With the theme of Kathryn Mishell & Family, the signature cocktail base spirit was a given, as single-malt Scotch drinking is a serious Mishell family tradition.
The performers in Germany are loosely represented by the use of Cynar which, while Italian, is a popular beverage in Germany when mixed with orange juice. Cynar is an aperitif of the amaro variety made from 13 herbs and plants, the most notable among them, artichoke leaves (!). Finally, sweet vermouth. This is a simple 3-ingredient cocktail, similar to the Boulevardier which itself is a variation on the Negroni.
1 oz. Scotch (we use a glorious 12-year-old single malt from Islay called Caol Ila, but it absolutely needn’t be so fancy)
.75 oz Cynar
1 oz Sweet Vermouth (we use Dolin)
2 dashes orange bitters
garnish of orange twist
Combine Scotch, Cynar, Vermouth and bitters in a mixing glass and fill to about half with ice. Stir until the outside of the glass is chilled, 30 seconds or so. Strain into a chilled rocks glass with one large ice cube or many smaller ice cubes. Express the orange over and around the glass and drop inside.
Please note that if you purchase a bottle of Cynar, you’ll find it to be a delightful addition to your liquor cabinet—one of the essential amaro to be sure. It’s wonderful as an aperitivo with soda on ice, or as digestivo with chocolate, as we enjoy it around the table after les dinners du Mishell. :) There are also lots of cocktails out there that use them, like the Eeyore’s Requeiem (one of my favorites), or use it as a substitute for Campari in a standard Boulevardier or even Negroni. And it’s great in a Black Manhattan. Explore! The world is your artichoke! :)
