The COVID-19 pandemic forced our department to approach the way we work differently, but our Human Resources team was able to create positive experiences for our staff in a number of ways.

Below are just a few of their numerous accomplishments over the past 9+ months:

- Created a "Positivity Podcast" to help create a platform for employees to have discussions and share ideas in positive thinking
- Developed electronic timesheets for the entire Austin Convention Center Department
- Reviewed and navigated through more than 35,000 HR documents during our transition to a cloud-based system

Thank you, HR team, for making sure our team remains in good spirits and for continuing to be ultra productive while working remotely!

Has anybody seen our buddy at the Austin Trail of Lights?!

We wanted to take a moment to recognize one of the Austin Convention Center Department staff members that has gone above and beyond this year, so much so that she was named Meeting Professionals International - MPI's Volunteer of the Month for November!

Michele Gonzalez is a Senior Event Coordinator at the Austin Convention Center, but she also volunteers as the Director of Education for Meeting Professionals International's Texas Hill Country Chapter, requiring her to lead all of the organization's virtual education. Most recently, Michele successfully spearheaded the virtual Texas Education Conference (TEC).

Congratulations, Michele, and thanks for all you do for the Austin Convention Center and the community!

Despite our normal operations being derailed by COVID-19, our team has remained as productive as ever. To celebrate our department's accomplishments, we asked each of our divisions to share some of their accomplishments - and we thought we'd share!

We'll start with our Event Operations team, who purchased the following top-of-the-line sanitation equipment in order to keep our facilities safe:

• Stearns® ONE PACKS Mark E II Disinfectant/Deodorizer and multi-purpose, neutral pH, hospital grade quaternary. A one-step germicide, detergent, deodorizer, fungicide, virucide.

• Four Sentry 4 UV standalone disinfection machines. These units emit full spectrum UV light to eliminate up to 99.9% of the bacteria, fungi, and viruses in the space, and limit the growth of fungi.

• Handheld electrostatic sprayers. Victory Sprayers’ patented technology provides an electrical charge to solutions, allowing them to wrap conductive surfaces with an effective and even coverage. These machines reduce cross-contamination due to their touchless application.

Today, November 15, is America Recycles Day, and the City of Austin is focusing on what happens to Austin's plastic recyclables that are picked up curbside.

Did you know plastics that are recycled in Austin get turned into new things like bottles and containers, clothing, carpeting, flooring, flower pots, buckets, bicycle racks and auto parts?

Recycling is something we take very seriously at the Austin Convention Center. As a Gold LEED certified building, we divert 50 percent of generated waste from landfills through the building's comprehensive recycling, reuse, and composting program.

The Austin Convention Center has been activated as a COVID-19 negative, Hurricane Laura Evacuee Shelter. As part of the Capital Area Shelter Hub Plan and the City of Austin Homeland Security and Emergency Management, Halls 1 and 2 at the Austin Convention Center are being used as a shelter for displaced evacuees.

This does not affect the staging or availability of the Austin Convention Center as an Alternate Care Site. Located in Hall 4, the care site remains on standby as a hospital overflow facility.

Leadership, in coordination with the City of Austin Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management (HSEM), is actively preparing portions of the Austin Convention Center to serve as an alternate care site. This is to provide COVID-19 beds, care, and related medical treatment for patients to assist local hospitals and medical facilities.

The convention center and staff have served the community before during other emergency shelter activations in the past. As a proactive approach to be ready when activated, the center is being set up as an alternate care facility, currently for a 90-day activation period.

The Eating Apart Together (EAT) program is relocating to the Palmer Events Center. The Palmer Events Center is not being used as an alternate care facility, but is accessible for other events using current guidelines.

“We have been developing some outside spaces for the last few years to keep up with SXSW and their campus-style design program. It’s enabled us to look at some of these spaces in different ways to spread out events.”

“We are investing money in ultraviolet machines that will run through spaces and ionized sprayers... Fortunately, our convention center is unique in that we employ most of our staff versus outsourced. This allows for a high level of training, consistency, and preparedness.”
