We're increasingly optimistic that we will be able to gather in person for the 2021 Vikingland Band Festival. The Festival committee has discussed options and will refine the plan as we get closer to summer. This year's event will celebrate a step toward normalcy and is designed to provide a performance opportunity for band students who missed an entire marching season last year. 2020 Vikingland Band Festival Virtual Showcase

With social distancing guidelines in effect for 2020, the 36th Annual Vikingland Band Festival in Alexandria, Minnesota, is presented as a virtual showcase. Watch the premiere at the usual parade time: 1:30 PM (Central) on Sunday, June 28.

We invited bands to submit videos, photos and tributes to their seniors; we invited committee members to extend video greetings; and we’ve assembled photos from the archives to make sure all bands in the 2020 lineup are represented.

The result is an uplifting, entertaining and fast-paced 16-minute video presentation.

We look forward to being back on the street in 2021, but in the meantime let’s all march on!

A beautiful message about the summer marching season from the KMS Marching Saints. This band is a previous Vikingland Band Festival "People's Choice" winner and has earned the Class Champion title 11 times. #MarchOn

In accordance with the Executive order 20-41 regarding school activities and in discussion with KMS Administration, it is with great sadness to inform you that the KMS Marching Saints will not be marching this summer. Although it may not come as a surprise given all that is going on, the reality of it is heartbreaking.

The KMS Marching Saints is an activity like none other at our school. This program is the largest co-ed activity at KMS High School and it’s cancellation affects a huge section of our student body. The KMS Marching Saints have been exceptional and premiere Ambassadors of our communities and although we may be sidelined due to Covid-19, I know we will continue to promote our communities with pride as soon as it is deemed safe to do so.

This year's show was to be called “Home”. It has been in the planning stages for nearly a year now. The inspiration for it came from the parade route where we are continually asked “where is KMS?” This show was going to share with parade- goers where we are from and what “home” means to us-through music!

But thanks to recent events it became clear that this show was destined to tell an ever bigger story.
The music chosen a year ago, now perfectly tells the story of what these students are going through, thinking and feeling thanks to Covid-19. It will be a living musical document of this global event for the students and for the people that see this show.

“Home” by Philip Philips, our first song is a popular song whose lyrics inspire us during this uncertainty “Hold on to me as we go, as we roll down down this unfamiliar road, settle down it’ll all be clear, just know you’re not alone ‘cause we are going to make this place your home.” all express emotions we have been feeling now.

Our second song titled “Going Home” is a beautiful and emotional arrangement that perfectly expresses the feeling of things taken from us, life slowing down and figuring out what is important. It expresses the longing and hope we are holding onto during these dark times.

The last song will embody what it will feel like when we are able to get back to things we love! The joy of allowing us to dance again! “Cotton Eyed Joe” was picked as a nod to our rural roots here at KMS and exudes the “happy” we dream about.

So it is my hope that we continue to be creative in telling this story even though we are sitting on the parade curb waiting for the parade to start. I hope to offer some safe and interesting ways to teach this show so we can tell this story as soon as we can!

There will still be a KMS Marching Saints clothing order with a special edition show shirt available to everyone titled “Staying Home”. Online order information for that will be released later this week.

This is not how we hoped to spend our summer and know so many things have been lost already and this is just one more thing! But I know that together we will come out of this and when that happens, we will celebrate KMS Marching Saints style and continue to stay in step like we always have….toes up and eyes with pride!

But until then enjoy your families, enjoy your summer, and look for some correspondence from me about how we are going to move this show forward the best we can….. and most of all….enjoy “staying home”!

Much love ----
Mrs. Diem-KMS Director of Bands and the entire KMS Marching Saints Staff

I wonder was the choreography would look like?!

I am curious do the bands that participate in the festivals during the summer also do contests in the fall? I think it is a great activity. Hopefully one day I will make the trip up to see this wonderful event. Love marching bands!!
Thank you VBF for this past weekend that allows our students to grow as performers and people. We look forward to seeing you again next year!!
To staff and city council, I thought this was a marching band competition not A dance recital. Did any of you watch the color guard? Left...left...left right left. Not a bunch of people running around like chickens in a barn yard with their heads cut off. There were only two bands that marched Fergus Falls and Sartell. Hope you can figure it out and get it right.
so what are u going to do to celebrate your 35th Anniversary next yr?
About to start
