CHRISTMAS EVE LAST NIGHT OF ALLENTOWN’S LIGHTS IN THE PARKWAY

The city of Allentown’s Lights in the Parkway display will close for the season on December 24 two nights ahead of schedule.

Department of Community & Economic Development Director Leonard Lightner says Lights in the Parkway is a victim of its own success.

“We anticipated higher attendance due to the gathering restrictions resulting from the COVID-19 pandemic, but the weekend numbers have proven to be more than we can accommodate,” Lightner said. “Even with putting a new traffic pattern in place this season, additional signage, cones, an extra lane, pre-purchase tickets to expedite entrance, more volunteer participation and additional support from fire police, we have become overwhelmed.”

More than 15,000 vehicles have entered Lights in the Parkway so far this season even with three nights lost to inclement weather. There are approximately 5,000 tickets outstanding.

Lights in the Parkway opened the night after Thanksgiving and unlike other years it has stayed open seven days a week instead of five in anticipation of higher attendance.

Persons who may find themselves unable to use their tickets are asked to email their questions, concerns, and or feedback to [email protected]. Due to the volume of inquiries there may be a delay in receiving a response.

Lightner said, “We will start in January to look at what changes we can make to improve the visitor experience next season. Lights in the Parkway is a 24-year-old tradition that sparks nostalgia. It is a labor of love for our park workers who put up the displays and for our staff workers and volunteers.

12/21/2020

🗓 Lights in the Parkway season will end 12/24, 10:00pm.
🎫 Tickets are sold out online, all tickets will be honored until season end.
⏰ ‼️Please be prepared for longer wait times and lines this season.
❓Please email [email protected] if you have questions.
❄️ If you do not have a ticket and want to see the lights, we will assist on site. Please be advised of the waits and arrive with a phone and credit/debit card, we can not accept cash.

12/20/2020

📌 We apologize for the miscommunication to those families that were turned away last night visiting Lights in the Parkway. Your tickets are still good through December 24, 2020. Our event policy is and will remain if you are in line before 10:00 p.m., you will be accommodated.

At this time the event has been sold out. Here are our recommendations if you still want to attend Lights in the Parkway without a pre-purchased ticket.
1.) Understand the waits can be over three hours
2.) You must have access to a smart device and able to purchase your ticket while in line with a credit/debit card.
3.) We recommend you come during the week, please be advised we are open this weekend, we ask that your prepared for the wait and lines.
4.) There are only 4 days left to see the lights, as our season will now be ending on 12/24/2020.

If you are okay with these recommendations, we welcome you to join us at 2020 Lights in the Parkway.

✒️IMPORTANT MESSAGE FROM THE DESK OF LEONARD LIGHTNER, Director of CED/ Deputy Mayor.
There has been Facebook communication, and we have received emails and phone calls about the Lights in the Parkway (LIP) traffic control. This has been an exciting and challenging year for LIP. We did anticipate increased numbers, but not at the levels we are seeing. We prepared the traffic pattern in place, and the additional signs, cones, extra lane, pre-purchase tickets to expedite entrance, and other personnel support. However, it has exceeded our expectations.

Please let us put this in perspective we have had 15,605 cars come through LIP since November 27, 2020, minus three days we shut down for flooding and unsafe road conditions. Thus, allowing us to provide funds to many nonprofits in our local community. Out of the 15,605 vehicles that have come through, we are aware of the complaints and our team is working hard to address those concerns. We have provided FAQs on our site and posted several times on the website and social media that Saturday nights are hectic and, if possible, come during the week.

LIP is one of the only safe family friendly events our community can take advantage of during this pandemic when everything else is being shut down. We have had all patrons that have traveled to visit Lights in the Parkway in our thoughts and planning during the entire season thus far. This event provides hope, puts smiles on people's faces, provides remembrance to loved ones who have passed away, and provides life to couples who have come to LIP for a marriage proposal or anniversary celebration. I have seen people dressed up in holiday attire listening to Christmas music, families bonding when most have not had the time to spend ten minutes together Pre-COVID. To top it off, I dealt with an elderly lady who could barely see, but her husband brought her out to see the lights and the lady on oxygen who did not know if she would make it to the end of the year.

LIP is more than some Lights on a tree and displays. It is a 24-year-old tradition that sparks nostalgia; it is a passion our park workers put into placing these displays. It is long days and cold nights for our staff workers and volunteers. It is more than an inconvenience. After all, this season is about giving, Hope, Faith, Joy, and Peace. Let us remember this and work as a community and a team to provide Hope, Faith, Joy, and Peace.

Your experience is important to us, please email your questions, concerns, and or feedback to [email protected], due to the volume of inquires there may be a delay in response. Trust your feedback is valuable to us and we will continue to communicate for the remainder of the season. Event is sold out, please stay tuned for additional messaging on our page in regards.

Lights in the Parkway is a great opportunity to create family traditions and memories. Like riding through the lights with the grinch, top down and hot cocoa, or a roof top full of lights (with mom and dad in the car in front)!
