Did you see..

If you were out and about downtown Alton this morning, you may have seen some work being done on The Grand Theatre.

We are doing asbestos abatement to prepare the facility for future construction and design. The Grand is like most other buildings that were built 100 years ago when asbestos was a popular construction material.

Keeping our properties safe is an important part of living in a healthy community. That means investing in proper clean up, roof repair and other activities that support and maintain structural integrity for the benefit of all.

Join AltonWorks for a Grand New Year’s Eve Speakeasy Party!

No need to whisper the secret word to get into this New Year’s Eve party! To join in on the fun, you only need to buy a ticket and be 21 (years of age that is.) This is the second year the Grand Theatre will serve as a New Year’s Eve venue for the people of Alton.

AltonWorks is hosting a “Roaring into the 20’s” New Year’s Eve Party. Since the Grand Theatre first opened its doors in December 1920, it’s only fitting to go back in time and celebrate the glory days of the past and toast the exciting future ahead for the theatre and for downtown Alton.

“Last year’s party was a huge success,” said AltonWork’s Nick Schranck. “There is so much to celebrate in Alton right now, and the energy around our city’s future is contagious. We welcome people from 21 years of age to 100 to come celebrate the new year with us.”

The doors will open at 9:00pm. Tickets are $35 each until 3:00pm and $40.00 at the door, which include appetizers from Brown Bag Bistro, live music, champagne toast at midnight, popcorn, and party favors. There will also be a cash bar. Festivities will conclude at 1:00am. Last year’s party was a sold out event. Proceeds will benefit local charities. Tickets can be purchased on the @AltonGrandTheatre page and the Alton Visitors Center, 200 Piasa St., Alton, IL.

The Grand Theatre opened in December 1920 during Prohibition, which from 1920 to 1933 made purchasing and consuming alcohol illegal. So people who wanted to sip on a cocktail or two at a public establishment had to enter hidden, private, and unlicensed barrooms nicknamed “speakeasies,” which required patrons to quietly speak the “password” to gain entry so as not be overheard by police. These party places illegally sold alcoholic beverages and ranged from fancy clubs with ballroom dancing and live entertainment to dark, dingy backrooms.

Although there is nothing illegal or illicit about this party, we do encourage people to dress the part and dance to the live music by the FarGone Brothers. The band’s eclectic musical offerings span the decades from the 1920’s through the 1980’s.

Any updates on renovations for our beloved Grand Theater?❤️
I was hoping to speak with someone about booking a stand-up comedy show sometime. I headline all over the Midwest and South but happen to live right here in southeast Missouri. So if you're interested in some alternative, cheap entertainment guaranteed to keep patrons buying drinks and food, I'd love to work out the details with you. Basically, if you've ever had enough room for karaoke, a live DJ, or even trivia night- you have enough room for stand-up comedy. I also have promotional material ready, with all of your information ready to insert whenever it's worked out. Looking forward to hearing back from you. To see all my upcoming dates, go to Richard Cason
An amazing even tonight. Best New Years Eve I've had in years and one I will not forget. THANK YOU Jim for the party and saving our Grand Theater. Can't wait to see what you do next
Thank you for making a dream come true. I've wanted to see the inside for so very long.
My husband, Bruce, worked there from 1968-1976, around school dates and we can't wait to come back and see the building. Bruce has great memories from there as he did every job at some point unless Mr. Culp did it. He even learned how to be a projectionist there. I'm excited because I've never been there before although Bruce has talked about it and researched it for years. This is going to be wonderful and we wish the Simmons' all the good fortune possible in the rehab project.
