Our judges have been hard at work judging designer entries digitally! Entries will be displayed and category winners will be announced through the AESHM Department website on May 6th. ✨ We’d like to introduce you to our fourth and final judge, Erin Pepe! Erin graduated from Iowa State in 2004 and is currently the Senior Vice President of Digital and Marketing at Zadig and Voltaire.

We asked Erin: What advice do you have for students that are hoping to pursue a career in Merchandising?
"Retail math and excel are very important and an absolute must, you'll use both more than you can ever imagine. But you either have it or you don't. You either understand your product or "get it" or you don't. Having that instinct and understanding of what the customer wants to actually buy and how they actually want to see it doesn't just come to everyone. It's very easy to get swept up in the creative and emotional brand story each season and get excited about the line. It's hard to separate yourself from that, but a good merchant has to put on their consumer hat and be realistic about what from that runway the people will actually buy into in a meaningful way and what is just good for editorial and sprinkle in. They're rarely the same things, and finding the right balance in your end selection is a hard balancing act.” #TFS2020

We might not be able to move forward with a runway show this year, but we are excited to share that designer entries will still be judged digitally! Say hello to our third judge, Chris Dove! Chris graduated from Iowa State in 2013 and is currently the Senior Product Designer over Universal Thread & Wild Fable accessories at Target Corporation.

We asked Chris: What does your day as a Senior Designer at Target look like?
“Each and every day is different. One day I might be working on sketches and concept development for the next season, collaborating with my buyer on assortment strategy, or communicating with vendors on how to best execute the design in the most cost effective way. I’m always juggling at least two seasons at the same time across multiple brands and product categories.”

Tune in tonight at 4pm on our Facebook live to meet Chris and the rest of our judges virtually! #TFS 🙌🏼

Our next senior designer spotlight is @a_creags ✨ Here’s a little bit about why she designs & her inspiration towards her senior collection— “I love design, because I love the process. I love getting inspired by something, wether its nature, a sound, art or anything, and then figuring out how to make it into something beautiful. From researching trends, to picking out fabric, to the draping the actual garment and then seeing it all come together at the end. It’s so humbling and rewarding to be able to step back and look at what you have made and know that it’s something that came entirely from you. My senior line is a resort wear collection entitled “A Getaway”. It was inspired by natural textiles, and all of the burlap was 100% recycled burlap from old coffee bags.” 🤍 #TFS2020 #HumansofTFS

Our next senior designer spotlight goes to one of #TFS2020 design directors— @cassyeaton 🤍 Here’s a little bit about why she designs and what her senior collection means to her: "Growing up in an artistic household, my creativity was always encouraged. This allowed me to develop a signature style centered around femininity, handcrafting and sustainable design. My senior collection, HEIMAT, which means 'the place you feel most at home' in German, is an homage to my German heritage. The HEIMAT collection is inspired by nature and the idea of timelessness. Using vintage yet classic silhouettes and high quality materials, we are insuring a lifetime of wear for these garments. All colors used can be found in nature and are created through the use of natural and plant dyes that are as earth friendly as they are beautiful. Sustainability is embraced through the selection of the organic, deadstock, and recycled fabrics that make up this charming collection. HEIMAT creates the perfect harmony between handcrafting, femininity, and the feeling of being home." ✨

@justbeebybex is our designer spotlight of the week ✨ “I believe that everyone has their own story, their own path and a truly unique code within their insides that makes them their own form of superhero.” More about her line—“On the Inside shows six different mental illness including: Anxiety, Depression, Bi-Polar, Eating Nervosa, Addiction, and Psychosis. The last ensemble represents a cure: love, because in order to love yourself you have to learn to love your illness (a.k.a. superpower). The ultimate goal of the collection is to encourage the dark days so many of us have and remind whoever they are, that they are not alone.” We can’t wait to see your work on the runway!

There are four weeks until our Guest Judges join us on campus to speak to classes, attend our Meet the Judges event, and of course judge student submissions for #TFS2020! Before they arrive, we want to introduce you to our Guest Judging Panel for The Fashion Show 2020! Anya Caboth is our first guest judge. She is currently a Technical Developer at Nike and graduated from Iowa State in 2009.

How did you get to where you are today? What is your advice for students who want to work for Nike? “I got where I am today by cultivating professional connections, working really hard, and keeping a positive attitude. The first few years of my career I did everything that was asked of me and did so without complaints. I entered the workforce during the recession when there weren’t a lot of jobs. Paying attention to details, being dependable, asking good questions, and working independently are easy ways to show you that you’re worth investing time into. If you want to work at Nike, I can recommend the following: Make yourself accessible online. Keep your LinkedIn current, clean, and open to opportunities. Recruiters are amazing resources; make sure they can find you. Designers: Your sketchbooks and portfolios are everything. Show all the facets of your skillset and work to be a fantastic storyteller both verbally and visually. Developers & Merchandisers: Get corporate experience. Nike is a massive company and showing that you can quickly integrate puts you a step ahead. Systems are a big part of large companies so get as much exposure to them that you can.”

What does a typical day look like for you as a Technical Developer at Nike? What is the best part of your job? “A typical day at Nike is full of challenges and creative problem solving. Most days start troubleshooting issues and concerns with our Asia based offices and vendors. These range from pattern and grading questions to data updates in our PLM system. Afternoons are for team meetings, fittings, costing and margin discussions, fit comments, and projects. The best part of my job is that it is hands-on and each day is different.” ✨

Our next Senior Designer Spotlight is one of our very own #TFS2020 Producer @erin_dhillon! ✨ When she described her senior collection— “For my senior collection I wanted to blend my passion for the outdoors with my love of design. The functionality needed for a hike juxtaposed against the streetwear trends of NYC culminated in a collection that is ready for any adventure. TREK adapts to the needs of the people destined for the road.” We can’t wait to see her collection take the stage! 🤩 #TFS2020 #HumansofTFS

Check out our designer of the week @ryliechristina ⚡️You’ll see her design, Rooted in #TFS2020! “I have wanted to design since I was young. I was always infatuated with the idea that fashion was a language and it could say more than words ever could. My collection ROOTED is an ode to my experience with childhood Leukemia. Through the use macrame techniques and a custom digitally printed roots, ROOTED inspires to appreciate your own roots, because strong roots cannot be shaken.” — Rylie Smith
