Creative Dance for Children, started by Ramona Batchelder in 1983 developed into a nationwide dance movement program offered in child care centers in various regions. Ramona opened the first Creative Dance Center studio in 1986 in Chantilly as a home office for the outreach program.
The Creative Dance Center Competition Team consists of approximately 140 boys and girls ranging in age from 4 to 18. The dancers compete regionally and nationally in Lyrical, Jazz, Tap, and Contemporary categories. The Creative Dance Center Competition Team has earned esteemed accolades and national titles for their athleticism and artistry. In 2011 alone, these include: Top 10 Studios Nationwide by the Federation of Dance Competitions, 3rd Overall Teen Small Group and 3rd Overall Senior Large Group at the Federation of Dance Competitions' 2011 World Dance Championship Series in Dallas, Highest Scoring Studio at the 2011 Star Systems National Competition in Myrtle Beach, and 9th Overall Studio Nationwide by Star Systems National Competition’s 2011 Reveal.
Founded in 2008 at the Ashburn Creative Dance Center, CDC's Performing Troupe (CDC*PT) was designed as a dance training and performance program for dancers who enjoy performing locally at a variety of community events. It continues to thrive in its fourth year. Although performance requests and opportunities may vary each year, the CDC*PT Staff of eight professional instructors and choreographers currently produce dances for approximately eight annual performances each season. Recent performance venues have included Dulles Towne Center, Frederick Keys Baseball Games, YouthFest Brambleton, Grand Opening Ceremony of Bolen Park Leesburg, Brambleton Battle of the Bands, Leisure World Lansdowne, and Potomac Green by Del Webb.
CDC Stars was founded in 2010 and offers classes and co-ed competitive teams in jazz, hip hop, and pom. Past teams have obtained All Star Worlds Bids in both Senior Hip Hop and Senior Jazz every season since the Stars were founded.
And, of course, our studios have a host of Adult and Children's recreational dance, fitness, and theatrical classes that provide a fun and safe way to exercise and learn and meet new people.
The Chantilly studio has grown to 10,500 square feet, becoming Northern Virginia's largest professional dance instruction facility. With five spacious raised dance floors, the most recent production room, Studio 6, boasts 1,800 square feet of dance space. In 2002, the second location was built in old Ashburn. After four years the two room studio could no longer accommodate the growing enrollment. In 2006, a new state of the art Ashburn studio was built with viewing windows in each dance room and a designer birthday party room. In June 2012, CDC opened the new South Riding Studio with 4 studios and reoccupied the Old Ashburn location for a brand new Ashburn After School program with transportation from all Ashburn are public and private schools.
Though the facilities are certainly much to be proud of, it is the staff and programming that set Creative Dance Center apart. From the beginning, CDC hired teachers who specialize in each dance style and are placed in classes with the age range and level they are most able to teach effectively. Teachers have stayed at Creative Dance Center for many years because they enjoy the teaching environment.
