December 1, 2020- Monroe County including the City of Amory is under a mask mandate per the Governor of the State of Mississippi. We will post the Executive Order as soon as it is posted.

JACKSON, Miss. (WLBT) - Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves is giving a COVID-19 update as cases continue to surge in the state.

“It’s bad everywhere, and it’s certainly bad here,” Reeves said.

Monday, State Health Officer Dr. Thomas Dobbs said hospitalizations are at a record high, above the previous peak in August, and expected to continue rising.

“It’s appalling that this seems like a low number,” Dobbs said of the more than 1,000 new cases reported by the health department on Tuesday.

Reeves says everyone knows what works to prevent the spread: wearing a mask and avoiding large groups.

He says he’s always been measured in his response and has worked to avoid panic, but needs the trust of the public.

Reeves is adding 13 counties to the mask mandate, increasing the total to 54--m ore than half of the state’s counties.

The new additions are: Quitman, Jefferson, Franklin, Noxubee, Kemper, Amite, Coahoma, Sunflower, Scott, Adams, Oktibbeha, Monroe and Washington.

The other counties that were previously added include:

Alcorn, Attala, Bolivar, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Jefferson Davis, Jones, Lafayette, Lawrence, Lincoln, Lowndes, Neshoba, Panola, Perry, Prentiss, Stone, Tippah, Tishomingo, Union, Benton, Carroll, Covington, DeSoto, Forrest, Harrison, Hinds, Humphreys, Jackson, Lamar, Lauderdale, Leflore, Lee, Madison, Marshall, Montgomery, Pontotoc, Rankin, Tate, Winston, Itawamba, and Yalobusha.

Dobbs noted one worrying trend in the state: young, asymptomatic people who are spreading the virus to their parents and grandparents.

He called for an end to all non-essential gatherings.

Tate Reeves

I have had to sign more executive orders in the past 7 months than I thought I would during my entire time as Governor. 59 so far!

As we've worked to respond quickly to mitigate the impact of the pandemic, I know all of these orders have left many confused on where they stand. There's times when even my team and I have had difficulty keeping track.

We have put together a cheat sheet to help you navigate what the current executive orders mean for you. Also available for download here➡️https://bit.ly/2D6e3Sf

Covid-19 | Office of Governor Tate Reeves

JACKSON — Today, Governor Tate Reeves announced his amended Safe Return order, establishing additional measures on social gatherings and events to protect public health as COVID-19 cases rise across the state.

Closely monitoring data from the Mississippi State Department of Health and consulting with our state health experts, Governor Reeves signed a new executive order that amends previous restrictions on group gatherings and bars. The amended Safe Return order is in effect until 8:00 AM on Monday, August 3.

"We are still in the middle of our most painful period of COVID-19 spread to date. We have to slow the spread to prevent our health care system from becoming overwhelmed," said Governor Tate Reeves at today's press briefing. "We’ve seen a tremendous amount of spread in young people. By far, the group driving these high numbers is people in their 20’s. I’ve been talking for about a week about wanting to do something to curb the spread among young, drunk, careless folks."

To limit transmission across the state, the new social distancing measures include:

• Social gatherings are limited to 10 or less indoors

and 20 or less outdoors.

**WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR AMORY?

This means that during Cruisin' the Loop this weekend our citizens and visitors need to remain in their vehicles and abide by the 20 or less in outdoor places.***

• Bars can only sell alcohol to seated customers, and no alcohol can be sold at restaurants or bars after 11:00 PM until 7:00 AM. Previous social distancing measures, such as limiting to 50% capacity, updating floor plans to ensure 6 feet distance between groups, and limiting to 6 people per table, remain in effect.

The Governor also announced that six additional counties were identified as hotspots within our state, adding the following counties to the county-specific executive order with tighter social distancing measures to help limit transmission: Calhoun, Holmes, Lamar, Montgomery, Winston, and Yalobusha Counties.

Governor Reeves issued another executive order today to continue easing the burdens weighing on the thousands of Mississippians unemployed due to the pandemic. With some unemployment benefits set to end on July 25, the Governor has extended the suspension of work search requirements until August 8 and other unemployment benefits listed in the executive order until September 26.

The Governor made the announcements at today's press briefing, which you can view on our page here.

You can view the text version of the new executive orders here: Executive Order No. 1510, Executive Order No. 1511, Executive Order No. 1512. Signed versions of all executive orders related to COVID-19 can be found on our website at governorreeves.ms.gov/covid-19.

From City Hall:
We have received a few questions regarding the Safer at Home Executive Order. A few of our most asked questions to the City of Amory and that we have noticed to the FB world are:

1) Is McAlpine Lake open?
Answer: No. It is not a State park/lake. The safety of our citizens and youth is very important to us. In the beginning of the last Executive Order, we opened the park. The quantity of adults fishing at the youth fishing lake far exceeded the youth and was deemed a danger to youth and our citizens due to the quantity of those at the lake.
As the Governor slowly turns on the dimmer switch back to normal for the State of Mississippi, we will revisit this. Keep an eye open on this page for updates. This is the official City of Amory page. It is where you will find the real answer.

2) Can I open my tanning salon?
Answer: No....for service. Yes....for retail sales. Explanation to follow- The Safer at Home order states that you can sell your products and items curbside, drop off, drive-thru, mail, etc. This means no physical contact. This applies to all service orientated businesses for people (personal grooming: hair salons, barber shops, nail salons, fitness and exercise gyms, dance studios, tattoo parlors, spas, etc.). All personal care and personal grooming facilities shall remain closed to the public but may continue Minimum Operations limited to retail sales as mentioned above (Section H - Paragraph ix - Safer at Home Order).

NOW - Do you also offer retail items for retail business sales?
Example - I having clothing sales within my business that is also a tanning salon. What do I do? See Safer at Home Order Section H - Paragraph iii. Retail business shall adopt reasonable measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19 by limiting the number of customers in their stores at one time to no greater than 50% of store capacity while ensuring compliance with social distancing protocols. You also must frequently clean all high-contact surfaces (counters, door handles, credit/debit card machines). Make hand sanitizer readily available in multiple locations in your business.

Explained - You can open your retail portion of your business, BUT YOU MAY NOT open your service (tanning salon) portion of your business.
People (at 50% capacity as deemed by Fire Code) can shop your retail business if you adhere to the guidelines above.

People may NOT attend your tanning beds in any way. That is a service a grooming service.

3) What if I see someone going into a salon/barber shop?
Answer: The owners of a salon/barber shop have the right to maintain their business by cleaning, doing paperwork, etc. They may be gathering retail items for pickup/drop off/delivery. They may NOT have clients for service within the building at this time.
They do have the right to clean, arrange, perform actions to prepare their shop for business as well as offer retail items for curbside. They also, however, must obey by social distancing rules.

4) What parks or ball fields are open?
Answer: Per the Governor's Executive Order - The Northeast MS Nature and Interpretive Trail is open. Please maintain social distancing when visiting. If you arrive and see 50 people there, wait.
All sport fields are closed to the public. If you are seen at the fields, the APD will ask you to leave.
