engage the community with the collections we have displayed in our two locations. Sadly, it was not meant to be. Since the spread of Coronavirus, we have had to cancel or postpone all events at the museum so far this year. In addition to our monthly programs and exhibits, we have had to forgo our beloved Hartslog Day for 2020--it was simply impossible given the current conditions.

Postponing Hartslog Day has been especially frustrating because this decision comes at a time when everyone who lives in or has ties to our little community is struggling in one way or another. Hartslog Day is more than a craft fair, it is truly about a community togetherness. Because of this, we are resolved to still commemorate Hartslog Day in a small way this year and come back with an even bigger celebration in 2021. I’m sure we will all need it by then!

As we continue our mission to preserve the history of Alexandria and the Hartslog Valley, we realize the challenges we are up against. Hartslog Day is our main source of revenue. Without it, we are in unknown and dangerous territory. This year, more so than ever, we are reliant on support from all those who hold the Museum, Hartslog Day, and the work we engage in dear. In addition to financial contributions, we are run completely by volunteers. If you have time and talents you think would be useful, please let us know! The donation of your time and financial support ensures that we will be able to do our work in the future to preserve our past. Please consider making a contribution and become a Friend to the Museum today.
Membership is $10.00 per individual or $20.00 per family. These dues and donations from the community will helpus to keep the lights on this year and come back even stronger next year. We welcome your suggestions for future programming and exhibits. We also welcome our community members to volunteer to be a part of our museum family by helping at Hartslog Day or any other time during the year.

Thank you for your past and future support.

Sincerely,

Jon Knepp,
President
Hartslog Heritage Museum Board of Direct

I would like to take a quick second to thank all the fantastic “strangers” that rushed into action and helped us pick up our “mess” after a gust of wind blew our canopy side into our display and sent everything crashing to the ground. You - with the help of your children!! - made an unfortunate, heartbreaking situation better. Doing outdoor shows is a huge risk when it comes to the weather and nothing can be more uncontrollable. But with all your kind gestures and words, it brings some happiness in a world full of negativity. It’s nice to know some really great people (raising really awesome kids) are still out there. The whole situation happened so fast and is pretty much a blur. I wish I knew who you all were, but THANK YOU!! Sincerely, Maple Leaf Designs, Custom Woodworking & Laser Engraving
I bought a lava bead bracelet there today and the stand was so busy I forgot to get a business card. I have no idea who the vendor was but I was wondering if there is a vendor list I could scan through? Maybe someone else here might have an idea... I'm very interested in another if I can find who I bought from.
There was an Author that had a booth that did short poems one was peanut butter something I’m looking for who it was if someone could point me in the right direction
Let's play a game..what has changed in the last two years? If you guessed who is running the festival then you are right. Now let's talk about why this is important. I noticed that this year there were alot of empty spaces. Vendors that have been coming for years are no longer interested in coming. Hartslog is not the only festival going on this weekend there is at least 3 others that other vendors and ourselves have chosen to not go to and come to hartslog because we have been doing it for years and we enjoy it. The people are nice (except this certain one) the customers are enjoyable. We have been doing shows long enough to know how this works and if we do something wrong we do not do it out of spite or on purpose. By all means come talk to us like a adult, but know what you are talking about and do not come at us like you are ready for a fight. This is the first interaction we have had with you so I would like to know why we deserve the treatment we got? Every other vendor around us got to see you act like a dictator with a clipboard. And your right we will not be back after numerous years of choosing, yes choosing, we won't be back. I also know of a few others that won't be back either. Your festival is being ruined by this lady. Yes I do know her name but I am being nice here. You will see a decline of your vendors I suggest you take a hard look at your people. Respect is a two way street. Best wishes
