As we move into June and the new season sets in, we want to take a second for one of our favorite recordings from Janis Joplin – her hit blues/jazz rendition of “Summertime.”

Joplin, a Port Arthur, TX native, was far from the first to record the song, but her cover has become iconic. George Gershwin composed it originally in 1935 for an opera titled “Porgy and Bess” and since then, more than 25,000 artists have recorded their own versions.

This Memorial Day, sit back and take a minute to appreciate those moments when the weather is warm and the livin’ is easy.

Here at the Texas Music Museum we’ve spent thousands of hours culling the archives of our state’s great musical history. We’ve researched, interviewed, photographed, and documented the musicians - some famous, some not - who’ve left their mark along the path of Texan sound and culture.

There is so much to learn when you visit the Texas Music Museum - but we’d like to share some of it with you here too. Let’s start by talking about one of Austin’s contemporary favorite sons: Gary Clark Jr.

Called “The Chosen One” by his fans, Gary Clark Jr. was born in Austin, TX in 1984. He began performing at age 12, and before long Clifford Antone had him playing live alongside legends at Antone’s historic music club.

Clark’s first major label release, 2012’s “Blak and Blu,” catapulted him to a new league. He shared the stage with guitar greats Eric Clapton, BB King, and Keith Richards. He’s performed on albums with Alicia Keys and the Foo Fighters. All the while, cementing his reputation as a musician with technical and creative prowess.

Known for his bluesy, distorted guitar playing and soulful vocals, Clark’s music infuses hip hop elements and old-school writing styles. His most recent release, 2015’s “The Story of Sonny Boy Slim,” gave fans an evolved take on the music style they already loved.

Gary Clark Jr. will be touring through the summer and headlining festivals along the way. Keep an eye out for his next announced Austin date!

Check out the video for Clark performing his single “Bright Lights” at the Crossroads Guitar Festival in the comment section below.

Hello all!
Since tomorrow is Valentine's Day, we are having our board meeting tonight. I am looking forward to more from my fellow board members to see what we have set for the coming months.

Don't forget you can come by the Musuem during the week and take self - guided tours of our exhibits.

In the "Spotlight on Tejano" gallery, you can read about legendary East Austin singer/songwriter, Johnny Degollado and his band members. Here is a photo of how the information is exhibited, aside from information in display cases.

Happy Valentine's and Friends Day!
