Covid-19: Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine approved for use in UK

The Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine has been approved for use in the UK, with the first doses due to be given on Monday amid rising coronavirus cases.

The UK has ordered 100 million doses - enough to vaccinate 50 million people.

This would cover the entire population when combined with the full order of the Pfizer-BioNTech jab, Health Secretary Matt Hancock said.

It comes as millions more people in England are expected to be the toughest tier four restrictions.

The first doses are due to be given on Monday, amid concern over rising coronavirus cases.

Pierre Cardin: French fashion giant dies aged 98
Legendary designer Pierre Cardin, whose futuristic and stylish designs helped revolutionise fashion in the 1950s and 60s, has died at the age of 98.

The French fashion giant, whose career spanned more than 70 years, helped usher in the post-war "golden age" of couture with his modern style.

He broke ground by bringing designer styles to the masses with some of the first ready-to-wear collections.

Norway landslide: Houses buried in Gjerdrum village near Oslo

A landslide in a Norwegian village has injured 10 people, left 21 unaccounted for and buried houses under what looks like a huge slick of mud in a gully.

About 500 people have been evacuated from the village of Gjerdrum, which lies some 25km (15 miles) north-east of the capital, Oslo.

Coronavirus: Hundreds of British skiers flee Swiss Verbier quarantine

More than 200 British skiers fled a coronavirus quarantine in the popular Swiss resort of Verbier on Saturday night, reports say.

A spokesman in Valais canton said 420 British guests had booked into Verbier accommodation before Christmas and now only about a dozen were left.

Switzerland imposed a 10-day quarantine backdated to 14 December because of the new virus strain spreading in the UK.

The country also stopped flights from the UK and South Africa on 20 December.

Some Swiss hoteliers only discovered the guests had vanished when room service trays were left untouched outside doors, Swiss media reported. Others were called by British tourists demanding their money back once they had safely crossed into France, the BBC's Imogen Foulkes reports from Geneva.

Verbier is especially popular among the British, who normally make up about one-fifth of the resort's winter clientele.

More than 200 Britons flee Verbier, defying a Swiss order to remain in their hotels and chalets.

Coronavirus: More cases of new Covid variant found in Europe

Cases of the more contagious variant of Covid-19 identified in the UK have been confirmed in several other European countries as a vaccine is due to be rolled out across the continent.

Brexit: EU diplomats briefed on Brexit trade deal

EU ambassadors have received a Christmas Day briefing on the post-Brexit trade deal reached with the UK.

EU chief negotiator Michel Barnier updated them on the agreement, reached after months of fraught talks on fishing rights and business rules.

MPs will vote on the deal in Parliament on 30 December, with the UK set to exit existing trading rules on 31 December.

The 1,246-page document, which includes about 800 pages of annexes and footnotes, has been seen by the BBC.

Covid: Flights shut down as EU discusses UK virus threat

EU officials are discussing a joint response to a new, more infectious Covid-19 variant in the UK, which has sparked travel bans by many countries.
Canada and India joined European states in blocking flights from the UK while Europe-bound train services via the Channel Tunnel have been halted.
The new variant is said to be up to 70% more transmissible but there is no evidence that it is more deadly.
There is also no proof to suggest that it reacts differently to vaccines.

Coronavirus: Swiss count cost of surge in deaths

Infections have surged to more than 5,000 a day and total Covid deaths are approaching 7,000, averaging between 80 and 100 a day. The previous peak, reached in April, was 63.

Only this week a former Swiss president, Flavio Cotti, died reportedly of complications caused by the virus. Swiss leaders meet on Friday to consider whether to move to some form of partial lockdown.

Spanish police rescue 21 'exploited' migrant workers from warehouse

The dangers of illegal immigration in any country are very clear.
Spanish police say they have rescued 21 migrants who were being forced to work long hours in poor conditions at a second-hand clothing warehouse.

Video showed several people being freed from a secret room hidden behind heavy trolleys piled high with clothes.
Police said the business sourced and distributed clothing to African countries for sale. authorities said the migrants had been forced to work long days in poor conditions and were paid only two euros (£1.80; $2.40) per hour.

The two nations had threatened a veto over a clause that tied funding with adherence to the rule of law.

This could have cost them billions of euros in EU funding as they are being investigated for undermining the independence of courts and media.

But they were assured that the clause would only apply to future spending.

Brexit: UK-EU trade talks continue as 'sticking points' remain

BREXIT - BREAK IT OR??? Environment Secretary George Eustice said "sticking points" on fishing and business rules remained.

UK chief negotiator Lord Frost is taking part in discussions with EU counterpart Michel Barnier in Brussels.

EU sources told the BBC an agreement on fishing was close but a No 10 source said there had been "no breakthrough".

The UK government source told the BBC on Sunday evening: "Nothing new has been achieved on this today."

EU sources say the two sides are nearing an agreement on access to UK waters by EU fishing fleets.
