Dolly the mule has not been ridden for over three years so Keith (Butterfield's mule whisperer) decided today was the day. After a week or so of settling her, he tacked her up and "eased" on and here's the video..

Stoney Creek Bridge gets an overhaul. The pilings and trestles are strong and stable. We will replace Forty seven feet of decking and make it twelve feet wide, enough for horse or mule drawn carriages.

Our Savannah River swamp is laced with networks of boardwalks that allow visitors to walk out over the swamp despite the usual 6 to 10 feet of water beneath. The three month summer drought drained the swamp so visitors can now explore amongst the colossal cypress trees. With cooler weather and still dry conditions, we will reconstruct and brace the walkways before the swamp fills again. Note the high water marks on the cypress trunks.

Butterfield has miles of horse, carriage and jeep trails and more miles of hiking and biking paths. Our engineer inspected the several bridges on the property and was alarmed by one of them; besides the obvious tilt and accumulated debris, compost and dirt weighing down the deck, the structural elements were rotted through and the semi-standing bridge defied gravity ...we immediately closed the bridge, dismantled and replaced the deck and rail elements, reinforced the pilings and cleared the stream bed of fallen logs. Soon our bridge will safely carry jeeps and carriages, bikers and hikers, and John and Peanut, Butterfield's mule team.

Sale day has come and gone. Yes, it was hot but on the bright side: no rain, good group of buyers who took home good stuff at good prices. There were two simultaneous auctions: one crowd bought furniture, lamps and glassware, and the other crowd bought tractors, trucks, farm equipment that either duplicated what we have or was unnecessary for our operation. Thanks to Cogburn Auction and the staff for a well run auction and the to Allendale Masonic Lodge for spectacular food. Now back to work on the house and the property.

The day after our real estate closing the great Butterfield cleanup was underway. Overgrown shrubs, lanky privet hedge, leaning or diseased trees all fell to the blade of the chainsaw, dozer or the excavator.

The vintage (1946) American Equipment Manufacturing Co. Model 8 motor grader was rescued from the woods. The carburetor was reworked, hydraulic hoses replaced; the beast is ready for work. It will be crucial for repair and maintenance of the 17+ miles of roads and trails for hiking, biking, carriage riding, fox hunting, trail rides, nature walks, access to turkey, quail, deer, dove, and c***s and hogs.

In an effort to maintain a 1929 feel to the house, we are keeping only period furniture and furnishings so, this weekend at Butterfield, there is a major sale. Look over the listings:

and take home a piece of Butterfield.

About 50 trees overhanging the main house, guest house and barns are gone. Now there are views from the main house and guest house. Air can stir and hopefully the bugs and snakes will find new homes well away from our facilities.

Return to Butterfield

Butterfield Plantation, a premier hunting venue in Allendale SC, is undergoing restoration and renovation as an event center as well, for low country weddings, corporate, family and alumni meetings, fox hunting, carriage driving, trail bike riding, bird watching, hiking and nature walking s***t shooting, fishing and more. The property was assembled and the plantation home built between 1927 and 1929. The owner and his family spent winters at Butterfield for nearly three decades when the plantation was sold to Continental Can Company as an executive retreat. The property passed to the hands of Atlanta investors and then, in 1990, to a South Carolina developer who owned it until 2019 when the owner/builder’s great-grandson purchased the property.
