1001 Nights Orchestra's Monthly Marakesh Sessions

1001 Nights Orchestra's Monthly Marakesh Sessions This is a page dedicated to the 1001 Nights Orchestra's regular monthly gig at Marakesh Cafe and Grill in Austin, Texas, the first Saturday of every month.
(1)

Due to our fans multiple queries, 1001 Nights Orchestra is now the house band at Marakesh Cafe & Grill! In the 2000s, the group performed often at Marakesh Cafe when it was located downtown on Congress Ave. We have fond memories of all those gigs. It is of great pleasure to return to provide live Middle Eastern music at Marrakesh the first Saturday of every month. Marakesh's new location also happens to be a few blocks from all our band members' homes. With plenty of parking (unlike its downtown location), Marakesh provides delicious Middle Eastern and Mediterranean food for all lovers of this cuisine. There is no admission, but, reservations are highly recommended. Please join us on the first Saturday of every month from 6 to 8 pm to enjoy great food and music from the Middle East & beyond in a casual atmosphere. The regular band members include: Kamran Hooshmand: oud, barbat, santur, cumbus, guitar, and perhaps other instruments Don Weeda: Accordion, Keyboards Ken Maranian: clarinet Anne Alexander: davul, darrabuka, riqq, dafs, and more Jay Whitely: tombak, daffs, other percussion We will surely have guests from the music community to join us from time to time. Hope to see you all out there for some fun!

Dear friends and fans of 1001 Nights Orchestra. We had been in residency at Marakesh Cafe for over a year now. We've had some great moments and memories there. But, we have to put a pause in this wonderful monthly gig due to personal reasons. We will keep this page open so our fans can see some of the photos and activities since we started this residency.

Meanwhile, please contact Marakesh and inquire about other bands that play there. Please support this great restaurant and live music venue. And thanks again for all your support in the past couple of years.

Dear friends, due to random set of circumstances, the 1001 Nights Orchestra will not be performing their regular monthly gig at Marakesh for the next three months. Please check with Marakesh Cafe & Grill to see the other bands they may have in our absence. Thanks and please go have a great meal at Marakesh and support this great venue!

Dear friends, the 1001 Nights Orchestra cannot perform on Oct. 3rd at our monthly residency at Marakesh Cafe & Grill. But, the world music group Ethnos will be filling in for us. Check them out and support live music! We will be back on November 7th!

Sama'i Bayyati - 1001 Nights Orchestra with special guests - Planet Music 2015

Happy Eid! Eid Mubarak! Another new piece and a free stream from our last live show at Planet Music. I learned this piece initially at the first UT Middle Eastern Ensemble directed by Prof. Anne Rasmussen in 1992. Later, we played it often with my trio and then with a larger 1001 Nights Orchestra. We even featured it as one of the themes (the bazaar scenes) in our live accompaniment to the 1924 silent classic the Thief of Bagdad. Enjoy!

Sama'i is an old musical form most common in the Arab world. It's based on a 10-beat cycle and its form consists of various "khana" or "houses" the first khana establishes the main mode or maqam of th
