This weekend over 30 volunteers and MORE SME's braved the heat and the pandemic by showing up at Wakefield and Locust Shade (https://www.facebook.com/LocustShade) At Wakefield the crew mowed and trimmed and took care of a pesky water troubled spot. At Locust Shade they bucked and corridor cleared in anticipation of the next phase of trail building. Remember, all of this work is 100% volunteer labor or paid for by MORE.

We wanted to send out a HUGE, GIGANTIC Thank You to the 10 or so folks who volunteered in today's heat to help us mow, cut, trim and improve the Wakefield Trail system. The 10 (or so) volunteers plus the 5 Wakefield council of elders were able to knock out a huge amount of work even with the crazy heat and the threat of COVID-19. Couldn't make it today, send your LOVE in the form of a monetary donation by going here: https://more-mtb.org/collections/virginia-trails/products/wakefield-park

If you're out riding Wakefield this weekend think of the guys and gals from MORE who are keeping the trails from growing over. They give up rides, blood, sweat and probably some tears (Ouchies HURT!).

If you're out riding at Wakefield today or any time this beautiful weather weekend make note how good the Power Line trails look. This little fellow had a tough first day of service. One DR Mower, three Stihl Kombi's and four volunteers made for a HOT but effective Thursday evening! The DR is about to get a quick bath and a filter checking and cleaning. All of our gear was purchased using MORE club funds. Fuel was donated by the volunteers running the equipment. Your donations really do help.

The folks over at MORE have put in THREE good work days during the closures related to the Pandemic. Show your support by joining MORE and/or making a donation to the club and/or directly to the Wakefield trails. Although no race this year, the trails are looking GREAT and with one or two more trimming days they should get us through the summer and into the Fall.

COVID-19 Limited Work Day #3 - Teaming up with the Canadian Woodchucks to rebuild Phase 4 Bridge 1. We squeezed everything in just before it got dark.

A few of the many hardships associated with the COVID-19 pandemic is the inability to do any organized trail maintenance and sources of funding/donations have dried up. As many here know, at least $500 is donated to the Wakefield Trail fund from proceeds from the WAW and this year we were hoping for $1000. The trails are getting hammered with use, hard use and some may even say over use. The grass, weeds and multi-floral don’t care if there is a virus going around and with all of the recent rain has just grown and grown. Lucky for us the Park gave the MORE trail Liaisons and SME’s permission to go in and do some mowing and trimming. Instead of replying back here with a Big Thanks to the handful of volunteers who came out in the rain, please consider making a $10 or more donation to the Wakefield trail fund: https://more-mtb.org/collections/virginia-trails/products/wakefield-park

Weeeellllllllll - - We're starting to see some traffic on this page and the number of "LIKES" are trending up, so it's a good time to get some COVID-19/[email protected] news out. As it stands now, [email protected] 2020 is cancelled or at the very least postponed (but probably cancelled). Officially, Wakefield Park is closed and Virginia has a stay at home order. Technically the trails are open but you can't drive to the park to access them. New territory here, but this probably null and voids our permit if the closures were to last through June. At the very least, we can't get into the Park to properly do any trail maintenance or any serious planning. In reality, even if social distancing protocols were to relax, we're sure lining up shoulder to shoulder with 100 or so of your mountain bike brethren is not in the best interests of anyone. As world news has been changing day to day, please continue to follow this page for future announcements. Stay Safe and we will get through this!

SUPER FANTASTIC Trail day out at Wakefield Today. A big THANKS to the 30 plus people who made it out to help today. A special big THANKS to Brock Lowery and Ironwood Outdoors for giving up their Saturday to help us with the work.

Hope to see some (A lot?) of you all tomorrow!!

We had a really good day of Pre-Work Day Prep work. We knocked out most of the trimming and mowing, moved some stone and dug a few piles of dirt for the Berm Rehab.

10/16/2019

OK - Racers. Time for a little LOVE to be given back to Wakefield. Lets get a Berm or TWO looking like they were designed to be.

Who’s glad we started the race series a week early this year? Whew! 🌞🔥#dangitshot

We just got back from some Emergency Trail Maintenance on the course. For the most part, the race course looks really good. There was so much rain in a so short a period that many of the muddy areas just got washed clean. Add the fact that the Cinder trail that parallels the Stream Valley trail was under water and we haven't seen it that clean in several years. That being said; here are some things to look out for. The Start Hill has now developed what some would say is severe character. It definitely doesn't look like it did the first three weeks. The grasses/multi-flower/thorny stuff have grown at an exponential rate. The Berm Ascent hill looks pretty much like single track now. Lastly the BERMS took a beating. You have to ride them on the high side or be really REALLY careful.

WE'RE BACK! Don't let the rain get you down - race 4 is only two days away, with plenty of sunny skies to dry things out on Tuesday and a perfect forecast for Wednesday! This week's fourth and final race adds the popular ENDURANCE option at 6:15 - complete as many laps as you can until we get bored of drinking beer and heckling you! As always, walk up registration closes 15 minutes before the heat you want to participate in.

The Good News is that MOST of the race course is in good shape and will probably be dry for Wednesday. The bad news is that we "MAY" have to reroute around the Stream Valley Trail. This will be a game day decision and we won't make it before 3:00 PM on Wednesday. Please do not pre-ride the course today, tomorrow and maybe Wednesday morning. It needs some time to dry!!

We're just back from a RECON of the Wakefield Trails. Can you say "Cross County CREEK Trail"

It's one week until WAW #4 is scheduled to kick off. Many years ago, the rather large Single Speed class started showing up to the last race of the series in dresses. There was a short lived Masters attempt to show up in Ugly Hawaiian Shirts and recently the Women in all classes have banded together to try and support a common theme (Wonder Woman and RGP as examples). What's your Race Class going to do for this year? Dresses?? Swimwear?? Hawaiian Wear?? Clown Costumes?? Superhero Costumes?? Throw it out there and lets see if it STICKS!

@wednesdaysatwakefield Race #2 is a go! Looks like the weather may hold off! Some roots and bridges may be slick so you think about adjusting your tire pressure. We may have one course modification, but we will let you know about any adjustments at the start line. If the rain does arrive, we reserve the right to postpone the races. We want everyone to stay safe and not ruin the trails. See you soon!

25 Years of Grassroots Mountain Bike Racing!

📷 For over about fifteen years, the Potomac Velo Club (PVC) has been hosting the greatest mid-day race series on the East Coast. Called simply "Wednesdays at Wakefield" ([email protected]), this mountain bike event takes over the single-track of Wakefield Park on -- you guessed it-- each Wednesday evening. PVC took over the race series from CSG in 2004, and now it is time for another change.

New for 2019, The Bike Lane, in partnership with Potomac Velo Club, will take over Wednesdays at Wakefield! The Bike Lane, a locally owned bike shop in Springfield and Reston, has been the major sponsor of our grassroots race series since PVC took over the series. We are excited about this new partnership and know 2019 will be a race series to remember!

We've lost count of the years that this race series has been going on but for those of us who think we remember, we believe the series is about 25 years old. So this year, we are celebrating 25 years of grassroots racing!

Plan to get off of work a bit early and join over 200 riders for four spectacular weekdays of racing starting on June 12th. Pitched as a race "in your own backyard", [email protected] features a very down-home and earthy venue. We are keeping the series as grassroots as you can get. But don't let that fool you, The Bike Lane and PVC have done more racing in their 20+ year history then most of the Wednesday riders will do in a lifetime. And they show this through a simplified, yet highly organized event, that allows for enough riding categories to give everyone a fighting chance.

The PVC and Bike Lane Race Teams have come together to run a fun and community-oriented race series. We have an all-volunteer staff who works closely with our local IMBA club, Mid Atlantic Off Road Enthusiasts (MORE), to make sure we have fun singletrack to race, that is great for everyone from juniors to beginners to elite racers. We also partner with Trails for Youth, who run the Youth Races early in the evening. A portion of the proceeds from [email protected] goes to MORE and Trails for Youth.

Anyone snag a picture of the SS results yesterday?! Thanks! Here is mens Expert if your looking.
Do you have the course map or distance posted? I’m trying to figure out how I’m going to suffer through 3 laps instead of 2, unless you have decided to move the masters men 30-39 back down to a two lap race.
5:45 Jr’s race course looking good. One week out- wahoo.
Can someone drop me a Pm I’ve got a question!
Youth racer recomendations from coach Pat at Trailsforyouth.org. First time racers, race your age and have fun. Look for a pre-ride of the youth course before first race. If you raced NICA varsity or cometitive JV, think sports class. If you raced freshman or sophomore, think 15-18 category. Uber-competive experianced13 + racers likely will want to race 15-18 too. Bring water, have fun!
