Austin Caribbean Day Festival, is based on the lifestyles, traditions and norms of the Caribbean culture. The styles of music, be it Soca, Reggae or Reggaeton will be the experience of the day. The food will be of the island flavor, authentically prepared as if we were in the Caribbean. Even the selected games for the day would be lead be people of the diaspora to ensure that the experience would be as if you were in the Caribbean. Most importantly for people of the diaspora it is a matter of importance for the kids of the community be part of the social conditioning. So we expect that our community kids would be a play a significant role in this event.
We plan to select two traditional Caribbean dishes and will prepare these two dishes from scratch. We will select products that are akin to or closely similar to that of the islands, and will prepare these dishes as if we were on the islands. With selected individuals from the Caribbean descent that is known to have the skill set within the Caribbean Diaspora we will prep and cook these dishes, with the community participation. ACDF will offer hands-on cooking class covering the dishes select in the cooking styles of the islands. In our hands-on workshop, you are doing the cooking! Each recipe is demonstrated by our diaspora chef instructors. We break up into teams, and each prepares one dish from those selected .The kitchen/workshop is outdoors and we encourage you to view what the other station is doing. When the dishes are ready, the workshop participant would sit down to enjoy the meal.
