JESSE MARTINEZ, Palmer Events Center, Public Event Crew

Living nearby the Palmer Events Center, Jesse Martinez answered the call to come in and assist during the winter storm. The number of individuals taking shelter at PEC continued to grow, therefore placing an increased demand on the job duties of the PEC staff. Over several days, Jesse stayed at the facility day and night, taking care of the needs of the shelter operation, sometimes only sleeping for two hours at a time before springing back into action.

Thank you, Jesse!

AURORA GOMEZ, Palmer Events Center, Public Event Crew

Originally scheduled to work 3 p.m. to midnight, Aurora Gomez remained on site when the Palmer Events Center opened as a warming center, after her scheduled shift was over, to clean and assist with shelter operations.

Aurora remained at the facility through Wednesday evening, continuing to monitor trash, restrooms, and spills while answering various calls and requests throughout her four-day stay until another team was able to take over.

"They were placed in a very tough situation but continued to do their jobs with a smile," said Taje Allen, Interim Facility Manager. "They were working on limited rest and food but still had a mind to deliver the best customer service possible.”

Thank you, Aurora!

ANTHONY JACKSON, Inventory Control Specialist

Since the start of the pandemic and through the winter storm, Anthony, also known as TeeJay, has worked every week with the logistical activity at the EOC, picking up and delivering supplies to the various COVID relief sites. The week before the winter storm, TeeJay went in on a Saturday to help set up the cold-weather shelter at Palmer Events Center. The week after the storm, TeeJay worked 10-hour days to help the EOC catch up on their logistical activity.

“Before the pandemic, TeeJay constantly demonstrated his dedication to his job. It is no surprise that he is demonstrating that same level of dedication through his work at the EOC,” said Sharon Patterson, ACCD Division Manager. “TeeJay is a very caring and honest person who wants to do what is right for his community and the City of Austin.”

RICK BURLESON, Palmer Events Center, Facility Maintenance

Rick Burleson, the PEC maintenance supervisor, was onsite daily to assist with the mounting issues related to the weather and to assist with the facility while serving the public as a warming shelter.

Rick handled all requests and accommodations for the visitors at PEC with impeccable timing, including a request to set up a shower trailer. With a plumbing contractor unable to make an on-site visit due to the weather, Rick and our Purchasing team secured a new plumbing contractor immediately, and they were able to clear the sewer lines by 11 p.m. the very same day.

JESSE PADILLA, Palmer Events Center, Facility Maintenance

Jesse Padilla responded immediately to work at the Palmer Events Center when the facility was designated as a warming center. Jesse started his checklist by making sure all the HVAC and lighting was set up for incoming guests and visitors seeking warmth.

As the guest count began to climb and the temperature continued to drop outside, the facility began experiencing some issues. Jesse was faced with multiple plumbing issues throughout the facility. Jesse was scheduled to work the morning shift at PEC, but ended up working 12-hour shift changes for the first three days of the winter storm.

Teddy Kim reached out to those in need of medical supplies, drinking water, candles, and more during the winter storm. With chains on his tires, Teddy was brave and willing enough to drive the treacherous roads to help out where he could.

“Teddy is a selfless, humble, and caring individual and we need more folks like him in the world,” said supervisor Julia Joseph, Austin Convention Center Department Finance Manager.

DANVILLE JACOBS, Palmer Events Center, Safety and Security

Danville Jacobs was one of a few Facility Security Representatives who were able to make it to the Palmer Events Center during the 2021 winter weather event. It became clear that we would be severely limited in the amount of personnel help to run the center, so it was imperative that we establish a 24-hour security presence at PEC.

Danville took on that task and worked tirelessly during the event and spent several nights downtown rather than traveling back and forth between work and home. During stressful shelter operations, security is of the utmost importance to ensure the safety of all persons. Thanks to employees like Danville, the shelter operations were successful and safe.
