Re: Connecting, a new dance film exploring rhythmic connection across space and time will be live streamed June 3rd-5th at 7:30pm CST and June 5th-6th at 2:00pm CST.
Each of the company’s five resident dance artists present new solo works reflecting on their experiences in a disconnected, gray landscape and find connection in their shared language of rhythm tap. Woven together with a unique take on Acia Gray’s 2010 repertory work, Poinciana, these artists surpass barriers of asynchronous communication with brilliant connection through the souls of their feet.
Tune into Re: Connecting to enjoy this Spring performance of Tapestry’s 2020-2021 season.
All tickets are donation-based. To register for the performance, visit https://www.tapestry.org/reconnecting

Looking Forward/Looking Back - New Perspectives premieres next week as a six episode TAPFLIX series! Each episode will be livestreamed Sunday evenings at 7:30 P.M. CST beginning November 22 and ending January 3.

Looking Forward/Looking Back - New Perspectives is a tribute to Tapestry Dance Company’s history, legacy and future. Alumni dancers, including Nicholas Van Young (Associate Director of Dorrance Dance), Tasha Lawson (TriTone Productions – Calgary Alberta Canada), Jason Janas (acclaimed master teacher and choreographer worldwide), Jeremy Arnold (University of Texas Dance Faculty), Matthew Shields (Post Modern Jukebox and HyperFeet) and Siobhan Alexis (2008-2019), returned to the company as choreographers and created new works on Tapestry’s current company, dance artists from Australia, Colorado, Pennsylvania, Mexico and Texas. An exciting and thought-provoking tap dance series premieres works of some of the company’s brightest stars - the tap headliners who started their professional career with Tapestry!

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the original performance, scheduled to premiere March 26, 2020 at The Long Center/Rollins Theatre, has been reimagined for a virtual audience. Tapestry’s dance artists took to venues across the city of Austin for each choreographer’s work to be captured on film. The audience can expect to see brilliant dance works in new contexts, from new angles, and with new perspectives.

Tickets are donation-based and can be found at www.tapestry.org/looking-forward-looking-back.

Passing It Forward - The American Dream? (2016 premiere)
The Long Center/Rollins Theatre

Full Show Online (Free)

Tapestry Artistic Director Acia Gray wonders, how do we get to the Dream from here? Can we reach a place of respect for race, culture, gender identity, and equal rights with all of the recycled racial tension and prejudice around us? With the spoken-word wizardry of Zell Miller III and diverse music from jazz to hip-hop to American classics, Gray and her multiform Tapestry dancers and special guests move toward answers.

"Thank you to all of the artists who were in the creative/rehearsal process who are not represented in this debut. Lessons learned; listening now and taking action from mistakes made." #blacklivesmatter

Tapestry Dance

This 2016 Tapestry Dance Company documentary aired on PBS during the company's 2016-2017 Season - as well as the "multi-dance form" foundation of the company; its beginnings and its ongoing mission. This 2016-2017 season was filmed during the productions of "Passing it Forward - The American Dream?" (featuring guest artist Zell Miller III) as well as "In Your Shoes" and "Of Mice & Music - A Jazz Tap Nutcracker" – footage utilized for the greater message of this PBS/Arts in Context’s “Passing It Forward”.

In addition, the film shows the painful transition and loss of Tapestry's large, beautiful 5 studio home at the time to Austin's real estate market grab and transitioning Tapestry into subleasing one room thereafter in a local dance studio. A new home was found last summer at 2015 East Riverside; now empty due to COVID-19. The original space, unfortunately, is still sitting empty (gutted of all the beautiful floors/walls/mirrors etc.) and is sitting empty having been resold. It still has our sign on it.

Thank you to all of the dancers involved in the making of “Passing it Forward – The American Dream?” – a journey of learning and, in self-reflection, mistakes made in my ignorance of my own unconscious white systemic racism. * Recommended reading: “How to Be an AntiRacist” by Ibram X. Kendi and “White Fragility” by Robin DiAngelo. As well, as much Black history as you can find including “Stamped From The Beginning” by Ibram X. Kendi, “The New Jim Crow” by Michelle Alexander. If you’re a tap dancer: “Jazz Dance” by Marshall and Jean Stearns: as much footage as you can find of our great Black tap dancers; and conversations with Black artists.

Documentary features interviews with Acia Gray, Tapestry Co-Founder Deirdre Strand, Jeremy Arnold, Dre Torres, Yuka Kameda and Siobhan Alexis.

Thank you to all the past professional dancers and apprentices of Tapestry and our guest artists shown in archive footage and a special thanks to those artists within the 2016-2017 Season. My love and support is with you all forever; you have taught me valuable lessons I will never forget.

Open letter to our tap dance community

Sometimes we are trying to help but albeit ignorant in a desperate need of finding self-worth. Now is the time for transparency.

Cancelling The 2020 Soul to Sole Festival has been on my mind for days. Solidarity with #blacklivesmatter and with my past Black dancers and artists is important and crucial to me. There were things that I needed to address before moving forward.

I have had conversations with Black artists and Black dancers and they are enlightening: Big and bold steps need to be taken now.

I have made poor decisions in the past with an internal focus of “trying to be understood” as an artist and artistic director. These situations also called for support of my dancers in their time of need and understanding. I own that.

My heart goes out to those dancers who ever felt they were not being heard by me at any time during our 30 years as a dance organization. I apologize for any ignorance and any racial insensitivity that has caused damage in trying to reflect a history that I will never fully understand. My only lenses are through my own life and ongoing educational experiences as a white woman. I try to do my best, but my best has not always been good enough.

I stand in solidarity with Black artists and will continue to grow and learn and take action to support their lives and their voices personally, financially and artistically. I will stand at the helm of Tapestry Dance Company in a promise that it does the same as an organization now and into the future.

Our lives are music. The silence between the notes cannot be heard but it carves the music into place. It is there we will find the transparency of truth, but we need to listen. I need to listen.

I will make mistakes, but I will listen closely to help put me back in the pocket. That’s a promise.

That is a Tapestry Dance Company promise.

Tapestry Dance

As tap dancers, we only have the honor to dance today due to the struggles and sacrifices of our great Black tap dancers in history.

I ask that you take ACTION and support our incredible Black artists today in this struggle. Support ALL of our Black citizens NOW and into the future in all and any way you can.

This is a long and uphill battle; a battle against a deeply rooted system of white supremacy and privilege that must end - a truth that many do not and will not acknowledge.

The TRUTH will set the country free. LISTEN to it. EDUCATE yourself. SHARE this knowledge. SUPPORT Black owned businesses. VOTE.

One step at a time. Let us take big ones.
