All the wind has kept participation on the big lake down, but seeing a lot of different species from the youths. During the storm this morning we've weighed bullheads, rock bass and a perch. Hope to see more youths tonight at our 8:30 weigh-in. Last night, Ainsley got on the board with a bluegill while brother Ethan somehow caught and released a painted turtle! 🐒

Meanwhile, Shanty Days itself is cancelled, but we'll still be running a kids and adult shore and boat fishing tournament Aug. 5-9! Tickets for that one will be available after the K/D wraps up.

Big-box stores crammed with customers from multiple states, but charter fishermen can't take out small family and friend groups? Seems pretty fishy!

Shark Week may be over for another year, but the 2019 Shanty Days Fishing Contest is just getting started! Our fish can indeed run pretty large, but no worries about sharks β€” unless you count this midnight-made sculpture by Arianna Madden and Jenny Farley on Crescent Beach.

Thanks to generous sponsors, this tournament pays out more than $1,000 in cash and prizes. Tickets cost $3 for youths 15 and under (inland or big lake tickets), $5 for age 16-17 and $10 for age 18 and up.

Get them at Algoma BP, Graf's Mobil, Hooked Up Tackle or Capt. K's. We'll have some available at the marina during marina weigh-in times as well (first ones 9-10:30 a.m. and 8:30-9 tonight, fish cleaning station).

NEW THIS YEAR, if you have fish to weigh outside of the times printed on your ticket stub, you can bring them to Hooked Up Tackle on Steele St.

Special thanks to Capt. K's, Fishin' Magician Charters, Gail Force Sport Fishing, Kirchman Chiropractic, Rueckl Oil and Tri-Bolt LLC.

We added an extra day this year especially hoping it would give family and friends more opportunity to take kids fishing. We did have five earlybirds (and their mentors) take advantage yesterday, including Nikki of Algoma and Lilly of Forestville. Great memories made!
