Salon de Mishell 🍸the drink. The perfect pairing for our FREE Virtual Concert✨Sunday Dec 20th 5pm CST - Kathryn Mishell and Family!

Created by Lenore Perry, follow her delicious beautiful drinks on Instagram @cheersiloveyou
With the theme of Kathryn Mishell & Family, the signature cocktail base spirit was a given, as single-malt Scotch drinking is a serious Mishell family tradition.

The performers in Germany are loosely represented by the use of Cynar which, while Italian, is a popular beverage in Germany when mixed with orange juice. Cynar is an aperitif of the amaro variety made from 13 herbs and plants, the most notable among them, artichoke leaves (!). Finally, sweet vermouth. This is a simple 3-ingredient cocktail, similar to the Boulevardier which itself is a variation on the Negroni.

1 oz. Scotch (we use a glorious 12-year-old single malt from Islay called Caol Ila, but it absolutely needn’t be so fancy)
.75 oz Cynar
1 oz Sweet Vermouth (we use Dolin)
2 dashes orange bitters
garnish of orange twist

Combine Scotch, Cynar, Vermouth and bitters in a mixing glass and fill to about half with ice. Stir until the outside of the glass is chilled, 30 seconds or so. Strain into a chilled rocks glass with one large ice cube or many smaller ice cubes. Express the orange over and around the glass and drop inside.

Please note that if you purchase a bottle of Cynar, you’ll find it to be a delightful addition to your liquor cabinet—one of the essential amaro to be sure. It’s wonderful as an aperitivo with soda on ice, or as digestivo with chocolate, as we enjoy it around the table after les dinners du Mishell. :) There are also lots of cocktails out there that use them, like the Eeyore’s Requeiem (one of my favorites), or use it as a substitute for Campari in a standard Boulevardier or even Negroni. And it’s great in a Black Manhattan. Explore! The world is your artichoke! :)

FREE ✨Virtual Concert - Sunday Dec 20th 5pm CST 🎻Kathryn Mishell and Family 🎶 Salon Concerts will bring chamber music into your own salons this year with our streamed concerts.

In this time when many of us are experiencing our families spatially separated during the holidays, @kathrynmishell is bringing her own family virtually from Germany as we share music with each other and with you, our Salon family.

This first program of our 31st season will start out with three short piano pieces Kathryn has just written as musical journal entries. Then we’ll go to Hannover to join her granddaughter and son playing the beautiful, romantic Fauré Elegy. Kathryn’s daughter-in-law @elisabeth_kufferath will play a brief piece for solo violin by the German composer Moritz Eggert composed in 2019. Stephen will continue our Beethoven 250th birthday-year celebration with his Sonata Op. 2 No. 3. Kathryn’s grandson will take us to the beautiful Marktkirche church to play the moving and fabulous Liszt Fantasia on its majestic organ.

We are sharing a signature cocktail created by @cheersiloveyou just for this event! We can each be listening and enjoying a beverage in our own salons. If you attend on the original streaming date, you are invited to join in a Zoom live chat with Kathryn, Leah and the artists. We miss you and look forward to seeing you virtually! ❤️

Salon Selection #4
Recorded live from Salon Concerts’ free Rush Hour Concert on November 25th, 2008, is the third movement of a piece entitled Reunion by our Artistic Director, Kathryn Mishell. Here is the story of the piece’s creation:

Paris 1863: Napoleon III commissions renowned luthier house Gand Frères (Grand Brothers) - known for fine instruments with a distinctive red varnish - to make a set of stringed instruments, perhaps to be shown at the Paris exhibition that year. Cut from the same piece of wood, the instruments carry the same serial number.

Austin 2008: violinist Brian Lewis and cellist Douglas Harvey, both based in Austin, realize they both own Gand instruments with that very serial number. Marveling that the instruments have made their way across many continents and years to land in Texas, they imagine the violin and cello longing to play together once more, as surely they did in 1863.

Invited to perform with Doug at the November 2008 Salon Concerts, Brain asked composer and Salon Concerts artistic director Kathryn Mishell to write a piece to finally bring these two special instruments together again. Titled Reunion, the piece received its world premier at the November 23 and 24 Salon Concerts.

The first movement, entitled Youth, begins with the sounds of child-like explorations of the open strings, then transforms into music of innocence and playfulness. In the second movement, Separation, the violin and cello each develop their individual personalities and explore the world separately. The last movement, Reunion, brings the two together, first tentatively, then joyfully finding each other again. Listen with a glass of wine and feel the stress disappear. Repeat as needed! As a nonprofit organization that is run completely by women, our board and staff are all women 💪 we are devastated at the news of Ruth Bader Ginsburg's passing. She was a pioneer, an unwavering advocate for women’s rights right up until her death. She paved the way for so many women to be able to walk into leadership positions, to have independence and agency in their lives. There is still so much work to be done. We are excited to announce an eight week advanced fall chamber seminar with the Thalea String Quartet starting on September 26th!  We hope this will be the perfect opportunity for advanced students who are looking for ensemble experience to connect and inspire a community.

Over eight sessions led by the Thalea String Quartet (who recently completed a two year residency at UT), participating students will learn how to efficiently prepare and learn a new piece, learn and put into practice score study and advanced listening, and will record themselves playing two wonderful pieces in the canon (alongside the Thalea Quartet, virtually).
