Globe-News Center Orchestra Shell

In this week’s video, we want to highlight the orchestra shell at the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts.

A first of its kind, three dimensional, reflective enclosure is capable of transforming the auditorium from a concert hall into a dramatic theater with the aid of a moveable orchestra shell and a 50 ton crane. Suspended from an overhead traveling bridge crane, and never touching the floor. The shell is constructed of oriented strand board panels that exactly match the interior of the hall. Each individual panel, as well as the overall shape of the shell, was specifically designed to correctly reflect the sound waves produced by the symphony orchestra. If you’ve never been to the Globe-News Center before, check out the Amarillo Symphony’s next season’s concerts. You will be amazed!

The Amarillo Symphony

In light of the City of Amarillo, Texas's temporary closure of the Globe-News Center for the Performing Arts, and the current shelter-in-place mandate by local officials, the Amarillo Symphony is forced to cancel its April 24 & 25 performances of Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto. We consider the health and well-being of the audience, staff, and musicians a top priority, and we want to do our best to honor the recommended guidance from our public health experts regarding the status of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Music Director and Conductor Jacomo Bairos said, “It is with a heavy heart that we must cancel the April concert. While we are certainly disappointed, our number one priority is the health and safety of our community. Thank you for all your understanding and unyielding support. We are here for you, and we cannot wait to return to the hall and make glorious music together.”

We commit to continue bringing you music where ever you may be through social media. Make sure you have “liked” and "followed" our page so that you can listen along with your community!
