We are a month away from the start of the Fall 2021 semester, which means it’s time to start thinking about Fall Ensemble Auditions!

Our bands, choirs, and orchestra are open to *all* GVSU students with a placement audition.

In nine days we hit the road to premiere six commissioned works in six national parks. This amazing group of composers wrote some very special music inspired by these beautiful spaces: Zoe Keating (Acadia National Park),Marc Mellits (Indiana Dunes National Park), Shara Nova (My Brightest Diamond) (Great Smokey Mountain National Park), Paola Prestini (Cuyahoga Valley National Park), Pascal Le Boeuf (Shenandoah National Park), and Eve Beglarian (Mammoth Cave National Park). Full performance schedule coming soon!

Heavy preparations underway for our fourth national parks tour, now only three weeks away! We'll be traveling 3,000+ miles to six parks, and performing six world premieres along the way. Not a bad way to launch our first public performances in over eighteen months!

Congratulations to this year's Betty Van Andel Scholarship Recipient, Paige Gadbois.

Paige, a recent Vocal Performance graduate from Grand Valley State University, was presented with the scholarship at Opera Grand Rapids' 2021 Gala en Rouge, which was held Downtown on Monroe Center.

This fall, she will be attending University of Michigan to pursue a Master of Music in Vocal Performance.

This Sunday at 4 PM EST, MTD Visiting Professor Abigail Walsh is performing in a virtual concert for the Composers Alliance of San Antonio (CASA).

“Rites of Spring" is a concert of new music for flute and piano performed by Dr. Walsh and pianist Pei-I Wang (pictured here), who together form the Music Wall Duo.

The concert is free and will be streamed on CASA's Youtube page.

Congrats to all of our MTD Lakers for making it to the last week of the semester!

This week we will be holding culminating events across our department.

First up is the final Combined Music Ensemble Concert of the year, featuring Concert Band, Chamber Winds, Wind Ensemble, Anima Vocal Ensemble, Varsity Glee Club, University Arts Chorale, Chamber Strings, and Symphony Orchestra Strings.

Please join us in congratulating MTD student Isabella (Bella) Purosky, who is the undergraduate recipient of this year's Glenn A. Niemeyer Award.

This award is given each year to the one GVSU undergraduate student who best meets the criteria to “strive for excellence in all aspects of a well-rounded academic experience.”

Bella is pursuing a dual degree at Grand Valley: a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry, and a Bachelor of Arts in Music. Bella is a Bassoonist studying with Professor Victoria Olson.

Congratulations Bella!

Originally produced by the Gerald R. Ford Presidential Foundation, the play focuses on the relationship between a young Gerald Ford and his teammate on the University of Michigan football team, Willis Ward.

Earlier this month, our Dance Program hosted two guest artists who worked with our students virtually.

Our first guest was Queala Clancy, who serves as an educator, performer, choreographer, assistant, and artistic director of The Dance Narrative Project. Currently, she is a lecturer at California State University, Long Beach.

Our second guest was Yosh*to Sakuraba, who is the founding director of @abarukas_dance and is an award-winning choreographer. His work has been seen in Germany, Poland, Italy, Spain, Israel, Mexico, and the United States.

Are you interested in learning more about Theatre at GVSU? Attend our Virtual Theatre Day on February 13 from 1-4 PM!

During the event, students will meet with faculty, take part in fun exercises, get a quick look at how we have adapted during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as get a chance to talk to a panel of students. Incoming students also have the chance to interview for scholarships.

This event is free and open to all high school students, potential transfer students, and current GVSU students looking to get involved.

Actor training in physical movement and stage combat is now available in Western Michigan! Check out our first term! The Academy of Combat and Movement Education Presents: Unarmed Stage Combat Classes This curriculum will enable students to develop and improve a variety of skills essential to performing safe and dramatically effective techniques of unarmed staged violence used in theatre, film and television. As a specialized form of actor/movement work, this workshop will help to further develop body and spatial awareness, breath and vocal production, centering, concentration, focus, timing, action, and counter-action. Students partaking in the classes will have the opportunity to test with the Society of American Fight Directors, one of the oldest and most widely recognized stage combat organizations in the world. The test fee is not included in the course price. DATES: Sept 5 – Nov 10, 2017 TIMES: Tuesdays and Fridays, 7-9pm PLACE: The Center 274 Ottowa Street Coopersville, MI 49404 INSTRUCTOR: Steven M. Schwall, Fight Choreographer Steven Schwall has been staging fights professionally since 2006. He is aCertified Teacher of Stage Combat with the Society of American Fight Directors. In addition, he is a Level 1 professor of the Margolis Method of Dynamic Movement. He is also a practitioner of Historic European Martial Arts (HEMA), and Ko-Ryu Kabudo (Okinawan weapons).
