I know you are all eager to hear what’s happening with Auburn Days for 2016. When I made the difficult decision to pass the torch last year, I was comforted by the fact that the City of Auburn would take it on and continue the tradition of a summer festival for the Auburn that we all know and love. As you know, this has been a journey for 28 years and the opportunity of a lifetime. Hopefully you feel the same. You and this community have enriched my life in so many ways and for that I am so grateful.
Over the past month or so, I’ve been working to upload all the files, vendors, contacts, and more to the City of Auburn. They’ve been brainstorming to develop a festival that continues to serve the community and continues many of the fun traditions from the Auburn Days festival. They have been so kind and understanding of the impact this transition has on my heart and soul.
During our chats about transition, we discussed that people may be disappointed if things aren’t quite the same. When the City committed to taking the responsibility of the festival, they have had to make decisions that they feel will be in the best interests of the community and consider the logistics of the event.
The City has re-branded the festival with a new name - Auburn AugustFest. This will allow them to keep lots of the components from Auburn Days and grow and change with new festival elements. And, they feel it will help avoid (or at least decrease) the “but that’s not how it’s been done before!!!” comments that come along with change.
The other difference is that the main festival will be a one-day celebration held at Les Gove Park on Saturday, August 13 from 11am-8pm. With construction taking place downtown and the new Community and Events Center & Teen Center being added to Les Gove Park, they are going to see how it pans out for 2016 at the park location. I know the first year will be a learning curve for the City, but I’m excited to see how it all unfolds. They’ve shared with me that they are planning for two entertainment stages, a beer garden, food vendors, craft and specialty vendors, community and non-profit vendors; a zip line, inflatables, a rock-wall, a train, pony rides, mini golf, a mid-day car show (12noon-5pm), a literary showcase, and much more.
The City will continue the tradition of the Auburn Days Parade on Main Street in downtown Auburn (and maintain the Auburn Days Parade name for the Grand Parade portion of the event). However, the Parade will start at 11:00 a.m. instead of high noon. I am honored to have been asked to be the Grand Marshal of the Auburn Days Parade. The only way I will have fun with the honor is if you are all by my side. You are the reason that this festival happened. We have been the hub of the wagon wheel of our community with spokes that reached out to the circle that encompassed all factions of Auburn. ***Please join me for one last run down Main Street in your favorite festival shirt***
The City has had a Friday night event for years the same weekend as the festival. This year, they’ll add the 5K Fun Run to their evening Summer Sounds and Cinema event at Les Gove Park on Friday, August 12. The route will be really similar to the original Auburn Days Fun Run, which has always gone through Les Gove Park. Instead of starting and finishing at Auburn High School; they’ll start and finish at the park. They’ll also be adding a kids Loop de Loop component to the run to let the little ones run around the looped trail at Les Gove Park.
You have all given some much of your time and talent to Auburn Days and I’m so grateful for the years of support. I truly feel that the City wants to take good care of many of the elements that are at the heart of Auburn Days and continue the tradition of a fun, community, family festival that celebrates all the great things about Auburn!
You all know what it takes to put on a festival of this magnitude; and I know the City is looking for great volunteers. So, if you want to continue to help in some way, I know they’ll find a good fit for you. There will also be some opportunities for volunteering on some other projects in the future. Please forward this to others as some emails may have changed.
The former Auburn Days website has resolved to the new Auburn AugustFest website. For now, you can find a few some vendor forms at www.auburnwa.gov/augustfest. The Parade application and Car Show application will be posted soon. For additional information about the festival and plans for 2016, feel free to call Julie Krueger at 253-804-5042 or email [email protected]. I think you will find genuine, caring people that want to meet and work with you.
Warmest thoughts, love and appreciation,
Connie

Auburn Days Festival Director one last time

Auburn Days is one of the oldest festivals in Washington state.
It has been named Auburn Days, Good Ol' Days, Auburn Good Ol' Days then back to Auburn Days.
It has been my pleasure to serve the community for 28 years as Festival Director. So many wonderful people and factions of the community have inspired, supported & volunteered over the centuries.
To keep up with what's going on with Auburn Days, please go to the Auburn Days page and the website.

You will see the 2016 updates soon as we are in transition. The capable hands of the city staff and the continuing involvement of the volunteers will be carrying on the traditions.
Thank you all for the journey of a lifetime!
