One week from today, join us in wearing orange for #orangeshirtday on September 30th.

What is Orange Shirt Day?

This day gets its name from Phyllis Webstad's story of entering the mission school for the first time in 1973. She recalls being only six years old & the new orange shirt her grandmother had gotten her. She was especially proud to wear it considering they did not have much money. Phyllis also remembers that her orange shirt was among the first things taken from her when she was stripped upon entering mission school.

This will be a day to remember and a day to heal.

On Saturday, September 18th, our brother Gustavo "Gus" Antone Sr. (Tohono O'Odham) went on to be with the Creator. Many long time members and friends of the Tekakwitha Conference are certainly familiar with his devotion to Saint Kateri and his love for the Catholic faith. We have lost a true warrior. Prayers for a safe journey, Gus.

The images in this post feature just a small sample of Gus' work. He will live on in the stories we keep.

Just over three years ago, a small reception was held to honor an era of excellence, the tenure of our former director, Sister Kateri Mitchell.

Though we continue to explore new ways and means of revitalizing the #TekakwithaConference, we still walk in the footsteps of those who went before us.

When you get a moment, offer up your prayers for the Tekakwitha Conference and it’s future, may we be sensitive to the direction and guidance of the Great Spirit!

While the headlines become more devastating by the day, and while so many of us are already all too familiar with what went on at #indianboardingschools, it seems as though the broader society is just now learning the depth of these injustices for the first time.
For Catholics who are struggling or feel compelled to publicly react in some way, avoid these four responses:

US Catholic Bishops Approve Development of Native American Pastoral Plan

“Drafting the plan is one thing. That’s one mountain to climb, but there’s a taller mountain behind it, and that taller mountain is implementation,” [Robert Barbry II] said. “We can draft letters and plans all day, but it’s going to be what follows that makes the difference.”

The bishops’ voted overwhelmingly to support the creation of a unified and comprehensive approach to ministry for America’s Indigenous peoples.

One of the core tenets of the #TekakwithaConference is to “promote healing through forgiveness and reconciliation.”

If we are to live by our values it is incumbent upon our organization to make room for the conversation about the boarding school period to take place. We must dedicate resources to healing from this trauma - a process that begins with advocating for acknowledgement within our own Catholic communities and at every level of the Church’s hierarchy.

Tonight on EWTN at 7 pm just 15 mins away Watch St. Kateri Tekakwitha ! 🙌💗
What many people do not know is that not all Saints are first Catholic. Saints are chosen for reasons. May be a few I know of... 1. Miracles are attributed to the person. 2. The person has had a life not contradictory to Catholic doctrine. 3. The involved members of the Catholic church needing Saints have a wanting eye. I know these reasons work for Catholic. Isn't it odd this is a one sided deal? It is said that a Catholic Saint with few miracles attributed to he or she is a "small" Saint. The Church can admit to this if they like. Before you charge into welcoming Tekakwitha as a saint, I challenge you, HOW MANY OF YOU WILL BE HEALED BECAUSE OF HERE? Come on, give me a ball park figure?
Pablo Tac (1822-1841) was Luiseño Indian. He was born and raised at Mission San Luis Rey de Francia, located in present-day Oceanside, California. At the age of ten, he left the Mission with Fr. Peyrí and another young neophyte boy, Agapito Amamix. Their destination was Rome. On September 23, 1834, Pablo and Agapito enrolled at the Urban College. There they learned how to be missionary priests, hoping to one day return home to California to shepherd their Luiseño brothers and sisters in Christ. Also while in Rome, Pablo wrote down the memories of his people, the earliest from a California Mission Indian. Meet Pablo Tac is a story of faith, courage and the universality of the Catholic Church. Come and meet Pablo Tac.
