Some socially-distanced smiles for your feed! 😍

Concluding 4 weeks of online workshop training, Broadway performers Joe Carroll (Hans in FROZEN) and Alex Finke (Janice in COME FROM AWAY), traveled to Grand Rapids for an in-person Master Class and mock auditions with some of our Voice students and alumni (with all the necessary safety precautions!)

This was made possible through the generosity of the Linn Maxwell Keller Professional Vocalist Endowment.

This week's #tbt is from 2013's Opera Theatre Production of Three Penny Opera.

Based on John Gay’s 18th Century Beggar’s Opera, Kurt Weill’s Three Penny Opera premiered in August 1928 in Berlin during the rise of fascism. Subsequent English language versions were performed shortly thereafter in England and the US. The famous off-Broadway production of 1956, featuring Kurt Weill’s wife, Lotte Lenya (Tony Award), ran for 7,707 performance.

GVSU's production was directed by famed opera stage director Dorothy (Dottie) Danner.

The Naughty Boy (Fall 2019)

For this week's TBT, we are looking at our most recent collaboration with the Grand Rapids Ballet!

GVSU Opera Theatre in collaboration with the Grand Rapids Ballet School Junior Company produced The Naughty Boy (Ravel’s L’enfant et les sortileges) in GRB’s Peter Martin Wege Theatre October 2019. It’s a story about a young boy who throws a fit because he doesn’t want to do his homework. In the process he trashes his room. After he exhausts himself, all the things he’s hurt and the fears he has come to life in his imagination. In this little clip Mr. Arithmetic spouts numbers that make no sense.

Stage direction by Dale Schriemer and Choreography by Attila Mosolygo.

For our next #tbt, we are featuring photos from our 2015 production of Dido and Aeneas by Purcell, which was directed by our Artistic Director, Dale Schriemer.

Presented in collaboration with the Grand Rapids Ballet School Junior Company, the Grand Rapids Circus, the Chamber Choir of Grand Rapids, and the Early Music Ensemble at the Peter Martin Wege Theatre of the Grand Rapids Ballet.

From Greek mythology, the story of Dido Queen of Carthage and Aeneas are lovers torn apart by Jupiter who sent a messenger summoning Aeneas to Troy. After his departure, Dido, unable to cope with her loss, dies of grief.

This summer, we will be sharing clips and photos from past Opera Theatre productions!

For our first #throwbackthursday, here is a video from our
production of Masquerade from November 2018. This performance happened at the Peter Martin Wege Theatre in conjunction with the GVSU Early Music Ensemble, the Grand Rapids Ballet School Junior Company, and GVSU Department of Visual and Media Arts.

In this clip, dancers from the Grand Rapids Ballet School Junior Company and Rusty Gallas, counter tenor, perform an excerpt from Henry Purcell’s "Cold Song." Students from the Department of Visual and Media Arts created the projections.
