Rejoice in Recovery

Rejoice in Recovery We are a Christ centered recovery ministry that believes anyone can find freedom from their hurts, hangups, or habits/addiction by accepting God's plan for our lives rather than the messes we can get ourselves into.We believe by learning to look forward rather than living in the messy past, through forgiveness we can find hope.

We know this to be true from our own lives of addiction and the power to overcome through Christ Jesus. The program is a 12 step program with 8 principles. This is what we work from as we learn together how to walk in a productive, free way. We spend an hour of learning and sharing as a large group and then we spend the 2nd hour in gender specific groups where we can have a more open share time. As we grow we will develop more small groups that deal with specific problems, Example would be a group for substance abuse, a group for sexual addiction, a group for over eating, etc. We are looking forward to serving in this community and offering relief to the hurting. May God bless all that will come and join us.

A good meeting tonight. It is so great to watch the Lord at work in newer believers. He is AMAZING!!!

“Therefore if the Son makes you free, you shall be free indeed” (John 8:36).

This is why we believe that a Christ centered Recovery program is the only way to go. "the Son makes you free". One can stop doing whatever it is that he/she does, but there is only one way to be set free from it and its effects. That freedom can only come through Jesus the Christ.

Why Jesus?
I wish to thank you for taking a few minutes to read this important message. In this day of information, there are literally hundreds of opinions and different religions. Most people seeking the truth are understandably confused in a short period of time. Many throw up their hands and say, “forget it!” There is another group that has been told, and believes, that truth is what you make it. Your truth can or may be different than mine. Some would say all religions have some truth and some error so just pick one and God will honor your decision.
Many of these beliefs may bring us some peace of mind as we live our lives. However, I’m convinced that God calls mankind to a more solid understanding of Him. I thank Him over and over for the instruction manual, the Bible, He gave us for direction. We can know the way to Him and experience a joy that comes from truly knowing Him in this life on earth as well as the future afterlife.
God calls us to receive His word by faith. I can say with confidence having experienced the things that He asks us to believe and receive by faith that I am now a child of the living God. For many years I was numbered with the tormented souls that struggle with alcohol and drugs. That resulted in a man of many sorrows then and is now a man of much joy. Some folks have told me that I am brain washed. My response has always been; if there was ever a brain that needed washed, it was mine.
What a refreshing life changing event to have your mind changed by the creator of the universe. This article is titled; “Why Jesus?” because there are sales pitches for different religions, self helps and your name it out there to help you overcome any problem you have in life. From the shrinks to the alter, billions of dollars have been spent trying to find a little relief, looking for something to grab onto and pull oneself together.
What I am about to present to you is a free gift; a gift to be received. My gift was a dramatic experience. Hopefully that makes my story of deliverance more persuasive. It’s not the purpose of this article to get into my life of sin and agony. Rather, I want to tell you of the joy I found. So to save space I’ll just say, “if it was wrong I did it.”
I started out rebelling against what I didn’t like – “life” and at age 38 I was no longer willing,or able, to go any further. I wasn’t quite suicidal but didn’t care to live any longer either. Have you ever been so sick of who you are, that you don’t want to be around yourself? So guilty feeling and wrong; even the right things didn’t bring any satisfaction. That is where I was; a feeling of loneliness even in a crowd. I spent 4 or 5 years trying to control my drink and drugs to no avail. The last 3 years trying detox clinics and AA. Everything was short term recovery. My final conclusion was, nothing could help. I just gave into the addiction and quit fighting. Soon my job was on the line, my wife and kids were leaving and I was not surprised. I didn’t even want me. What does a person turn to when they get to that place?
Throughout my most advanced drinking, my wife had started going to a church trying to avoid going crazy. There was a young pastor that must have liked a challenge, because he would come and look me up about every two weeks. I liked him; he was pleasant and not very pushy. He did tell me on every visit that my problems were nothing that his God couldn’t handle if I would allow him access into my life. He told me that God would not go where he wasn’t invited and although he was powerful, He wouldn’t deliver me unless I was willing. He told me crazy stuff like, I would be forgiven for all my sins, “all my sins” if I would surrender my life to Jesus Christ and receive Him by faith.
In January of 1988 I prayed and ask Jesus Christ to come into my life as he instructed. From then until April, my life was a living hell. It didn’t matter what I did, it went bad. If I hated life before, I hated it worse now. My life and habits had not been changed. All I could see was just more of the same; defeat. On April 6, 1988 I was laying on an old drinking buddy’s house floor after 4 days of drinking. I said to God above, “if you are as merciful as the preacher said you are then take my life. I don’t want to live anymore.” You see I wanted to die. God said, “I’ve wanted your life right along but you were hanging onto it so tight. You wouldn’t let me have it; to take it and mold it into something useful.” Well obviously God didn’t say that to me literally, but that’s the way it played out.
He delivered me that night without me even being aware. A 2000 lb weight of sin and shame I had carried around my whole life was gone. It just kept getting heavier and I kept trying to carry it or cover it up with drugs and alcohol. I wasn’t aware that all of that stuff could even be removed. I finally went to sleep that night and I woke up a different man the next morning. My circumstances were all the same, but I knew it was all going to be okay. I was free. Free to live the balance of my days either adding another load on my back to carry around or free to serve the one who delivered me from that previous load. At the time I didn’t know anything about God’s Word, I just knew what God did. I don’t even know how I knew it, I just did.
The next 30 years have been spent learning God’s Word (the Bible), what It means, who He is, what He is, why Jesus did what He did on the cross.
You can call me brainwashed now and you would be right. I am sold on Jesus Christ. But all I was on April 6, 1988 was an ole drunk with a ton of shame strapped to me that I couldn’t shake. I couldn’t carry it anymore and I couldn’t get rid of it. Why Jesus? He’s the only one that could take it. He’s my Savior, He’s my God.
The truth will set you free (John 8:32). Jesus said, I am the way, the truth and the life, no man comes to the Father except through me (John 14:6).
Not everyone is a drunk and druggy but according to God’s Word everyone is a sinner. Romans 3:23 says all have sinned ……, and sin causes us to be unholy. We can’t get into Gods Holy Kingdom of Heaven with sin. We need to be cleansed. The only one with that ability to cleanse us is Jesus Christ. He paid the penalty, the price for our sins on the cross 2000+ years ago. His blood was spilled as an atonement (covering). The debt to God is covered. There is only one catch. You must believe and receive His gospel message to become a child of God (John 1:12). If you believe, you will follow Him and His teachings.
You can notice in my experience that asking Jesus to come into my life didn’t do a lot for me. When I surrendered my life to Him; the benefits began.
I don’t think that it was wrong to ask Jesus to come into my life. What God has shown me through this is that he doesn’t want to come into our lives of sin and share it with us. He wants to come in and bring us out of it. When I surrendered my life, gave it up, then He went to work. He took the trash out and planted in my heart a desire for Him.
If you would like to experience freedom as I have; a life that’s worth living and also the promise of eternal life in heaven with God. Please consider trusting someone who has nothing to gain from this. I just care. Better yet dare to trust God at his word. He tells the truth.
30 years ago today I met Jesus and have never been even a little sorry. It was the greatest night of my life.
If you want to know how to find this long lasting peace, send me a message.

We are not cured of alcoholism ( or any addiction) what we really have is a daily reprieve contingent on the maintenance of our spiritual condition. - Big Book

It's an interesting thing to me that people don't balk one bit at the word RECOVERY if the have a physical problem that they need to recover from. We will yell from the roof tops, " I am recovering well."

If we struggle spiritually with sin, we want to hide and sit in denial that we need any recovery. This is the very thing Jesus warned about.

Luke 12:4-5 I tell you, My friends, do not be afraid of those who kill the body and after that can do no more. But I will show you whom you should fear: Fear the One who, after you have been killed, has power to throw you into hell. Yes, I tell you, fear Him!…

ATHOUGHT FOR THE DAY:

My dad once said, "I'm never wrong for long because when I find out I am I change my mind."

that was meant to be silly when he said it. Thinking about it though; wouldn't that be a neat way to go through live. Admitting when we are wrong and promptly changing it. Rather than holding on to destructive ways that really don't treat us very well.

“Wholeness is brokenness owned and thereby healed.”

the above quote is from Brennan Manning’s book, Abba’s Child:

We bring that brokenness into the light at Rejoice in Recovery, where we are surrounded by Jesus and our fellow travelers. We are safe here. And, from this ownership, we are healed. Our brokenness is healed by Jesus’s Light and by our exposing our past to those who love us.
Come join us on Monday evening at First Baptist Church 6PM or Tuesday evening 7PM at Corner Bible Church so we can journey together in our healing. Questions 269-217-3928 or message

Once in a while I feel the need to defend the word RECOVERY. I know that it is a word that many of us feel a little skidish about. Who wants to be seen in need of a recovery group. Let me tell you how I see it. We Christians and non-Christians alike are all in need of recovery. We use 12 steps in our recovery group but there is really only one step, the step toward Jesus Christ. A step toward wholeness. Then after that one step we need to learn to walk in step with him. That is what our recovery group is all about. People that realize that we haven't done very well on our own. That we need someone greater than ourselves to restore us to sanity. Even folks that have been Christians for a long time can struggle in one area or many. If you struggle in an area of life that you can't get under control come and join us strugglers, as we learn from and lean on each other much can be accomplished.

Ecclesiastes 4:12 Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken.

We have been working on our identity in Christ Jesus. Us folks that have had a lot of sin in our lives have a tenancy to view ourselves in a negative way, a lowly sinner. That is a hard habit to break. The truth is that if we truly give ourselves over to Jesus, we are declared a child of God. Then, on top of that He says we are a temple that houses his Holy Spirit. He sets us apart as his own. WOW, WHAT A DIFFERENCE. We need to believe God for what he calls us rather than what we think of ourselves. He gives us new life.
