As you may be aware the US27 Motor Tour is a little different this year. The tour is still scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2020 to come through our area, but due the restrictions on gathers, the tour will be “self-guided” or some may call it a “virtual” tour. Superior Street will not be closed to park the vehicles. Each participate will be given a map of the route by the organizer. We are providing a map of our downtown district, and the route to and from Masonic Pathways. With the restrictions on adult care facilities we are asking the tour participants to make a lap or two around the Masonic, so the residents get a chance to see some of the vehicles.

Superior Street will not be closed to park tour vehicles in downtown from 1 – 3 pm as is the tradition. The participates will be on their own as they may their way to Clare, they will be parking on street or in the parking lots throughout the day on August 20th. If you have any questions about the tour please give me a call. You can also like “Michigan Old US27 Motor Tour” of more information.

The US127 Motor Tour is a little different this year. The tour is still scheduled for Thursday, August 20, 2020 to come through our area, but due the restrictions on gatherings, the tour will be “self-guided”. Each participate will be given a map of the route, and each community will provide a map of their community businesses. So instead of all 200 plus vehicles being parked on Superior Street in downtown from 1 – 3 pm, the participates will be here at random times and parking on street or the parking lots throughout the day on August 20th, as they make their way to Clare. If you have any questions about the tour please give Aeric Ripley a call at City Hall. If there is something extra you would like add for your business that day, for example, 10% off today only for tour participates, please email him those details.

Good Afternoon Everyone,

The State of Michigan is providing the two programs to potentially provide some assistance to small business. The Match on Main program is specific to the Downtown Development District. The MI Local Biz program is open to all small businesses. There is a very tight window for each of the programs. Please read through each program’s guidelines. I have provided my office and cell phone number, I will do what I can to assist.

The Match program will run through the City of Alma DDA. If you would like to apply and are within the Alma DDA District please follow the link below and download the Local Business Worksheet Packet on the Alma DDA website. Once the Business Worksheets are in hand the DDA will need to review and make recommendations for the application to be sent to the State of Michigan.

The MI Local Biz program is completely up to the business to apply through the Patronicity website. Businesses may begin to apply for this program on Monday, May 18, 2020 and it is first come for serve basis.

Local Business Worksheet and other information follow this link: https://myalma.org/downtown-development-authority.php

This year the Come Home to Alma for the Holudays wanted to do something special for Santa to Thank him for all his years of visiting our event during his busy season. We asked Hillcrest, Luce, Pine and St. Mary's School and 2 local daycares children to write him Thank You letters to Santa. The picture is just a small sample of the wonderful cards and letters we recieved. THANK YOU TO ALL WHO HELPED US OUT. This week we learned that the teachers loved the idea. They used it as an opportunity for a unique writing assignment, as a chance to give back and give to others, and 1 teacher even made copies of his students letters and emailed the students parents his students Christmas list so they had a wish list to shop from. We also have heard that Santa loved all of the cards and letters. SO THANK YOU ONCE AGAIN TO EVERYONE WHO MADE THIS SPECIAL GIFT HAPPEN FOR A VERY SPECIAL MAN. Merry Christmas from the Come Home to Alma for the Holidays Committee

Gratiot County Toys for Tots

Thank you John and Dawn for all your hard work helping families have a better Christmas

As I’m getting ready to pick up the few remaining collection boxes, I would like to share a couple highlights of this year’s campaign. There is the local business that donated $5000, or the store that gave $3000 in gift cards, or the insurance agent that OVERmatched the toys in the collection box in his office. There are the out of state construction workers who filled at least 12 boxes on their own. There are the two middle schools who filled 4 boxes each. I could go on and on but the collection that meant so much to me this year was Pine Avenue School in Alma. I was asked to give each class a presentation on what Toys for Tots is. The kids ended up with almost three boxes of toys and a container of change totaling $11. The breakdown was $5.25 in quarters, $1.75 in nickels and dimes and $4.00 in pennies. As my wife and I were counting those pennies, we were also counting the blessings of our community because those who need our help the most gave the most because they gave all they could. Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for your support. Every child deserves a little Christmas.
